An excellent book packed with information. The content is clear and comprehensive. It has provided me with a good understanding of both HSDPA and HSUPA. The book serves as a very good reference for signalling procedures with the complete content of messages included. I highly recommend this one.

I've been to a few training courses presented by Chris Johnson. This book provides a good reflection of his knowledge and clear presentation style. I like the way that a lot of the descriptions are based upon following the flow of data through the protocol stack. There are some good examples of what happens to the speech and data service bits as they are passed between layers. I like the tables which illustrate how the number of bits change during each phase of physical layer processing. This is shown for DCH as well as HSDPA and HSUPA connections. Some parts of the radio network planning sections are similar to those found in other books but there are sections which do not appear elsewhere, e.g. analysis of maximum neighbour list lengths. Link budgets are also presented and described in depth.

Great for Signalling Procedures, HSDPA and HSUPA

This book includes a really good chapter on signalling procedures. Each of the procedures is described in a lot of detail. Signalling flows are shown, but also the content of each message is shown and discussed. All of the most important procedures are included - connection establishments and handovers. Good to have SMS transfer explained too. Also finding the chapters on HSDPA and HSUPA very useful. Explanations are clear and start from the basics but also go into detail. Provides a good explanation to how data is transfered and at what data rates.

Definitely worth reading

Well writen and well presented. Chapters on HSDPA and HSUPA are very good. Summary bullet points at the start of each chapter are a nice idea - good for revision when you're trying to remember everything. Also useful to have the relevant 3GPP specifications listed there. Chapter on logical, transport and physical channels includes plenty of detail. Signalling procedures chapter very comprehensive. Good to see link budgets described in detail. This book should be valuable to anyone working on or studying UMTS.

I found this book to be the perfect reference guide for basic English grammar, style, and writing skills. Its concise presentation and well organized approach to the rules of English grammar make this book a pleasure to use. The numerous written examples used in the book to illustrate the various grammatical and stylistic rules were very straightforward and clear, allowing readers to immediately incorporate these rules into their own writing. I recommend this handbook to anyone seeking to learn the important fundamentals or refresh their knowledge of English grammar and writing style.

The study of REA's Handbook of English has two major advantages. It facilitates mastery of writing and enables readers to study the grammar, style, and writing more efficiently. It concentrates on essentials: the rules of usage and principles of composition most commonly violated.

This handbook was developed to make the study of English grammar, style, and writing as current and effective as possible for all readers. A glossary of Grammatical Terms is provided as a reference to be used at anytime. Any reader will continue to find the exercises and explanations very helpful.

This book provides an excellent working knowledge and overall understanding of the figures of speech, sentence/paragraph construction, and punctuation. The only area in which the book fails to address sufficiently is spelling. On the other hand, the figures of speech and punctuation sections provide an individual with the tools needed to assimilate these often misunderstood and maligned topics. This book will likely appeal to individuals looking to gain a greater familiarity with the English language, most notably in the aforementioned areas.

I have owned this book for a couple of weeks. In that short time it has proven very useful to me.

The authors use an easy-to-follow writing style and don't get too bogged down in theoretical, statistical formulas. It is full of useful figures that illustrate the points being made. Note: although the authors rely on Stata for creating their printouts and figures, this is not a book on how to use Stata. You don't get the feeling that you have to learn Stata in order to follow along. I have found that most of the Stata diagrams are very similar to the diagrams created in SPSS, and probably SAS and R for that matter.

Although I am reading the book from beginning to end, I have already gleaned some useful information from advanced chapters, thus suggesting that it is a good reference book. For instance, I was frustrated by the lack of coverage on interpreting log transformed data (in multiple regression) in other stats books. I was pleased to discover that this book covers this issue in a clear and concise manner. I am also pleased that the authors have included a chapter on generalized linear models.

This is a very good book for people working in health care research. The authors talk to the reader and explain things in a lucid manner (I have read several stats books that do not do this, so it is a refreshing change). The authors also provide many practical examples to clarify the issues. A background in the basics of statistics is required.

