This is one of my 19-month-old's favorites. The pages are not text heavy, but the rhymes are still lilting and have a fun use of language. Each page has a variety of flaps to lift, tabs to pull, feathers or fur to touch, etc. Very enjoyable!

My son's favourite!

My almost one year old son loves most books but this is definitely his favourite. We read it to him most mornings and he gets so excited when we pick it up. The flaps to lift, the fluffy chicks etc. make it fun and interactive. It's a beautiful book.

More Than Just an Exam Cram
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2006-09-26
Although this book is centered on the preparation for the reader to take one of the CCNA examinations, it is more than that. In reality this book is an excellent introduction into the whole concept behind routing as conducted 'a la Cisco.' It covers routing in general and then gives an excellent introduction into the Cisco products that handle routing. Since Cisco is the largest provider of routing equipment this book serves as a source of information as to just which Cisco products are best suited for your particular application.

Beyond simple routing, which is complex enough, in today's world security is always a problem. This book goes into some considerable details in the descriptions of security aspects, including a full chapter on Access Control Lists to limit who has access to what data.

Of course the book is basically oriented to passing the test, and if that is your goal here is the information you need, including sample questions and more. The CD included with the book has more material, including interactive media explaining some 25 activities visually demonstrating key topics and a Flash-based simulation and visualization learning tool.

For those who love Anne Rice, P.S. McDonald has created a compelling story mixing elements of the supernatural with sharp observations on human nature. Ms. McDonald's beautiful, young protagonist, Charlotte (Charley) Alden, is pitted against the seductive power of Marowe Marrennt who is not what he appears to be. She is drawn into an obsessive love that threatens to destroy her. Set in New York, the story takes place in Charley's elegant brownstone and in Marowe's Gothic mansion somewhere on the west side of Manhattan. Marowe's mansion provides a meeting place for members of the strange race of Roanes who crave his rare wines. This is a page turner that you just can't put down. This is an excellent vacation read.

This book is spectacular. I was in love with the main male character, Marowe the minute I started reading about him. All of the characters in this book are well thought out and I felt as if I knew each one of them personally. I found myself actually getting worried that something bad would happen to one of them, all I wanted was for Charley to be ok and for her to see the light. This book made me think of so many aspects of everyday life that go by unnoticed. Everything is not always what is seems. This book is excellently written and you will not be the same after reading it!!!

I thoroughly enjoyed the Seduction of Charley by P.S. McDonald. The story was original, the writting was witty without being overly verbose and the characters were interesting. The author obviously knows Manhattan intimately as many of the locations were recogniziable. Her descriptions of the mansion interiors are done in great detail, one can almost feel the dampness of the wine cellar. I look forward to the next work from Ms. McDonald.

The story of Steven McDonald and his family is simultaneous heartbreaking and exhilarating. His capacity for forgiveness stretches the boundaries of human imagination and puts many of us to shame.

In the book, the McDonalds discuss their friendship with actress Maureen O'Hara who states that her dream is to one day march with Officer McDonald the entire length of New York City's St. Patrick's Day Parade. Let's hope and pray its not too long before modern medicine works the miracle that will make her dream a reality.

This book inspired me so much that after reading it I resolved never to be ungrateful again and live life with a sense of value for it. The faith of Mr Steven and his wife is amazing. They are indeed remarkable people. The book is written in a very simple manner and touches the heart because of the truthfulness in it. I hope God keeps giving these two people strength to keep going on. This book has made me realize how lucky I am to have so much.

Gorgeous long lyrics of surprise

Review Date: 2004-01-18
Fraser's book is a tight rope act: on one side lies the easily sentimentalized; on the other, the cold unflinching truth of his brother, born with spina bifida. His poems, by being at once repelling in their candor and compelling in their humility, take enormous risks. From the beginning lines of the first poem, "Ars Poetica," Fraser calls into question any artistic posturing: "All poetry begins," he declares boldly, "with my brother's legs." What follows is an imaginative return to the womb where his brother is transported to "the light of his becoming" when he was merely a "run-on sentence of flesh, / until the dark germ rode, dormant fate for steed, along / [his] spine, flung the false logic of his DNA, dragged / him down." Such a mixed bag of metaphors is typical of Fraser's more lyrical moments. Fraser, however, gets away with yoking the odd metaphors together, the sheer intensity of the moment able to override any quibbles we might have with the apparent incongruousness of the poetic machinery. And if the aesthetic gravitas of a loaded word such as "light" appears part of a familiar landscape, Fraser refocuses the lens a handful of lines later: "Making light is easy. Watch: / half-wit, numbskull, saphead, lamebrain, nincompoop, dope." Fraser's is the voice of someone speaking from the far end of the lived and of the living. He speaks not with well-intentioned sympathy but with a terrorizing tedium able to anticipate most any taunt aimed at his brother. And as poetry itself offers no consolation, Fraser also bids "farewell to verse that rollicks by light's name."

A stunning debut.

