This book is one of the greatest! (Along with the second one in the series) If you've ever seen the PBSkids show, (I watch it every day!), you'll love these books! They help you understand the shows a lot better.
In this book, it contains the first three episodes of the series.
Ok, heres the summary part. Its kinda weird, because on the site they say James is 14 and Sarah is 15, on here they say they are BOTH 15. Oh well, I prefer them both being 15.Ok, here it goes:
15 year old Sarah Phillips is a green-eyed redheaded tall pretty daughter of a Major for the King. Meaning she is loyal to the crown. But her father left England to scout new lands in the Ohio Territorys. (...).

Intolerable Acts-In this episode, the four are staying at Phillis Wheatleys home, hiding from the British redcoats. But the Quartering Act is passed, and soldiers are staying at Ms. Wheatleys home! Sarah is confused at how Phillis is somebodys property, its an outrage! James and Henri find a way to get the word out that the Intolerable Acts were passed, but not without putting them all in grave danger. A danger that only SARAH could free them from, but she has to choose. Lie to a commanding officer in the King's Navy and save her friends, or rat them out and have them all sent to jail? (...)

The third episode thingy, I forgot the title-Sarah and Henri head for Boston to deliver supplies and meet up with Abigail Adams. James stays in Philadelphia to report on the continental congress thingy. But to him, theres an EVEN BIGGER story going on! After the three witnessed a merchant sailor get tarred and feathered after doing nothing wrong, James thinks of it as a patriotic and humorous act, one that he wants to report on. Will he learn his lesson? And will Sarah and Henri get the supplies to their destination safely?

Fun way to learn!

Wow! A book that is fun for kids to read and educational. My 10 year old son really liked this book. It has sparked his interest in the history of our country. I will definately be buying more in this series.

It was a really good book. I could read it 10000000 times and still not predict the next page. It was so much fun to read, and it shows that human nature hasn't changed at all since then. I'm a big fan of the show and I loved reading and watching it!

This is a great read-aloud chapter book for those kids ready to hear more than they can read. The text flows smooothly so reading it aloud is easy. No he said, she said text commonly found in easier chapter books.

My son loves the series on TV but we don't always get to see it and a lot of the story line is missed so this is helping to fill in the gaps. And while I agree, it is 21st century characters, it still does bring history to life especially for the younger grades. I think the grade level of 5-8 is high. I think that age group would be bored with this. Although the writing is at that level which is making it enjoyable for me to read.

I highly recommend it as a read aloud with grades K-3. It is a great introduction to the American Revolution filled with enough action and suspense to keep my 5yr asking for one more chapter please???

In his compelling new history of "Juvenile Justice in the Making", David S. Tanenhaus has accomplished what many scholars considered all but impossible: a fresh historical interpretation of the development, operation, and enduring importance of the juvenile court. Scholars, lawyers, child welfare workers (or children's advocates), and policy pundits will wrestle with the significance and perhaps even more with the lessons of Tanenhaus' bold new opening. (author Harvey J. Graff)

"Juvenile Justice in the Making" captures the timeless lessons of the early juvenile court and applies them intelligently and passionately to the complex challenges it faces today. Tanenhaus carefully reconstructs the early history of this resilient institution to remind us how a separate court for children evolved through swirling social contexts and political cultures to give a recurring institutional voice to our enduring notions about children and the law."--

From the Publisher: "In this time of despair over the very possibility of achieving juvenile justice, David Tanenhaus makes a compelling case for understanding the present by looking backward. "Juvenile Justice in the Making" reminds us of the persistent power of the belief that the young deserve a separate system designed expressly for them. And he insightfully explains why we must understand that the American juvenile justice system did not emerge full born, but evolved over time out of determined attempts to realize its critical mission. By giving juvenile justice back its past, Tanenhaus pens a persuasive argument for rethinking its present and reimagining its future." --Michael Grossberg, Professor of History & Law, Indiana University

From the Publisher: "Juvenile Justice in the Making" is a must read for anyone concerned with children. David Tanenhaus suggests that our view of childhood has changed quite radically in recent years. With the storytelling skills of an historian and the clearheadedness of a law scholar, Tanenhaus takes us back to the founding of the juvenile court to illustrate how far we've strayed from our faith in childhood as a separate province from adulthood."--Alex Kotlowitz, author, "There Are No Children Here"

I swear... Clamp has really done it this time. I have read this book over and over and over but I never tire of it. It is so funny. And it is really what happens when a serious, good student suddenly is put on a super hero fighting team to protect a school where all they do is party with a complete absolute doofus. Their enemies are almost funnier. They want to dominate the earth and they summon some really weird creatures. But none the less the series is funny and so is the whole cast of characters. But saddly the story plunges into a melodrama. But hey all I can say about this series is "HA! HA! HA! HA! HA! HA! HA! HA! HA!" I highly recommend it.

This series is SO funny! I mean, Kentaro wants to marry Takeshi, and they always end up with Takeshi chasing Kentaro. And Eri, how she always whacks them with her mallet. And, in the second book, there's a play, and the Kentaro and Takeshi are cast as Duklyon, the real Man with 20 Faces is cast as himself, and the evil people crash it. I love this series SO much! I wish it was longer, though. Two books isn't enough!

This is a great addition to the clamp world. Cool story, with romantic entanglements, evil villains(kind of), truth, justice, and superhero parodies. And as always great drawings. Even though this series is only 2 volumes long it has a great setup. There are lots of cameos from other series. (If you liked Clamp school detectives or the man with 20 faces get this).

