I have read and used this book in tracing my Scottish ancestors. There is a wealth of information in this book and it is a must read for anyone doing work on their Scottish family tree. I am working on my tree here in Canada and have been able to go back 200 years with the help of this book and the mormon library.

Frank Barry's A Trio Of Lies is the true-life memoir of an Italian family's struggle to adapt and survive in America. Deftly and candidly written with compelling emotion A Trio Of Lies spans most of the twentieth century and concludes with an eye toward the future. A Trio Of Lies is a highly recommended and intimately personal saga of human striving, weaknesses, and endurance that although specific to the D'Alessandro family, is universal in its relevance for all American families living in today's uncertain economic, social, and political climate.

I could not put this book down. I read it in three days. This knowledge is Just too powerful to be called a book. I call it A WEAPON OF MASS DESTRUCTION. It is a tactical weapon against the devil and against all forms of deception, blindness, weakness, psychological, mental, emotional and interlectual conflicts. I dare anyone to open this book and not read it at least twice.

Unfortunate Baby Names was the hit of my party. Some friends of mine are expecting a baby, and as we read through the names in this volume we had a room full of people laughing until it hurt. A little twisted: Woody Allen meets Robert Anton Wilson. Thankfully, it does carry a warning that the names are for theatrical use only.

This book offers so much to anyone who has any interest in family history from south Louisiana. As anyone can attest who has done any genealogy, many times family lines cross, especially in smaller towns. Though I was looking particularly for one line, I have found a wealth of information which I didn't quite expect. Mr. Oubre, I thank you sincerely for all the time and love it must have taken you to research all of these records.
A wonderful genealogical and historical reference!!

Mr. Oubre has included over 700 pages of family lines, census records, militia rolls, histories and legends of the people who settled and built the original town known as Vacherie, Louisiana. It is a monumental work that has added considerably to my passion to learn from whom and where I come. The book includes (among many others) histories of the Amedee, Becnel, Brazen, Falgoust, Folse, Gravois, Loup, Ockman, Oubre, Remondet, Sevin, Simon, Stein and Webre families of the German Coast area of Louisiana.

This is the best beginning "How To" on genealogy I have ever come across in 20 years. I checked out a copy from my local library, and after just a few pages had to stop reading, because I was wanting to make notes in the margins! I had to run to the bookstore for one! I sincerely hope and highly recommend the publishers print another edition. I am looking for several copies for friends and to donate to my Family History Center.
Excellent and fun overview of "how-to" for the novice.

Using examples from her own research, the author gives the steps she uses to pose and solve questions about her family history. The story of her family history quest, the illustrations, and the breadth of technics demonstrated entice the inquisitive novice to try to emulate her various searches. This is a short, fun, and easy book packed with "real-life" examples of the fun of the hunt and the joy of the successes she has had, making the reader want to find her own family history, too.

I read this book over 45 years ago while completing my undergraduate studies in Engineering. I have never forgotten it!! The significant substories within the book describe the development of wire rope; the construction of the first successful suspension bridge across the Niagara Gorge; the details of construction of the Brooklyn Bridge; and the comparison of the sway bracing of the Brooklyn Bridge and the Tacoma Narrows Bridge and its ultimate fate. These could all have been the subject of separate books and each was facinating in itself.
The fascinating story of the Brooklyn Bridge and its builder

This fascinating book descibes the the story of the brooklyn bridge in New York, and the story of their builders, the roebling brothers. Roebling had the great idea of building a bridge not with stiff beams, but with two big soft ropes made of fibers of strong and elastic steel. An idea, which now is used with nearly all Bridges of wide span. I love this book, because it is not an engineering report, but the touching story of the life of mainly the elder Roebling brother, who dedicated his health and his life to this bridge.
I could read this book nearly 40 years ago, and still it is one of my favorites. I do not posess it, and I deeply regret that it is not available any more. Hopefully AMAZON can find some and put them on their stock...

Willis Madden, son of Sarah Madden is given favorable mention in "Seasons of War, The Ordeal of a Confederate Community 1861-1865," by Daniel E. Sutherland. It focuses on the Culpeper County environs as both armies come and go - the great battles, the personalities of the civilian,s enlisted and officers, and the econimic and sociological impact on the locals.
Terrific book!

This is a great book - well written, with interesting and solid documentation, a "good read". Instead of another exploration of the tragedy of slavery, this is the story of a black family whose hard work prospered themselves instead of an owner, for many generations, and who wound up selling their land very profitably indeed. It's an encouraging success story, rich in detail and embodying the values of education and industriousness. The characters are memorable. It's several years now since I read it and it's still vivid in my mind. It rings true and is a very satisfying book.

For a moderate to advanced family researcher this book is a wonderful teaching tool. A basic understanding of British Civil Registration and census records would be helpful prior to reading this book. Its 21 chapters cover a diverse range of Welsh genealogical topics. In general the book strives to explain that Welsh family history research is possible and explains how to do it.
An indispensable, essential reference and guide.

Welsh Family History: A Guide To Research is a compilation of contributions by a wide range of authors. Some of the contributions are by genealogists with direct experience researching Welsh ancestry; others have been written by contributors with a detailed knowledge of the historical background to Wales. An understanding of this wider historical background is essential for serious genealogical research and in particular for the development of new strategies for such research. Now in a revised and expanded second edition, Welsh Family History continues to be accounted indispensable, essential reading for anyone seeking to conduct serious, systematic genealogical research with Welch documents and resources.

Now in a newly revised and expanded edition, Leonard Ashley's What's In A Name?: Everything You Wanted To Know continues to be a unique contribution and resource for aspiring genealogists and the non-specialist general reader with an interest for anyone who has ever wondered about the origin and meaning of their name. Ashley divides his informative presentation to sections devoted to Persons (forenames, surnames, nicknames, titles, name changes, aliases and pseudonyms, married names, etc.); Places (American placenames, Amerindian names, local, regional, and global placenames); Things (naming patterns, business names); Names, Language, And Literature (word play, name inflation, names into words, names in literature); Names And The Occult (names in magic, fortunetelling with names); What To Name The Baby (tips for giving a child a good name, the subjective factor in naming). Superbly written and presented, What's In A Name? will be read with enthusiasm from cover to cover, and would serve as an ideal text on onomastics and the nature of names.