_Strange Pieta_ is a tour de force of craft, lyricism, and imaginative reach. The poems addressed to Fraser's brother Jonathan, born with spina bifida, will certainly interest readers involved in disability studies, but the appeal of this book is broader than any particular subject or person. The poems are wise, angry, tender, unforgiving of human cruelty but richly generous in their understanding of frailty and their desire for connection. The precision of Fraser's language, his daring leaps of wit and image, and the profundity of his insights into love, desire, and loss--all combine for a stunningly beautiful first collection.

Strange Pieta provides emotion and critical insight.

A breathtaking journey. For the theorist, Strange Pieta enriches the discourse in disability theory. For the common reader, Fraser provides a heartfelt and emotional look into his brother's life, a life that has always been deeply intertwined with his own. Emotion and wit never ceases to flow from Strange Pieta's pages.

A tale of island justice
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 12 total.
Review Date: 2007-08-14
As a Swedish teenager spending the summer with an Italian-American family on the island of Nantucket, I was appalled by the mandatory sentence of life imprisonment without parole immediately imposed by a judge when a jury after less than five hours' deliberation returned a verdict of guilty of first-degree murder with extreme cruelty. In Sweden, where the rates of alcoholism and suicide are relatively high, the prison term for someone convicted of premeditated murder motivated by overwhelming passion is ten to fourteen years, and the emphasis is on rehabilitation rather than punishment. I agree with Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens that prison terms in the United States are far too long. I recently read Frank W. Abagnale's Catch Me If You Can, and I was struck by the disparity between the prison terms to which he was sentenced in Sweden (six months) and in the U.S. (several years). In recounting the trial of Mr. Toolan, Michael Wells Glueck (who published his account on the same day as the verdict and sentence were rendered) appropriately quotes Shakespeare's Macbeth:

MACBETH:
Canst thou not minister to a mind diseased,
Pluck from the memory a rooted sorrow,
Raze out the written troubles of the brain
And with some sweet oblivious antidote
Cleanse the stuff'd bosom of that perilous stuff
Which weighs upon the heart?

Doctor:
Therein the patient
Must minister to himself.

A gripping courtroom drama faithfully depicted

The fascinating murder trial of Thomas E. Toolan III was a dramatic contest between the findings of learned, Harvard-educated psychologists, psychiatrists, and criminologists and mountains of testimony by both expert and ordinary witnesses, between theories of diminished responsibility and common sense. The latter prevailed. If you weren't in attendance, reading this work is tantamount to having been there. The day-by-day repartee, intended and accidental humor, pathos, and grim reality are faithfully portrayed by a professional writer and author.

For the background of this case, the reader is referred to Brian McDonald's book, Safe Harbor: A Murder In Nantucket, published in both hardcover and paperback by St. Martin's Press. The focus of this work is on the fourteen-day trial that concluded on June 21, 2007 with a verdict reached after comparatively brief deliberation.
The author of this account has written two additional published works, Living Among The Swiss and What I Learned At University, as well as a monograph entitled The Retirement Home Experience describing his parents' care and treatment at such institutions. He is a former Woodrow Wilson Fellow, instructor at Columbia University, the City University Of New York, and state universities in Colorado, Wisconsin, and Massachusetts, as well as a retired investment analyst. Great Grammar Guide for Everyone

Review Date: 2001-03-30
This a great guide for all journalists or anyone who wants to use proper grammar and punctuation. This textbook is owned by every student in the journalism school where the two authors teach, which is where I first picked up this book. I've been working in PR for the last four years and have it sitting on my desk for reference whenever I want to know the proper use of underway vs. under way or bad vs. badly or some other frequently misused words and punctuation.

A great, clear, easy guide to grammar rules, tricks and info.

This book changed my life! I took a class in college from tbe author and this was the textbook. I have been in advertising and marketing for the past 12 years and I use this book all the time. It's so easy to use and the info is really clear.

The best part is a guide at tbe back that explains the distinctions between commonly misused words. For Example: farther/further (farther--physical distance-throw the ball farther and further --degree,time or quanity - discuss the issue further); since/because (since -- denotes a period of time -it's been many years since we've been together and because gives a reason or cause); irregardless(isn't a word) etc. I recommend this book to everyone--it's great.

The Answer to Beginner Grammarians' Nightmares

Review Date: 2004-04-09
This guide wittily walks its readers through the rules of English grammar, breaks down every principle, identifies the most common mistakes among writers and gives excellent insight on how to fix these errors. The last 37 pages (the Topical Guide to Grammar and Word Use) simply list every misconception or fallacy regarding word and punctuation misuse and give quick explanations on how to correct these frequent blunders. This book is an absolutely must for any undergraduate student and I recommend it to even the most professional grammarians. It should be considered beginner grammarians' Bible.

I have a number of books on Illustrator 10 and this is the one I refer to the most. It is detailed containing more information in one book than most others, although I haven't found a book yet that answers all of my questions. It is written in an easy to understand way clarifying details that are hard to understand in some other books. Recommend.

Being in the graphics industry for many years and now teaching visual communications at a local college I found this book to be one of the most comprehensive books out there. The title really sums it all up ... A step-by-step approach. The book illustrates and walks you through each topic clearly and thoroughly. After each topic the books is filled with activities and assignments to reinforce the topics.

After reviewing many books this books is top on my list. This is one of the few books that covers graphing.

All in all the book is excellent.
