There are plenty of genealogy method books for novices out there, some quite good and some decidedly mediocre, but Dollarhide
proves once again that it's possible to present most of the how-to information necessary for getting started in only 48 pages,
and at a very modest price. Beginning with a basic pedigree chart and the question "What do you know?" he leads the reader
through a seven-step process of finding out the essentials of what you *don't* know, including family interviews, writing
for death certificates and following up the leads they contain, burrowing into the federal census and the Family History Library,
and then moving on to state and county records. At that point, the beginner should be well under weigh, with a lengthy list
of research goals to pursue. The second part of the book introduces the wider arena of the National Archives, Social Security
records, renting microfilms, and dealing with professional researchers. A state-by-state selected and annotated listing of
"resource centers" provides a good basic checklist, as does a list of recommended reference books. A handful of blank master
forms (on the Dollarhide model, naturally) are intended for photocopying. Surprisingly, though, except for a few Website addresses,
the author takes no notice at all of "computer genealogy" or the Internet, though the Net is the first point of contact for
many would-be genealogists these days. Still, this would be a good textbook for a Beginning Genealogy class.

A most thorough recounting of the German immigration movement to the United States from the early history of the country,
its effect on the country's development, the spread of German population within, and contributions of Germans to America.
This text was the principal text used by all major colleges and universities. Genealogists and historians would be most
interested in the accounts of contributions made by specific German individuals with generally little-known details, such
as the actual name of "Molly Pitcher" of the American Revolution and her German ancestry. Since it was long out-of-print,
I would assume possibly because of World War II, this is an invaluable resourse for all libraries in their genealogy, history,
German, or American sections.

The German Immigrants in American Church Records Volume 1: Indiana Protestant is very useful for family history researchers
looking for a German immigrant who may have married, had children, or died in Indiana. The 31,163 entry every name index
makes the book easy to use!
This book is just the first of the German Immigrants in the American Church Records series. Other volumes include Wisconsin and he has plans to publish volumes for Nebraska, and Iowa (see the project website at www.germanimmigrants.org).
I have found many of Roger Minert's family history research aides and resources to be very valuable in my German family history research. Roger Minert's team of students did a great job with this book and I hope they continue on through many more states!

Reviewing a book of passenger lists is rather useless. The *audience* for this type of data is limited. It's not a book
of general interest. That being said, as someone doing German ancestor research this book and the other books of passenger
lists serve a purpose. It's just much easier to start with one of these indexes to point you to which of the many, many rolls
of microfilmed passenger manifests contain the information you need.

It is commonly overlooked that the American Revolution witnessed one of the larger waves of German arrivals in the Americas
up to that time. Unlike earlier streams of immigrants, the nearly 30,000 Germans who arrived at America's shores between 1776
and 1783 were not farmers, craftsmen, or merchants; rather, they were mercenary soldiers dispatched to fight, for the most
part, in support of George III's goal of stemming the tide of the Revolution. (Civilian immigration to the Americas during
this period ceased owing to British control of the high seas.)
Despite their service to the British Crown, many German mercenaries opted to seek their fortunes in the new U.S. or Canada following American Independence. This phenomenon was of great interest to esteemed genealogist Clifford Neal Smith, who, during the 1970s and 1980s, researched the identities of 18th- and 19th-century German Americans whose whereabouts had been locked away in obscure German sources. This volume on German mercenaries combines three separate booklets in Clifford Neal Smith's German-American Genealogical Research Monograph Series. (For information on other reprints in this series, contact Clearfield Company.)
The contents of this consolidated volume concern mercenaries from the dutchies or principalities of Brunswick, Ansbach and Bayreuth, and Hessen-Hanau, based on sources in German archives. For example, Mr. Smith found the names of over 1,700 soldiers who failed to return to Brunswick in 1783 in an article by Hans Helmut Rimpau in the obscure periodical, Archiv fuer Sippenforschung. Similarly, Mr. Smith discovered the professional soldiers who left from Ansbach and Bayreuth in the equally rare doctoral dissertation by Dr. Erhard Staedtler entitled, Die Ansbach-Bayreuther Truppen in Amerikanischen Unabhaengigkeitskrieg, 1777-1783. The Brunswick forces, it should be noted, served mainly in Canada and northern New York, where they are likely to be found residing in 1790--unless they became prisoners of war. The Ansbach and Bayreuth contingents were attached directly to the British army commanded by generals Howe and Clinton, and together they served in nearly every operation of the war. Their counterparts from Hessen-Hanau fought in New York, were captured during the Saratoga campaign, and were force-marched to Charlottesville, Virginia.
While the contents of the component booklets in this volume vary from one another, in the majority of cases researchers can expect to find the mercenary's name, rank, age, birthplace, unit, and date and place of desertion. The volume identifies 7,000 German soldiers in all, the majority of whom chose to cast their lot with the New World.

This wonderful little book is the product of Dr. George Fenwick Jones's lifelong interest in German names. The beginning of
the book is a history of German names, including what happened to them in America. After that, the book goes into a lengthy
alphabetical list of surnames that points back to appropriate paragraph in the earlier chapters, explaining where it came
from.
Overall, I found this to be a very interesting resource. If you are interested in genealogy, or just want to know a little bit about your names, then this is a good book for you to get. I highly recommend it!