Great Book for Story Time

Review Date: 2001-11-17
I just read four of the 30 folk tales (all very short) contained in this book to my son's fourth grade class. It took about 30 minutes to both read all four stories and discuss their hidden meanings. For many of the children, this was the first time they had heard a folk tale, and all the kids were most intrigued by each story's characters and how justice was accomplished therein. Many of the stories' only characters are animals. I believe this book is better read to children rather than read by children. It is a superb story telling book. I recommend this as a "must book" for parents and teachers.

Unique perspective on classic tales to tell

Review Date: 2000-10-19
This collection of world folktales has a completely unique perspective from any other story collection. Author Sharon Creeden is also a trial attorney, and she has used her knowledge of law to augment the stories she has chosen. Each chapter considers a different aspect of law and includes traditional tales that reflect this theme. She follows up each story with stories from the law books that are connected to that story in some way.

As a middle school teacher, I especially like the stories in the section on juvenile justice, particularly "A Robber I Will Be," about an unruly boy who THINKS he gets his wish when he is allowed to join a band of thieves. The stories themselves are very tellable, and I can imagine any number of applications of these tales in settings or subjects that one does not usually think of when the word "storytelling" is spoken.

Law and human nature combined in an entertaing way
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 1998-06-03
Every day we are exposed to news of court cases- what Creeden illustrates in an entertaining informative manner, is that there is nothing new under the sun. Before Ted Bundy there was Bluebeard. Before a woman sued Mcdonalds for hot coffee burns- there were bakers who tried to sue customers for simply smelling bread. Also King Solomon had to decide the fate of a baby long before Baby M made the news. The stories in this book are well written, good for telling (I have done so at a middle school) and great lessons to learn. Parents and teachers can make use of this book to let story (not moralizing) teach the next generation.

Although parts of this book made me cry, I was moved by the author's story of how he overcame the past to create a new life. It is inspiring to read about good people who have achieved much and how they got to where they are. If only we could all set high goals, accomplish each, and then look for ways to give back, our lives might also be as inspirational as this book. I recommend AN IMPROBABLE LIFE to everyone, even if they haven't been in prison.

If you know someone who has a child who is getting into trouble or -- even worse -- has landed in jail, they must read this book. It is easy for a teenager to give up on themselves after they have done something really bad. This book shows that kids should never give up on themselves. The author went from the depths of depression to a story book life by sticking to a single idea. Everyone is responsible for their actions, including changing their life from "travelling a hopeless road" to a superhighway filled with hope. There were many pages that made me stop and wipe my eyes. I hope this book makes the NY Times best seller list.

An Emotional Roller Coaster Ride
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2007-10-22
This little book takes you on an emotional roller coaster ride. The author relates the story of his youth that was marred by a broken home. With a remarkable writing style that wastes few words, the author begins with his father's times that span the 20th century including the development of science and technology early in the century, the Great Depression, World War II, the Eisenhower years and the turbulent 60s. Sprinkled with anecdotes from Major League Baseball, Wilcox seems to always focus on underdogs and overachievers like the 1960 World Champion Pirates and Don Larson with his World Series perfect game in 1956. The author's life as a young man and the way he overcame adversity shows just how powerful ideas are and how far persistence, dedication and will power can take a person.

Liberty, Justice, and F'rall is a fun historical novel about the dog heroes of the Republic of Texas. Liberty is the soft-spoken golden retriever/narrator owned by Sam Houston; Justice is a handsome, black labrador who faithfully attends Jim Bowie; and F'rall is their mutt of a pup. Liberty gives a dog's eye view of life with Sam Houston, from the time she was given to Sam by President Andrew Jackson, through the war with Mexico. I read parts of this book aloud to third, fourth, and fifth graders during their library storytime. My Texas accent finally came in handy! The waiting list for this book is longer than the number of weeks left in school, so I will be buying two additional copies. It's a fun, energetic look at the war for Texas independence, which, by the way, took only 18 minutes to vanquish Santa Anna's army.

If you want your children to get into history this is a good start.

The author is familiar with all the aspects of the fall of the Alamo and puts the story from the view of the dogs (named Liberty, Justice and Furall) that were owned by the main characters of the hitorical incident.

The characters are easy and fun to follow for every adult that may read this wonderful and heartwarming story to their children. There is no political overtone, only a pivital hitorical event told from a different aspect.

This book has been chosen by the Daughter's of the Texas Revolution to be sold AT the Alamo book shop!

This book is by far one of the most innovative and insightful books that I have read in some time. They also challenge the more common images that gangs represent as well. I found myself questioning the basic reasons for there are gangs in America, and found myself finding a whole new perspectie as these people view their dscieion to be in a gang as an economic choice of survival, not that of one they get into because they have a choice.

I recommend this book STRONGLY for all students of Criminal Justice.

I found this to be one of the most informative books about understanding the gang concept in America. Howerver, it also helped me to debunk the same myths about gang and agang structure as well. This book made me look at gangs as an alternative economic choice for those involved in the gangs and the difficult choices that many of them face that those on the outside of the gang life will never have to make.

I would rate this book on a list of must reads for anyone interested in a study of criminal justice.

Good articulation of gang research into a well-written text.

Shelden and colleagues do an excellent job in analyzing the literature, from Thrasher to present, on gangs and the culture surrounding them. They critically examine statistical data and use several sociological theories in an attempt to better understand this growing societal phenomena. The original research from the Detroit area interviews is compelling. Certainly a book that would aid anyone's understanding of gangs, gang culture, or even graffiti (they use photographs to help explain this). Scholars looking for a book as a supplemental text in Delinquency or like courses would find this book a great asset!
