This book is packed with hands on activities and includes student and teacher background information - very useful stuff! I have used it with middle school kids and other people in my district have found it useful at the high school level. Covers full range of environmental concerns including global warming and energy issues.

A great activity book for studying environmental problems
Helpful Votes: 30 out of 32 total.
Review Date: 1999-01-17
The book is divided into the various environmental problems which exist in the United States, and has activities revolving around each problem. The book's basic assertion is that the rise in population is the real reason for all of the environmental problems that exist today, which is, in my opinion, is correct. As a result, I generally use the section on population first to bring home that concept, and then cover the other environmental problems. It is an excellent resource for teaching environmental science or the environmental part of Biology. The book emphasizes activities which show the student what they can do about each problem, and at least makes them aware of what is happening if there is nothing that they can directly do. This book could also be used by social science teachers covering the environment since it emphasizes using discussion groups to derive some of the answers about the various problems. The book, also, is easy to use since it has recommendations in the book how the teacher can execute each activity, and has a list of expected answers to questions you may assign as homework or classwork.

Contains lots of labs, many of which I had not seen before online or in other sources. Can be used in middle grades or high school. Every thing you need is there. Explanations for the teacher are more than sufficient. No guesswork. Is applicable to every science field - earth science, chemisty, biology, etc. A good buy.

The Essential Technical Rescue Field Operations Guide

Excellent Field Guide for Trained Personnel
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2002-07-17
Pendley's Guide is divided into separate sections on Rope Rescue, Confined Space Rescue, Swiftwater Rescue, Trench Rescue, Structural Collapse Rescue, and Helicopter Operations.

Each section is illustrated with line drawings that are amply annotated and easy to understand. This Guide is a reference I plan to use for training and on-scene incident size-up and execution of complex rescue operations. It measures 4"x7"x0.5", so it will fit in most of the pockets of my rescue jumpsuit. I've tested the paper; it's water-resistant but not water-proof. The pages are pretty sturdy, though, and should take a moderate beating in the field without ripping out of the spiral binding.

This is just what we need when we are confronted with a challenge that has a high risk factor and requires a by-the-book approach. Of course, it will be next to useless unless we practice using it, as a team, in varying evolutions on the practice field.

Not only is this field guide the most comprehensive of its type, but it also has the best illustrations of any rescue book on the market. The guide is clear and precise in it's scope and presents the subject matter in a manner that is easy to understand and retain. This is a "must have" for anyone involved in technical rescue or interested in becoming a technical rescuer. This is "cutting edge" stuff presented in a way that is understandable and approachable. National guidelines have been carefully researched and followed by the author. In the realm of rescue publications the bar of excellence has been raised several notches by this book!

Having this guide IS essential...

Lets face it, when you're talking about a technical rescue operation, there is a LOT to remember - and one small omission can quickly become a tragedy. I consider this book an essential part of my TRT equipment.

The book is thoughtfully laid out, so quick references can be made with ease. The illustrations are comprehensive and concise, but not over done. This makes them easy to read and understand, even under the pressure of a rescue situation or night operation. The straightforward layout makes it effortless to compare what you HAVE done, with how it SHOULD be done safely. I've found that significantly adds to my confidence before I "go over the edge". Safety is paramount in all aspects of this guide.

Even though there are differences in operational techniques regionally, the basics that are covered in the book will get you through your operation -- including rope rescue, swift water rescue, helicopter operations, trench rescue, etc.

I also own the previous edition. The author has kept the same basic formula, while fine tuning the content and improving the illustrations. I like the new look.

Make no mistake though, this is NOT an instructional text - it is a FIELD GUIDE for trained personnel, and a really good one at that.

The author's experience teaching this subject is obvious; he keeps things simple very readable. If you do this type of work - or aspire to, I highly recommend this book.

This is a good book. I've seen the new edition, which is really just a reprint, with no updating that I could notice -- the computer analysis applications could have used an update, as technology has advanced in the years since its original publication. If you liked the original, you'll like this one.

It's an excellent manual that should be read by anyone planning to go in the field.