Nice coverage of important topics for biostatisticians

Review Date: 2007-11-29
The authors say that they created this book to fit with a course they taught at UC San Francisco to medical students. The book is very sophisticated and a great reference source for practicing biostatisticians in industry or research. It surprises me a little that they find it effective for there non-technical audience. Although the topics are technical and many are advanced they do cover it in a conceptual way without heavy mathematics but still requiring some statistics classes as prerequisite.

Regression does not cover all the techniques of biostatistics but as the authors point out the four topics in the subtitle are among the most important. I know this from my many years of experience as a bisostatistician in the medical device and pharmaceutical industries. They use many good practical examples useing many of the common variables studies in many clinical trials where physical exams are given to record blood pressure and other vital signs and chemistry labs are done to determine cholesterol levels and other things that can be factors in various diseases. Also glucose levels are very important to monitor for diabetes trials.

In addition to the standard topics general estimating equations and generalized linear models are covered and where appropriate bootstrap confidence intervals. There is even a chapter on complex surveys a topic important when quality of life is an endpoint and survey instruments are used to measure it.

In the survival analysis chapter the Kaplan-Meier curves, log rank tests and Cox proportional hazards models are covered as expected but the authors go further to include extensions of the Cox model when the proportional hazards assumption fails. My only disappointment is that there is no coverage of actuarial life tables. At the medical device companies that I worked for it was common to get interval data on events rather than continuous data and then the Cutler-Ederer life table method is the analog for interval data to the Kaplan-Meier estimator for continuous data.

The book covers many topics but is concise as the authors claim. The authors provide a lot of examples that they work out using the statistical package Stata. The authors claim that Stata is the package of choice for biostatistics. This may be the case in academic settings but is certainly not the case in the pharmaceutical industry where SAS is used almost exclusively. I think that it would have been better to show how to write the computer code for solving these problems both in SAS and Stata. To the authors credit Stat is a very good package for their purpose and they do at times mention SAS and SPSS which are the other two major statistical packages used in industry.

All in all this is a very good book that is worth its list price. I will use it as a reference. it also contains a very nice bibliography of 9 pages.

John C. Cothran has compiled an impressive collection of over 1800 facts regarding African-American life and culture, spanning over the past 500 years. Broken into twelve categories consisting of art, literature, entertainment, and carrying over into science, military, and geography, it is an exhaustive historical representation of our ancestors and their achievements. It even has photographs and illustrations which makes the book even more important for studying and learning more about African-Americans.

While the concept of A SEARCH OF AFRICAN AMERICAN LIFE, ACHIEVEMENT, AND CULTURE may not be a unique one, the presentation of this book (set up in question/answer format) will be appreciated not only by educators and historians, but also by children of all ages. It can be used in trivia contests, and other fun activities, as well as a guide for history projects. What stands out for me with the book is the wealth of information and how Cothran went one step further and shared tidbits of information on famous African-Americans and happenings of their youth. I enjoyed A SEARCH OF AFRICAN AMERICAN LIFE, ACHIEVEMENT, AND CULTURE and would recommend every African-American family add this fascinating book to their collection of works by, for, and about our history and achievements.

John C. Cothran, author of A Search of African-American Life, Achievement and Culture, candidly states in the Introduction to his book, that as an African American growing up in the USA, he was unaware of significant accomplishments of African Americans.

The author indicated to me that he started his project about twenty years ago and the original idea was to create a game based on facts.
Not satisfied with this approach, he decided to write a book that would resemble the
question and answer format or the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) used by many companies on Internet sites.
It should be mentioned and as pointed out by the author, the use of the term "African American" in the book pertains to people of African descent from North America and South America.

Divided into ten chapters, the book touches a wide spectrum of subjects, as the contributions of African Americans in the fields of the Arts, Business, Education, Entertainment, Geography, History and Civil Rights, Literature, Military History, Science, Sports, Children, and Adolescence.
It certainly is, as the author states in the Preface, a small encyclopedia in a different format.

It was an eye opener to discover that the founder of the city of Chicago was Jean Baptiste Pointe Du Sable (c.1745-1818), who was an African American, and who spent his youth in Haiti.
Did you know that W.C. Handy was considered the "Father of the Blues?" He taught music at the Alabama A&M College in Normal Alabama in 1900. He left because the college emphasized music he considered inferior. Two of his compositions were "Memphis Blues" and "St. Louis Blues."
Whose name means "Ethiopian" In Greek, and was known for his fables and children's stories? I will leave that one for you to find out from the book.

