For anyone related to the Halsey family, this book is a must! Not only does it give names, and dates. It gives mini-bio's on some people. I always laugh when reading about the ancestor, a ship's captain, who was killed by his own crew. It's just funny how it is written. My copy is dog-eared, and eventually I will have to get another copy.

We have just added this 10th edition to the Genealogy Collection at our library, and I know it will be a patron favorite. The 9th edition was 386 pages; the new 10th is 880. There are chapters on the United States, each individual state, and 19 foreign countries. The maps included are clear, gorgeous and in color. The individual chapters contain excellent lists of sources including published material and repositories. Information is given on dates of county formation, parent counties, and record holdings. Both mailing addresses and URLS are given. The only drawback I found is that no listings are given for U.S. affiliates such as the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico and U.S. Territories like Guam. In the past, I have always steered patrons to ANCESTRY'S RED BOOK; now I will be referring them to the 10th edition of THE HANDYBOOK FOR GENEALOGISTS.

The Handybook for Genealogists is THE best-selling book in American genealogy. Since 1947 the first ten editions of this valuable research aid have been purchased by over a million people!

The new 11th edition integrates the winning formula of the previous editions with a number of important new features.

What's New in the 11th Edition

* Updated county-by-county data, including information about vital records, repositories, and jurisdictions.
* Updated descriptions of the major record collections available in each state, and addresses that help you go straight to the source.
* Updated Internet and mailing addresses for societies, archives, and libraries in all 50 states.
* Updated bibliography of books for each state
* A CD (for PC/Mac). The complete book is word searchable and maps can be downloaded and printed.
Standard Features

* Full-color maps of each state show ever county in the U.S. Map coordinates help you locate the county you're looking for.
* A tracker for every county shows how boundaries have changed over the years. Your ancestor may have lived in several different counties without ever moving. This feature will save you hours of research.
* Migration trail maps give detailed descriptions of the paths your ancestors traveled.
* Histories for each state help you understand how settlements, wars, territory, and statehood affected their creation.
* Maps, county histories, addresses of record repositories, website addresses, and lists of records are completely up to date.

The genius of The Handybook is its capacity to provide the researcher with at-a-glance genealogical guidance for every county in the U.S. At the heart of each state chapter is an alphabetically arranged table of counties keyed to a corresponding state map. For each county, the table furnishes a map index number, the date of the county's creation, the name of the parent county or territory from which it was created, and the address and phone number for the appropriate county court.

Everybody's favorite genealogical reference book, the new 11th edition of The Handybook is an essential addition to your reference shelf, whether you own a previous edition or not!

A Must For Researchers

As Continental forces and Virginia militia units were engaged in winning independence, American quartermasters and provisioners struggled to provide these units with all the necessities of life, from meals and guns to meat, fodder for horses, the horses themselves, firewood, and every other type of material. Much of this was requisitioned from the civilian population and certificates were issued payable in either continental or state funds, depending on the units supplied, upon presentation to court authorities. Thousands of these certificates issued to Virginians were duly entered by the courts, and they provide a fascinating insight into the period of the Revolution. These "Publick" Claims booklets contain interesting and useful information about the contributions of ordinary people to the Revolutionary War. They provide some details of people's service in the militia or as guards for prisoners of war; they indicate where some bodies of troops were at particular times; and they identify providers of horses, wagons, cattle, grain, or other supplies. Much of the information in these booklets cannot be found anywhere else, which makes the surviving records particularly valuable. Also remarkable is the fact that records survived from virtually every county in the state at that time with the exception of the newly formed Kentucky counties. This makes the collection even more valuable in covering areas which heretofore in this time period have suffered from a lack of personal data. The "Virginia Publick Claims" are published by counties. In addition to a faithful transcription by Janice Luck Abercrombie and the late Richard Slatten, a complete index is provided for each county booklet. This series is an extremely important genealogical tool for searchers in Revolutionary-era materials.

Harold the Herald is a very simple and basic book about the art of heraldry. While it barely touches on the complexities of this art, it is a good book for those who are totally clueless. It is a good introduction to children, and helpful to high school students who have English teachers who live in the Shakespearean era. I found it to be helpful in explaining the different elements of heraldry to my high school students.

Informative and Authoritative; a resource that will be appreciated for generations to come,

Before this book was written students of Hawaiian genealogy found it very difficult to secure information about the ancestors chiefs who shared in the history of the islands. One had to resort to files located in the archives of the State of Hawai'i, the archives of the Bishop Museum, the limited and scattered resources of the state's library system or to the sometimes suspect records of individual families who were more often than not reluctant to share their information. The prospect was not appealing because of the laborious efforts one had to make to gather the scattered materials into a coherent whole. The fact that most of the information was written in the Hawaiian language also presented formidable barriers to those who were not familiar with the language.

Aunty Edith Kawelohea McKinzie, with the helpful assistance of editor Ishmael W. Stagner, II, has done a very great service in providing this work, and its companion, Vol. 2, for the use and benefit of students of native Hawaiian history and genealogies. By gathering together and translating into English the information which was hitherto locked up in fragile copies of old newspapers, hard to decipher microfilm reels or the recollections, written and/or oral, of `kapuna' (respected elders) Aunty Edith has done yeoman work that will last through the decades as a vitally important resource for future genealogists and historians. An expert in the Hawaiian language and a `kumu hula' (expert hula teacher), she has by this work embellished a cultural and genealogical expertise and reputation that was already of the highest order in Hawai`i.

Hearts Turned to the Fathers

This book tells an amazing story about millions of people. Since 1894 the Geneological Society of Utah (now known as the Family History Department of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) has souhgt to collect genealogical information about people from every nation. Latter-day Saints see this work as a fulfillment of Malachi's prophecy that the hearts of the children would be turned to their fathers to unify all members of the human family and to prepare the world to meet God.

In Novenber 1994, the Church celebrated the Genealogical Society's centennial. At one level, the Society's story is the history of an organization. At another level, it is the intersection of numerous individual stories, such as the dedication of Susa Young Gates, the tireless determination of Joseph Fielding Smith, the enthusiasm of Archibald F. Bennett, and the daring of Paul Langheinrich. LDS genealogical research is known all over the world. Parts of the story are familiar to many people, but only a fraction of the whole history is widely known.

This book tells that story. It is a history of astounding and sustained efforts that have changed the hearts of millions.
