This new book about lemurs is perfect for young children who are in love with lemurs. The photos of several types of lemurs are large and crisp, and the text is not too deep into animal behavior that it feels like a science textbook. My four year old was totally into this book!

This is a great book for the intermediate player to understand checkmates in GM games. There are a lot of variations and some of the moves appear out of nowhere. The book is organized by themes. Not for the beginning player though.Ideal for 1400-1800 player. I am closer to the lower end.

fascinating tour of McDo and the country, since 1955

This is a beautiful glossy book on both the development of the McDonald's concept and how the US changed in this period. I was thoroughly engrossed by the book and greatly enjoyed the pictures.
It was, of course, written in celebration of the company at the 50th anniversary of the first Kroc McDo in Des Plaines, Illinois. From that point, as we know, the company grew into one of the most potent cultural forces in the world, which this book chronicles. THere are no startling revelations, of course, and hence the book is not at all critical. The reader will have to go elsewhere for that, and much of its substance can be found in "Behind the Golden Arches" already.
But what you get is a detailed explanation in vivid portraits of the usual McDo structure: the corporate offices, the owner/operators, and the suppliers. Each is like a leg on a stool, and operate largely as autonomous companies in a shared ecosystem. That is a key to the McDo success story, as they have incentives to work together, but must be painstakingly convinced to do so: the corporation cannot order them around. That makes change difficult, but when it occurs, very deep and longlasting. Then there is the history of the US, even when there are painful memories such as the Vietnam War, and how it inter-related with McDOnald's growth.
THere are many odd facts here, such as WIllard Scott, who was the first Ronald McDOnald on DC TV. But there are also the many experiemnts that led to the current menu and cultural "message" of the company.
This is a feelgood volume, to be sure. But it is fascinating, well written, and beautifully illustrated. With all the criticism of this massive company, this is fun.
Recommended. But if you want to delve very deeply, you must look elsewhere.

Seasoned journalist and storyteller John McDonald offers a nice selection of Maine stories that include his own astute observations, reactions to news items, and answers to readers' questions. More than 70 vignettes are organized into seven chapters, with topics as varied as tourists, black flies, yard sales, county fairs, funky mailboxes, and town meetings. McDonald confirms as true the rumor that people "from away" who order delivery of live lobsters often discard them because the creatures they receive aren't red. Many Mainers report relatives or far-flung friends making that costly (and silly) error.
This easy and fun read gives you the flavor of Maine, and natives will certainly relate to it. It's especially funny if you've been there as a tourist and can laugh at yourself and the traffic you cause. Some tales are similar to ones told in Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and the New York Adirondacks. Is it just the northern climate that makes people so interesting, or do the long winters themselves lead to such storytelling? Some of these narrations are simply universal, and Maine is merely the background. More than a few of them will have you nodding and smiling.
This book is more substantial (and quite frankly, funnier) than typical regional humor paperbacks. Forget all those you-know-you're-from-[location] throwaway joke books available at tacky rest stops and order this one instead. You'll be better off.
Attention fiction readers: Mr. McDonald seems to be a real-life version of Jim Qwilleran, the character made famous by Lilian Jackson Braun's "Cat Who" mysteries. If you like reading items from "The Qwill Pen," you'll enjoy the stories in this book, even if you've never set foot in Maine.

For anyone who has ever seen the scattered prehistoric indian mounds throughout the upper Ohio valley and wondered what lies beneath, Mounds For The Dead is a fascinating account of the excavation of a large Adena mound near the Ohio river in West Virginia. Dragook takes the reader level by level through the mound, describing the artifacts and burials found within each "tomb". There are some unexpected surprises including a skeleton over 7 feet tall. The findings of the burial are placed into context of earlier excavations of mounds and a nice summary of the Adena culture follows.

If you're new to the seattle area and want to explore the best parks around, this is the book for you. It has maps of trails in nearby parks, lists hours and features, and has two or pages of summaries about each park. It lists out which trails are steep, which ones dogs or horses can go on, where there are picnic facilities, parking, and anything else you'd need to know.

When a dumb kid's parents bring him to Cal for help, he thinks he has solved the problem with a few minor demons, although not the forgetting Valentine's day girlfriend problem.
That wasn't all, though, a rather nasty succubus is still around.