I intended to use this book for a class starting in Feb 2004, and since the release date was supposedly late 03 or Jan 04, I felt confident in ordering it. No such luck. It never did arrive, and the distributor was quite unapologetic about not even being able to track where the books were or when they might get to the US (it's a British publishing house). They even told me that I should have known better than to plan on it being out when they said that it would!!

But that's not Gary Martin's fault, and I suppose it's a testament to how popular the book is. Too bad we did not get to use it.

An excellent text for an ethnobotany field methods course.

This book is one of the very few that is perfect for teaching a college level ethnobotany field methods class. It covers the how-tos of data collection, hypothesis testing, plant identification and collection for both general purposes and for phytochemical analysis. The book also includes sections on anthropological, ecological, economic, linguistic, conservation, and community development skills and knowledge necessary to going into the field to do ethnobotanical research.

Class curriculum can be easily organized around the information provided in Martin's book. The only drawback to this book is the fact that it sold out very quickly in its first edition and the first reprint, both in 1995, so at the moment its back ordered waiting on the next reprinting.

This book provides many insights into the entire process of conducting ethnographies and in-field oberservations whether the reader is experienced or not. Backed by case studies and experience, Ethnography for Marketers can be used as a check list, a manual, a sequencer and more. Dr. Mariampolski's insights and clear presentation of "How To" and "How Not To" make for an informative easy read. Additionally, many of the tactics are easily adaptable to any in-field qualitative research in almost any category with any class of trade.

This is a must read for any qualitative researcher.

Ethnography for Marketers

Review Date: 2006-06-14
Ethnography is "hot" right now. Understanding your customer and consumer is trendy. Mariampolski has been conducting and educating people about ethnography long before it was in vogue. This book is a must read for everyone who is even thinking about what the word means. Why? Dr. Mariampolski writes in a most engaging style which makes this "textbook" read easily and enjoyably. He knows what he is talking about since he is one of the most noteworthy marketing ethnographers in the world today. For those of us who are time crunched, reading the first couple of chapters creates enough knowledge that one is no longer asking, what is ethnography? Hy creates the context for truly understanding the goals and differences between ethnography and other qualitative approaches and where this approach has emerged in the world of consumer understanding. For those who want more of a step-by-step, that is part of the book and allows a researcher to have a sense about whether they or their agency are implementing ethnographic principles. Mariampolski's love of educating and engagement with the consumer make this a book for ANYONE who is saying the word - ethnography - a must read and a staple on shelf for researchers and marketers in all fields.

This man is state of the art - and this field of research is growing fast.

Review Date: 2006-01-11
Ethnography is about "living with the tribe" and understanding holistically the significance of what they say and do. In recent years since the mid-1990s, this school has grown increasingly attractive for marketers and researchers simply because classic phone surveys and focus groups have not fully explained consumer behaviour. Researchers want, and need, to go deeper.

Here, Hy Mariampolski - who is globally acclaimed in research circles as a challenging, articulate champion of qualitative research - literally writes the book on the art and science of "immersion" amongst the consumer tribes we study.

Thoughtful, practical and above all inspiring - this will help researchers confidently go where too few of us have gone before: into the everyday lives of those once-distant (phone interviews?) respondents. I unreservedly recommend it. This volume has proved an excellent guide for two of my projects already.

Great book!

While studying for my doctoral exams, the head of the Exceptional Student Education Department recommended (highly) that I read this book for my research-related question.

When I read that the book was written in 1960, I thought...."Oh my, this is going to be dated." It truly wasn't. Dr. Sidman does a great job explaining scientific resarch. This book is full of great examples and explanations. Even someone (such as myself) who has taken multiple statistics and research classes can benefit from this text.

I am going to purchase my own copy for my private collection.

Thorough and Readable Study of Plantation Development
Helpful Votes: 16 out of 17 total.
Review Date: 2000-03-26
Richard S. Dunn examines the British colonialization of the West Indies. Dunn considers numerous colonies, but Barbados takes early preeminence. Dunn discusses the adventurers of the first twenty years, mostly small-scale farmers; the cavalier-planters of the 1640s and '50s, Royalist exiles who fled the English Civil War; and the slaves who became a majority of the population in the period Dunn considers.

