Finally something on County Limerick families and genealogy that is not bound in paper ! Lots of families here so don't expect a 12 page dissertation on any one family - but I really learned a lot and enjoyed browsing the pages here at the Irish Genealogical Foundation Library.

I felt so daunted by the idea of getting everything recorded and organized, but this book put the fun back into scrapbooking my family history. I love the idea of doing individual pages celebrating just an aspect of someone, or a small album that celebrates just one thing, and not having to put down their entire history if I don't have all the information. It also showed great ways to organize all the information I do have on a page. But perhaps the best tip I saw in the book was doing a page that asked questions about a photo and speculated what it might mean. Someone down the road might be able to answer that question, but not if no one ever asks it. The layouts are fresh and fun, and not at all cluttered.

The only book you need for heritage scrapbooking!

Okay, so I just bought this book from my local scrapbooking store yesterday and have not read it cover to cover or anything, but just browsing this book I have already been inspired to get moving on the daunting task of cropping my entire family history. It has checklists to get organized, advice on how to make it more fun and less hassle and lots of conversation starters on how to get some great information from your family. It has great layouts and idea suggestions for multiple photos and an index in the back with 75 sketches from Becky herself. The book itself is absolutely beautiful and very much a keepsake within itself. I look forward to some quiet time, so I can really sit down and get every detail out of this fabulous find. A must have for any heritage scrapbooking project!

Excellent source of Genealogical information on family surnames, helps you find the places that you should be looking for your family. Doesn't do your genealogy for you but most certainly helps.
Names are listed in Alphabetical order, no index necessary
There are 4 editions available but the 1988 corrected Edition is the best

Invaluable to the casual researcher of NF family history.

Seary's in-depth study of nearly three thousand family names of Newfoundland, arose from his work on the study of place names of the island. As his study progressed, Seary became fascinated with tracking families as they migrated along the coast or changed their names to avoid detection by Britain and France. His pursuit of the rise of Newfoundland surnames illustrates that relationships, place of origin, occupation, and even nicknames played very important roles.

The core of his research comes from the Official List of Electors 1955 chosen because it was the most comprehensive list of names and the communites to which they were linked before the massive resettlement programs of the 1960's. The sources of his information are vast as he quotes from scholarly works from England, Wales, Ireland, Scotland, France and the Channel Islands as well as the many censuses taken in Newfoundland since 1675 in his attempt to get at the origin of the name.

Family Names of the Island of Newfoundland attempts to trace each name to a geographical origin in England, France, Ireland, etc. as well as trace its linguistic origin. This will provide the reader of this text with answers to such questions as; What does the name mean? Where is the name found in Newfoundland? When was the first recorded incidence of it in a particular region? Of course, this information is invaluable to any researcher of family history.

The real value to the student of genealogy, is that as Seary lists the early instances of each name in various places in Newfoundland, he provides us with all kinds of tidbits of information about the person - how they were killed, where they worked, their father, etc. And as expected from a scholar such as Seary, all of this information is referenced back to an original source document!

This intriguing book of short stories from times past brings back memories and raises questions that go beyond logical explanation. Are there connections to relatives long gone from this earth? The writers style is like listening to the folks portrayed within the stories...humurous...curious...and down right hair raising at times... Ghosts, magic and sixth senses are woven into this literary journey through the back roads of the south. A wonderful collection of stories for anyone who has even the slightest interest in the past or abnormal occurances. Enjoyable for all ages. My twelve year old devoured the book in one reading...my 87 year old grandmother enjoyed reliving her past... A must read!

I enjoyed this book very much. Although it is written from the viewpoint of depth psychology, it is very readable and accessible (and brief). The sexual information may be surprising to those who have only received traditional bible training. Very relevant for those with a Christian heritage, whether they are practicing Christians or not.

The Importance of ReFraming One's Story

In,The Female Ancestors of Christ, Dr. Ulanov not only explores the Biblical stories of the lives of Tamar, Rehab, Ruth, Bethsheba, and Mary but she brings to life their importance in the 'making' of the Christ. She shows how each woman played her part in the heritage of the Christ and she reframes their marginal status in their respective societies and shows how this status made them the perfect vessels for the bloodline of Christ. Dr. Ulanov shows how taking what appears to be a negative characterlogical piece in one's life and looking at it through different eyes can turn that negative into a positive. Dr. Ulanov does not assume her reader is familiar with the First Testament as she recounts each story for the reader. She, however, recounts the stories in such a manner that it is easy to see what features of each woman she is going to weave into the character of the Christ. This is a moving and powerful book that I believe can assist anyone in reframing their own life story in a manner which will aid in wholeness and healing. It would be especially helpful to those in healing professions to read as it will give them a practical tool for helping them assist their clients in making new meaning out of their life stories.

This was actually a gift for my husband, who is enjoying the resource book. It has been one of his (young)life long goals to find his roots, which has been a struggle: especially with his Mexican roots.

Our wish is that the book will give us excellent leads as to where he can continue his search or where to begin.

Thank you from a very satisfied costomer.

Whether you are a beginner, intermediate, or advanced, this book will help you understand many aspects of Hispanic genealogy. Language, abbreviations, paleography, jurisdictional boundaries and its effects on record keeping, etc... this is THE book to get for researching ancestors in Mexico, Central and South America, and Southern Europe.

This is one of two books I recommend my classes to purchase. The other I recommend, if doing American Research, is THE SOURCE.

A Labor of Love and Beauty

Review Date: 2003-07-28
The New York Times recently ran a glowing front page story on this work, with almost a page more inside. Having received my copy, it is easy to see why. The book is beautifully produced. A sturdy orange and black hardcover protects 263 pages, each 16 inches long by 10 and a half inches high. This is a big book. The work was begun in 1964 by Harold Newman, an well-known and highly regarded attorney in Connecticut who died in 1993 at the age of 93. His son, Jon O. Newman, then took the book up and finished in it 2002. Jon Newman is one of the greatest jurists of our times, serving on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. His reputation for brilliance and attention to detail are legendary, and are well-reflected in this work. Given that Judge Newman's father hand-lettered the copious charts on large cardboard sheets, the statement in the Preface that "appropriately for a work of genealogy, this has been a father-son project" hits the mark.
But why would a busy, towering figure in law complete a genealogical chart on Greek mythological figures? One answer is that it was a great mitzvah for a son to complete a work his father spent almost 30 years on. A second answer is tradition; in circles of Jewish learning (a circle which certainly includes Judge Newman), there is a Hebrew saying "Lomdei Toratecha Lishmah," loosely translated as "the study of Torah for Torah's sake." One learns because it is one's obligation to. The subject of study may vary, but the obligation is always there. "A Genealogical Chart of Greek Mythology" is an exemplary work of Lomdei Toratecha Lishmah. Only a love of learning could lead to a work so thorough and beautifully presented. But there is a third reason, and one that should commend others to purchase the book. It is a really useful book, for serious and amateur students of Greek mythology, and for crossword puzzle fanatics, such as my wife. One need never miss a question about Greek mythology again.
In an age when books have become a corporate commodity, "A Genealogical Chart of Greek Mythology" reminds of what it was once like, when great scholars labored for love and we the public could soak in that both the love and the learning they poured into their books. It was a mitzvah for Judge Newman to complete the work and it is a mitzvah for the rest of us to buy it support future projects (and five stars for the University of North Carolina Press for undertaking and publishing it): besides, you'll have a great time with it.
