This book was a reprive from all the thousand of books I have tried to get through over the past few years. It was easy to read and very informative. My interest in family history has been strengthened and I have read through this publication several times.

Japan has a rich tradition of graphically distinctive family crests emblematically symbolism high court nobility's family names during and after the 12th century. Hallmarked by contrasting motifs and simple geometries, the designs range from cherry blossoms, to well buckets, to floating clouds, to fans, and hundreds of other iconic images. "Family Crests Of Japan" features descriptions of more than 850 individual family crests along with their cultural backgrounds. Enhanced with informed and informative essays on the historical development of family crests and a selection of photographs demonstrating how crests were used on banners, signs, and buildings, "Family Crests Of Japan" is a unique, superbly presented, and enthusiastically recommended addition to academic library Japanese Culture & History reference collections, and the supplemental reading lists of professional designers and non-specialist general readers with an interest in Japanese culture, art, and history.

This book gives anyone who is frightened to start - or rather overwhelmed by the magnitude of the job - methods to begin in small ways that are non-threatening. First 2 or 3 chapters alone are worth the cost of the book.

The only book for descendants of John Phillebaum b. 1767

As a family history this book doesn't need a review. If it's your line you'll want it, and if it isn't you won't! Still, since my late mother was a Philabaum I feel compelled to write this.

This is a book covering the descendants of John Phillebaum born in 1767, probably in Pennsylvania. This book does not cover the more famous line of Conrad Philabaum, also of Pennsylvania, of which there may or may not be a link.

This is not quite a complete book, the author was in his 90's when this book was published and I don't think it's unkind to say he was rushing the manuscript for obvious reasons. There are some lines that could use a little extra work, yet.

Also, Vern introduced a new pedigree chart format. This may or may not be an improvement, but it is not innate for those who are used to the more typical charts. It did save space in the book, so it did serve a purpose.

There is a great appendix showing the author's correspondence, which does show a research outline for anyone who wants to go further. However, and this is a big however, there are no sources for the majority of the information on descendants, which extended to those living at the time of publication. Sources are included only for about the first two generations.

There are plenty of photographs and the will of John Phillebaum is abstracted within.

If you're a Philabaum no matter the spelling, I hope this was enough information for you to decide whether or not to investigate this book further.

A free-market fight against socialist tyranny

Brian Crozier asks a fascinating question. The covert 'war in the shadows' between freedom and slavery is generally presented as a clash between governments: during the Cold War, it was NATO and the West versus the Soviet Union and the Warsaw Pact; CIA versus KGB; MI6 versus GRU. But why? Why couldn't there also be a private-sector organization, a collection of free agents, doing what the Free World's governments couldn't or wouldn't do?

That forms the basis of this fascinating book, part history, part autobiography, about Crozier's efforts, and those of his allies, to undermine and destroy international socialism on a private-sector basis.

Crozier is a journalist and political scientist, but also an experience intelligence hand and long-time advisor to governments. Motivated in part by Western spy agencies' bureaucratic incompetence, their penetration by Soviet moles, and their governments' 'own goals' and shortsighted legislative restrictions, Crozier struck out on his own. This book is chock-full of stories of disinformation campaigns, subversive tricks, and spy-versus-spy maneuvers that rank, in my mind, with some of the best of Ludlum or Le Carré. Conservatives will also enjoy the eyewitness portraits of Reagan and Thatcher in action.

Very highly recommended to any student of espionage or the Cold War, or any fan of spy fiction.

Okay, the truth is I've loved family history (genealogy) for years, so I wasn't entirely clueless when I began this book. However, over the years I had bombarded myself with so much information that I found it difficult to do any actual research. This book was like coming out of my paper-strewn dungeon for a breath of clean air. Durrant makes the book a pleasure to read. His anecdotal chapter intro's and the scattered cartoons are upbeat, and his writing style is very "folksy." I enjoyed the easy-to-read typeface and all the white space left on the page. The layout is nicely done when you consider the amount of neatly organized information crammed into this book. The basics are here, plus the "where to go next" steps. I was enlightened by the articles "Who Owns the Cemetary?" and "Where Did My Ancestors Go To Church?" Although the author is obviously a Latter-day Saint (Mormon), his explanations of the LDS religious philosophy were brief and pertinent, not preachy. The nine appendixes are jammed with fabulous information and resources. Also included are blank forms that can be photocopied for use in your research and organization. A fun, informative, enlightening, EASY, book.

Researched, compiled and organized by experienced and expert military information researcher William Spencer, "Family History In The Wars: How Your Ancestors Served Their Country" is a very specialized guide for genealogists and non-specialist general readers wanting to discover how their family members in previous generations served within any of the branches of the military. In addition to the general Army, Navy, and Air Force archival resources, this highly portable pocket-sized instructional reference also includes women's auxiliary and nursing units, merchant seamen, prisoner-of-war files, civil defense, casualty lists, medals and gallantry awards. A superbly organized compendium of tips and techniques, "Family History In The Wars" is confidently recommended for inclusion into personal, professional, and academic library Genealogical Studies and Military Studies reference collections.