Dunn offers a detailed contrast between the lives of the planter elite and the enslaved majority. This is a landmark work in the history of plantation agriculture in the West Indies.

The work should also interest readers of Southern history. Dunn compares the rise of a cavalier elite in Barbados to the same development in Virginia. Planters from the West Indies, especially Barbados, dominated the early years of the colony of (South) Carolina.

Other works on this period of West Indian history are Richard Sheridan's Sugar and Slavery and Gary Puckrein's Little England. Works by Hilary Beckles examine the lives of women and Blacks in this period of West Indian history.

Dunn does an excellent job of explaining the planter class in the West Indies. His research is excellent and his writing style is clear and devoid of that crazy academic jargon so often found in history books. This is my first book on planters and it gave me a good fund of knowledge on the histories of Barbados, the Leeward Islands, and Jamaica, and it outlined in detail how the planters made or lost money. For me, it's Dunn's careful unraveling of the planters' financial arrangements and entanglements that made this book absolutely hard to put down!

the brutality of the West Indies slave trade
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 2003-01-01
In "Sugar and Slaves," Richard Dunn shows not only the brutality of the West Indies slave trade that revolved around sugar, but also how slave owners "created a society...radically different from the one they left at home." He notes that while these planters brought with them to the islands their laws, church and social institutions, these settlers early on "developed their own lifestyle...bent by their eager embrace of African slavery." (46) Dunn persuasively argues that European planters who came to the West Indies traveled literally and figuratively "beyond the line" of normal, British social conventions, and created a world in which "everything goes," particularly the exploitation of slaves and natives in the creation of a dominant master class. These rapacious men, he argues, quickly adapted to harsh climatic conditions by abandoning the use of lower class but white indentured servants in favor of exploitable, controllable Negroes once the sugar boom created a demand. "The rape's progress was fatally easy," Dunn notes: "from exploiting the English poor to abusing colonial bondservants to ensnaring kidnaps and convicts to enslaving black Africans." (73) Unlike his Chesapeake or Lowcountry counterpart, the West Indies sugar lord produced nothing but his staple crop, and relied instead on imports for all other necessities. "In short, the English sugar planter was more strictly a businessman than the senhor de engenho of Brazil." (65) This was a marked difference from other English settlement and colonization patterns, which Dunn concludes is evidence of the atypical class of planter the Caribbean islands fashioned.

This is excellent and one of those rare books that you can read again and again. Alexander Frater writes about a journey he made using modern air transport that retraces the original route of Imperial Airways (predecessor of today's British Airways) on their pioneering route from London to Brisbane, Australia in the 1930's. Not only is it an extremely interesting travelogue but it also is highly informative in a historical sense. There are also many funny and poignant moments that he relates from his journey. The only downside is that unfortunately it is currently out of print

Since May 1994, I have thoroughly enjoyed reading, researching, preaching and teaching from Biblical Text with my KJV Exegeses Ready Research Bible. I have also had the pleasure of buying copies of them for my fellow-ministers (i.e. those in other nations). They in turn, have reveled in the enunciated truths revealed by the emboldened words that bring clarity and exuberant Divine revelation. Absolultely a good Bible to aid in Messianic illumination. The only drawback I have encountered is that although this Bible has a great exegetical dictionary, it does not have a concordance. Therefore, I have purchased separate concordances to tuck inside my Bible case. Otherwise, I can not recommend this Bible too highly. One example of how is clarifies truth is with the understanding of just who the saints are -- the "mercied". Hallelujah!

(If you look at the NKJV and NIV preface on the change of YHWH to LORD, you'll see what I mean.) It will amplify and bring light to any confusion you once had. To anyone looking for a Bible, this is the one to get!

This project by Herb Jahn is very good and I recommend it, but only to people serious about the Bible. It is very wordy (with traditional renderings and the proper ones dispersed throughout), but can halp one get the flavor of a meaning of a certain passage. The Lexicon in back will be very handy.

You will also see many words in the original, especially names (e.g. "Yah Veh" instead of "the LORD", "Yah Shua" over "Jesus", "Petros" over "Peter")

If you truly want to know what the Bible in the originals taught, get it (but have a regular translation for church!).
