I've completely changed my backup procedures as a result of reading one chapter. And I'm more confident of my internet security and data integrety.
Excellent book!
Microsoft Security - well done.Review Date: 2002-12-27
Having worked with 2000 for over a year and XP for over 6 months, I am finding new things out everyday. I was pleasantly surprised to see that these authors have gone to great lengths to make the understanding of the security systems in 2000 and XP may not be a complex as they seem.
The book is very well documented, in fact the entire book is in PDF format making it a portable reference. What you'll find in the 800 pages is what to do from securing the internet to restricting access to setting user rights and permissions.
The authors have even gone as far as putting in numerous step by step exercises fro you to work with. Another thing that makes this book standout is the fact that is can be used for both the 70-214 and the Security+ exams.
Finally the section on wireless security is one that I am re-reading, while the concepts are understandable, I have to go over the section to fully understand it. The book also has a cd included and as stated before the e-book is include as well as a number of various add-ins and utilities.
I think the overall value comes from the fact that the book covers a wide range of security related information, 2 operating systems, and 2 versions of the XP operating system and is detailed and well documented.

23 Hours of Video TutorialsReview Date: 2002-12-13
Training Video on TargetReview Date: 2002-11-30
The level of detail is almost always on target. Each new section begins with a broader perspective and then narrows down to repeatable lessons that bring home the concepts. Howard almost always starts with a blank project so every detail is covered; there are no mysteries left over.
I think this is the most effective video training I have ever seen.

First, a brief description about my professional background:
I have 15 years of COBOL programming experience on different mainframe platforms.
I have been working with Fujitsu Consulting for 5+ years.
I have taken numerous courses in VB, Java, UML, Web Development using VB, and lately several .NET events, presentations or conferences.
My next project is not going to use mainframe but Microsoft .NET, particularly ASP .NET and VB.NET.
Now about your CD's:
These were the best educational CD's I have ever taken.
Because of my knowledge of Microsoft .NET and VB, and my long experience with COBOL, your CD's were easy to follow. I noticed that NetCOBOL has a lot of similarities with VB, which made it easier to understand OO NetCOBOL.. It helped me very much to understand .NET and VB features which were not quite clear to me until now.
Your CD's are very much like a live classroom setting, and even better because you can repeat parts if you want to see or hear again. Windows Media Audio/Video Player was probably the best technology to use for these lessons. It made them dynamic and not boring. Other educational CD's, like Computer Based Training CD's, are without voice and motion and thus were too static and boring. Your CD's are very detailed and thoroughly done, showing each detail, each step, and each cursor movement.
I especially liked the fact that Howard was creating most of the projects from scratch. On other CD's projects or programs are already created and you don't see start to finish how to do it. They usually just show some parts or creating small parts from already created entity.
I also enjoyed trying to create same projects on my own in my Visual Studio .NET environment. I had small challenging problems, because of some differences between my installed production version of NetCOBOL and the one that Howard was using. But I was able to resolve them quickly and it just added value to my learning process.
I am very excited about the possibility to work in the near future on some projects using NetCOBOL.
But I am also a little cautious and ready to expect more challenges when using it in the real world. The real world COBOL programs and mainframe environments can be much more complicated than the examples presented.
Again, congratulations for excellent CD's.

This is a REFERENCE MANUAL. It tells THE FACTS !Review Date: 2001-08-06
If you want to learn WHAT A FUNCTION IS, this reference will tell you.
If you want to know what Families of Functions EXIST in Excel, this reference organizes the functions into families ( Database, Date/Time, DDE & External, Engineering, Financial, Information, Logical, Lookup/Reference, Match & Trig, Statistical and Text Functions), and then lists and describes the details of every one of them.
If you ALREADY KNOW WHAT that you need to use an Excel function, this reference will tell you HOW to use it.
This is the dictionary of Excel Functions which are the heart of Excel. This is one of those rare books ( like a dictionary ) that is not diminished by the lack of an index.
The table of contents lets you find everything.

A Very Nice ApproachReview Date: 2004-09-09
In evaluating books on Office, I always look first to see if they discuss Pivot Tables in the section on Excel. A surprising number of books don't, or give them very short treatment. In this book the index sends you to page 263, that puts you right in the middle of a discussion on pivot tables. Flipping back a page or three gets you to a section called Find Relationships Between Data. What an excellent idea, that's what a pivot table really is, but doesn't have the problem of the dumb name Pivot Table. The discussion is as good as I've seen anywhere in explaining what you can use them for.
The next thing I found was inside the front cover where they have a "Contents at a Glance." This sends you to, not the page number - that's the function of the index, but to a section identified by its own numbering system. Really a handy way to get where you want to jump in to solve the problem you're having at the moment.

"MSGroove" SpringboardReview Date: 2008-06-17
What is it?
A Tool Box for Project Managers or Information Managers
How does it do it??
Groove is set up with 10 to 15 tools that will assist in the process of infomation transfer. Each tool is explained to the "T", about not only how, but when & where the tool should be used.
Features glore.
The tools in MSGroove provide methods to track your meeting schedules, Meeteing Decisions, Meeting Notes and share the Project folders (Files), pictures, track issues, Alerts, project calendars, Integration of InfoPath forms, instant messages and the list goes on and on.
One important aspect is that the engineers realized you may need to use a specific tool over and over. Example is the calendar tool. You can create numerous calendars, for example, one calendar for each of your sub-contarctors, entering all the dates of expected work or information, then you can combine all the calendars into one complete calendar or combine any number of calendars together, somewhat like an overlay system adding one at a time to see if problems exist. Very Cool.
One small problem is that the sketch pad for doing your drawings needs to have an eraser for sketch errors
Groove can be a very powerful tool for any project PM or information manager. Combining this Program with "MS PROJECT" on the larger project side, provides complete project shareware anywhere.
Finally a ((secured workspace)) to share important information with your partners & Employees in business. Not only can you share information, you can also allocate responsibilities and see the follow up, through the use of the Alert system. This program works on a server or on any stand alone PC to PC. If your looking for better ways to control project information, this is your baby and Rick, John & Berry will take you through the information Step by Step.
My hat is off to the engineers of MS Groove.

Well, now you can quickly and easily make your self an expert or just a very competant user; thanks to this book. I have used Groove for a while and found some of the concepts a bit difficult to grasp. Groove is different and having an expert guide like this has helped me to open up a whole new world of possibilities and opportunites to use the tool to it's full extent.
If you have Groove (or are thinking aboout it) this is a MUST have!

I would highly recommend this book to any person using Office 2003 in a business environment. Gini Courter and Annette Marquis had anticipated my questions and not only provided highly informative answers but extremely useful tips and advice. Additionally, the examples will assist readers from an entry level to expert.
My bookshelf is crammed with reference guides for application software. Recently I have purchased a number of titles written by Courter and Marquis as I find their writing style so easy to read and interpret. Once again I have not been disappointed with this title.