In the world of Science we are informed that it was an African American slave in 1721 who described how he was inoculated against smallpox using an African method of inoculation. Cotton Mather began to use this procedure in America, and it was used to protect soldiers of the Revolutionary War-later adopted by the British.
When you sharpen your pencil, remember it was J.L. Love who on Nov. 23, 1807 patented the pencil sharpener.
If you love potato chips, the next time you put one in your mouth, remember it was Hryam S. Thomas in 1868, who developed it.

These are just a sampling of the hundreds of facts and findings that are highly informative, precise, well researched, and ideal for sharing with children and adults alike.
All of which are enlivened with black and white photos, and coherently presented in a simple accessible style, illustrating the outstanding and little known contributions of African Americans.

Frankenfoods -- it's worse than you think
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-06-04
This book seems at first glance to be primarily about genetically modified organisms (GMO), but is actually a frightening history of the power elite's largely successful attempt to gain control over food and food production. In the last 50 years food has gone from being an agricultural product grown by small farmers, to being a national security concern, to now being a weaponized commodity under the control of a few corporate owners.

Mr. Engdahl lays out his case in a methodical, scholarly, yet riveting manner, much as he did in A Century Of War: Anglo-American Oil Politics and the New World Order. He begins with the GMO Revolution launched by a few powerful corporations, aided and abetted by a cooperative USA government. He then explores the birth of "agribusiness" and the oxymoronic Green Revolution. He monitors the revolving door between corporate advocates of GMO and government officials charged with policing food safety. The Rockefeller brothers' roles in these machinations are painstakingly revealed.

The eugenics movement -- very popular in early to mid-20th century USA until the Nazis lowered its public acceptance -- is shown to be alive and well under the new guises of genetics and molecular biology. I was more surprised by this than anything else in the book, but Mr. Engdahl proves this point beyond dispute. Along these lines, the only part of the book that I felt needed more explanation was the role of Darwinism, actually neo-Darwinism, in molecular biology. One could almost be left with the impression that a belief in evolution has led to the abuses of molecular biology in genetic manipulation. Once Mr. Engdahl got that far into the discussion, I wish that he had made a brief mention of the symbiogenesis interpretation of evolution now challenging the neo-Darwinists, e.g., in the books by Lynn Margulis. (Acquiring Genomes: The Theory of the Origins of the Species is one good example.) I'm not a scientist, but I would tend to think that a subscriber to the symbiogenesis interpretation would be less likely to want to create Frankenfoods.

What motivates the Genetic Manipulators, huge profits and control over the world's food production? As usual with the power elite, it's not just about the money, it's about power and control, but with a particular goal in mind. That goal is an elitist Utopia; a modern world much as it is, only with a whole lot fewer people, especially poor dark-skinned people who live in resource rich places like Africa, South America and parts of Asia. Complete control over food production is one of the primary means to this end, ethno-specific diseases being another. I had read this assertion before, but regarded it as the rantings of right-wing loonies until I read this book.

Mr. Engdahl is a regular contributor to on-line journals on the topic of geopolitics.

William Engdahl's new book, like his 'Century of War' book of a few years ago gives the layman like myself an understand of complex subjects that is rare with authors dealing with complex subjects. This is such a readable book. It is a great investigation into one of the most important issues of our times: The attempts by a few powerful groups to control the world's food supply. This book made me angry and worried for the future of our food supply and our future as a free (sort of) people. How dare our government leaders allow this !
Every person who cares about where their food comes from, truth in labeling, nutrition, health and affordable access to food supplies NEEDS to know this information. Is there a more important issue? What is more important than water, air and food ? The political agenda of food control, so well explained in this book, is more than a little chilling.

Seeds of Destruction should be read widely and it's information talked about by everyone. As a mother trying to feed my family healthy, nutritious meals everyday, this information is invaluable. Thank you Mr. Engdahl for this well written book! Maybe I'll read it to my children at night so they'll grow up knowing who the boogie men are!

