I have not read this book, but I caution other shoppers that I believe this is the study guide to the main text and not a paperback edition of the original. I'm not sure about this, but the price matches those on other web sites for the paperback edition of the study guide (which bears the same name). Be careful.

I believe the other reviewer got confused about Amazon's listings.
Also, when buying from Marketplace 3rd party sellers here on Amazon, BUYER BEWARE. I am an Amazon Marketplace seller, and I see all the time other sellers listing older out-of-date textbook editions on the new edition listing page, Instructor books on the Student textbook listing page, workbooks on the textbook listings--probably in order to get their product on the better selling/higher priced Amazon page. PLEASE always read seller's description and also the feedback comments. If it isn't clearly stated what you are buying and the exact condition, ask the seller.
Another thing, these same reviews (including mine) will show up on all Amazon's listings for the different textbook and study guide editions of this book. Amazon needs to fix where reviews show up, so it won't confuse customers or mislead them.
By the way, I had the 5th edition textbook and Amazon's listing description for the book is correct.

In addition to the value as a record of the original pioneers of the 'New World", this book provides a surprising insight into the difficulties encountered by those hearty souls who left the comforts of England to persue the freedom that marks the bedrock of our society.

This collated and edited collection focusing on Oklahoma is part of the much larger (massive) collection of works produced by the WPA (Works Project Administration) which was part of Roosevelt's Federal Writers Project. Spanning the country to interview ex-enslaved African Americans before that entire generation died, the combined volumes speak volumes about the horrid conditions--provided by first-hand, eye-witnesses. This current volume focuses, as the title notes, on one such state--Oklahoma. For the complete works, the Library of Congress online is the best source.
Reviewer: Bob Kellemen, Ph.D., is the author of Beyond the Suffering: Embracing the Legacy of African American Soul Care and Spiritual Direction , Spiritual Friends, and Soul Physicians: A Theology of Soul Care and Spiritual Direction.

From 19337-39 the Works Project Administration, through the Oklahoma Federal Writers Project, interviewed former slaves living in Oklahoma. For various reasons the slave narratives were never published and languished in boxes in Oklahoma and Washington, DC.
In 1990 they came to the attention of the editors of this volume annd after extensive work were published in 1996. The book contains some one hundred thirty narratives and is a rich history of not only Oklahoma but other southern states as well as the slavery practices of the Five Civilized Tribes.
It is an indispensable resource for historians as well as readers interested in slavery, Oklahoma's Five Tribes, African Americans, and the history of race relations in Oklahoma and the Southwest. Detailed editorial notes and a superb index are included.

So many older members of families are writing their histories. This is a great present for them because it gives hints on how to organise the project and write the information in an interesting way. There are lots of practical examples on how to structure the chapters, choose titles and check out permissions. A great present for historic relatives, and a tactful way of suggesting how to write in a non-boring way so younger family might actually read the book.

Collecting material for family histories is one of the most popular hobbies in Australia today. Unfortunately, most people amass a mountain of material and then haven't a clue what to do next. Hazel Edwards' guide to writing a family history will teach you how to develop rounded characters and craft a readable story. It also offers heaps of advice on financing, distribution and publishing your family's history. Future generations will be indebted to Edwards for the rich, well written histories that will surely follow.

The 1850 Census Of Georgia Slave Owners compiled by Jack F. Cox is a straightforward genealogical reference listing an 1850 census compiled for each of the 93 counties of Georgia at the time. Alphabetized by the last name of each given slaveowner or overseer, The 1850 Census Of Georgia Slave Owners states nothing more than the owner's name, their county, and the number of slaves owned in each entry. A one-page introduction is the only other material in this no-frills primary source.

This is a great book! It's jam-packed with solid facts. I was interested in th Spohn (Spoon) family, and found 3 pages of info related to the first 5 generations, starting with Hendrick Spohn, a Palatine who came to New York about 1709. I also bought a 2 volume "compendium" which had less than one page on the same family. This book is more focused on fewer families.

If you have an illustration or text description of Scottish arms and no idea to whom they belong, this is an excellent place to start. Graphic features -- chevron, fess, greyhound, Maltese cross, mullet -- are arranged alphabetically, with 5,500+ separate contexts described and pertinent individuals noted. And there's a complete name and rank index.