Engdahl lays bare the partnership between government, the major foundations and the agribusiness industry in their eternal quest for global domination with extensive citations, tying it all together well. The Rockefellers do not shine with this exposure. This book is a sobering analysis of the situation we are facing with respect to destruction of the globe's biodiversity and the indigenous and cultural knowledge of how to feed ourselves, all for the sake of a scheme to lock in profits by a handful of corporations and a government that works on their behalf. If you're already down about what's going on, this book is not for you. If you can handle the reality of the situation, definitely read it. This threat is greater than any threat of nuclear destruction by far. Whatever your feelings on overpopulation, the schemes he lays out, developed by the Rockefeller foundation, are truly disturbing. Especially so are the contraceptive corn and incorporation of hCG into a tetanus vaccine(resulting in sterility) given out in enormous numbers to women of childbearing age in Mexico, Phillipines and Nicaragua. This book will make you want to collect seeds on everything you bring into your kitchen from now on, to say nothing of making you not want to eat anything of which you do not know the provenance.

This is my first Amazon.com book review and it is this book, Seeds of Destruction, that finally moved me to write such a review.

I have purchased literally thousands of dollars worth of books from Amazon.com alone and I find this book, Seeds of Destruction, is THE most important book I have come across.

I haven't read the entire book yet, but from what I have read so far (especially the chapter on Argentina), this is one of THE most important and timely books of the past 100 years and this new century.

There are only a few books that are worth their weight in gold and this book by F. William Engdahl is one of them. This work will be remembered as a "signature service" to humanity (a term used in the intelligence world to denote exceptional work).

What a priceless work of research and documentation (some 17 years of hard research) into the heart of absolute Evil that is masquerading behind this GMO movement--the veritable cancer that is metastasizing upon the Earth body--and that has been behind the so-called eugenics movement since 1913. But this book is much more than GMO. It is about the people behind the GMO and eugenics movement and why they are doing what they are doing.

If you really care about your children, your family, and the survival of the human race and of planet earth, then you must first buy and read this book, and then buy 10 more copies as I did and give them to all your friends and family members.

Tell them that this book might save their lives.

I have said this many times, "Knowledge is only a seed, only illumined action produces fruits!' This book is that vital seed without which we are looking toward to some really dire eventualities.

Great book. Highly recommended for students of education and of psychology. Chapters range from academic treatises offering the most cutting-edge research (Bandura, Zimmerman, Schunk chapters) to practical and reader-friendly essays sure to be of interest to teachers and parents (Pajares, Caprara chapters). As other reviewers have noted, the Guide for Constructing Self-Efficacy Scales should be of great interest to researchers, particularly doctoral students interested in conducting studies of self-efficacy.

As a researcher in the area of academic motivation, and a psychologist who works with adolescents on a regular basis, I found this book very helpful. Chapters are lucid and grounded in the most current research. The editors have put together a volume that is helpful not only to clinicians and researchers, but for anyone interested in the beliefs of adolescents!

This is an outstanding new book that explores what is today the hottest concept in education, particularly in the area of motivation:
self-efficacy. Part of the social cognitive theory of Albert Bandura, America's greatest living psychologist, self-efficacy refers to people's beliefs in their own capabilities. In this book, editors Frank Pajares and Tim Urdan bring together practically every prominent voice currently studying self-efficacy. The focus on adolescents is especially worthwhile, as none of the existing books on this topic has focused on this important age group. Bandura himself authors two chapters, one that places self-efficacy during adolescence in perspective and another that offers the Guide for Constructing Self-Efficacy Scales. Other chapters are penned by prominent researchers such as Barry Zimmerman, Dale Schunk, Anita Woolfolk (who writes on the self-efficacy beliefs of teachers), Robert Lent and Nancy Betz (whose focus is how self-efficacy beliefs play out when adolescents begin to select careers), and Ralf Schwarzer (on self-efficacy, adolescent risk-taking, and health). There are also chapters geared for those interested in how self-efficacy beliefs influence adolescents in areas such as special education, culture, the family, and sports. Perhaps the most practical chapter is provided by Pajares, who offers teachers and parents valuable insights about how self-efficacy beliefs can be nurtured and developed. This is a rewarding read and a much needed book.

This is an outstanding volume that focuses on self-efficacy beliefs during adolescence, a time when these self-beliefs are critically important. Chapter authors consist of a who's who in self-efficacy theory. These include three of the giants, Barry Zimmerman, Dale Schunk, and Robert Lent, as well as great researchers such as Nancy Betz, Mimi Bong, Gian Vittorio Caprara, Deb Feltz, Ralf Schwarzer, and Anita Woolfolk. Especially impressive, Albert Bandura, the Father of Social Cognitive Theory and of self-efficacy (as he is accurately described in the foreword), writes the opening chapter. Frank Pajares' closing chapter should be must reading for all parents and teachers of children and of adolescents. It's also worth mentioning that the Guide for Constructing Self-Efficacy Scales is included in this volume (exciting news, given that it has never before been published). All in all, a much welcomed book for everyone interested in the motivation and achievement of children and
adolescents.

The best book for writing lab reports in college.

Every time I have to do a lab report, I use this book. No exceptions. Although I cannot comment on the other aspects of the book in (check out the "Look Inside!" Table of Contents), its guidance for writing lab reports is helpful to the utmost. Before this book, I made in the high 80s on my lab reports; now it is rare that I go below a 95. The book is full of what to do and, more importantly, what not to do. For example, never give purpose to evolution (I am paraphrasing, of course). Birds did not evolve flight to escape predators or to travel long distance; they evolved flight because a series of random DNA mutations turned forelimbs into wings, and that increased their survival rate. That is just one of numerous examples, and, best of all, all of the examples given are extremely relevant to college students because the material comes from college-level lab reports. Still, all of my biology professors have this book, in one edition or anther, on their shelves. This review refers to the 5th edition.

The only writing manual you'll ever need

I've used this book since I was a freshman biology major. I'm now a Ph.D. student and I still reference this book. I've read other writing manuals designed for students in the sciences, but I've found that nothing is as clear and useful to students in the life sciences as this book.

Absolutely Essential

Every biology undergraduate should read this book. I wish I'd known about it when I was an undergraduate; it contains most of the information I had to learn the hard way.

An essential for all students.

As a university professor teaching budding biologists, I've found this book to be excellent. As the other reviewer said, I wished I had this book when I was a student. I, too, had to learn things the long and hard way. Pechinik has done a great service to science students. Let's hope we see more good writing out of this next generation of young scientists.

I am a School Psychologist and I use this program with Middle School students. The lessons are age-appropriate and easy to implement. The teacher checklist in the back is also very helpful in planning which lessons to use. I also use, and love, the early childhood and elementary skillstreaming programs.

I came across this book while working with a group of middle school students who were lacking social skills. This book provides step by step social skills information directed at the specific deficiencies. I am looking forward to continuing to work with the information I have gathered from reading this book.

Good if aggression in adolesents is your area

This book is primarily directed at teachers and professionals trying to manage and socially 'skill' aggressive and delinquent adolescents. The book consists of short exercises sandwiched between buffers of explanatory material. The exercises are fairly much standard prosocial activities involving discussions and role-plays. As an overview, or outline, of what to do, these are good. However, the instructional sequences are short, and occassionally vague. My overall reaction to the book is that it needs a companion manual to realise its usefulness. There is also a deal of repetition of points that may or may not be useful depending on the audience. The amount of explanatory text is high for a book that is not theoretically laden down, and this weakened its appeal to me. In my own opinion, it is hard to beat (pardon the pun) for detail Teaching Social Skills from the Boystown Press for this youth segment.

I was introduced to this book by the co-ordinator of out patient services as a book that she thought highly of in working with adolescents. A chronically mentally ill client from my program was seeing her outpatient for counseling and she thought the book may work well in assisting the client with social skills. On an individual basis it worked very well with the client. We decided to start a group within our program to see how it would work with other chronically mentally ill clients and it has worked extremely well.

A super book for working with socially challenged youth. High risk kids often get into trouble because they don't possess appropriate social skills, and they are not motivated to practice positive skills. They simply don't see the value. All to often their innappropriate skills have been rewarded in life. This book prepares teachers and adolescent group leaders to develop missing social skills in a step by step well thought out and research proven manner. The book also prepares the leader with great stratagies for recognizing and dealing with trainee/client resistance. Of course in your group you will not experience this. If you really want results and not just feel good discussions with kids this material is state of the art. Highly recommended!
