McDonald's Books

I am about to leave for Africa, so I needed some preparation. McDonald's book exactly served my needs. It is helpful, with both technical advice and inspiring photographs. He makes you believe that you will be successful. I later found referrals to this book in the nature photography usenet group; so it seems that others find the book helpful as well. Small enough to take along. Packing lists too.

Oh how hard it was to control the tears that fell as I read this great piece of literature from one of my new favorites.. Lewis Binswanger

This is my review of my book Pythons. I think that it had good facts. It wasn't too long and not too short. This book is for ages,well there is no ages it is just for snake lovers! The only thing I didn't like about it was it didn't tell you how to take care of certain snakes such as the Ball Python. It warned you that if you get a little snake it could get like 13FT long,and that you have to get new cages all the time because they grow so much. It also shows and tells you about many pictures. Well that is what I think of the story Pythons...

First, Quirks and Quarks is a great radio show on CBC radio. So in line with the quality of that production you have this wonderful book that addresses everyday questions that are not that intuitive to answer.

A good example is the question about catching the same cold twice. I read the answer one morning and that very evening at a meeting someone mentioned that they caught the same cold twice. I pointed out with authority that he could not have caught the "same" cold twice, based on Dr. Kathryn Wright's answer to that very issue.

All the answers to the questions are presented by academic experts who just seem like your next door neighbor, or in some cases someone you would want living next door to you.

Now, you don't make too many friends going around acting like you know everything so I would suggest that the book be used with caution in this respect. On the other hand it is a wonderful tool to work with your children on answering their perplexing questions. Though, one deficiency is the lack of an index.

With this book you may not have to tell your child to go and ask your spouse for the answer as to why the wheel that just fell off your axel is running ahead of the car.

You can also have science night with your kids (probably 8 years old and up) and on a regular basis read one of the questions and then the answer. A discussion would follow and maybe some follow-up effort if need be. But the responses are presented in laypersons terms and does not require a PhD. It really can be a family event that teaches everyone a little more about this miraculous world we live in.

The bottom line is that the information in this book is interesting, approachable and just down right fun.

Too many times reading comprehension exercises are based on stories a student would never choose to read on his or her own. The stories in this book are different--genuinely interesting and informative on a range of non-fiction topics from stunt doubles to ancient Egyptians. My son wants to take a peek at the following story all the time just because he wants to find out what it's about--makes me feel good about reading comprehension lessons!

The publisher grants teachers the right to copy lessons (eleven lessons in this twenty-page book) for a single classroom's use (not entire school or commercial). The reading comprehension objectives covered in this book are typically taught in the 6th through 9th grade according to the publisher. My son reads at about the sixth or seventh grade level and the exercises in this book are the perfect challenge for him.

Reclaiming the Wesleyan Tradition offers a short course in the practical teachings of 18th century British preacher John Wesley. Instead of spending time writing abstract theology, Wesley's theological insights are found in his sermons, which have not been the easiest pieces of literature to read since they are written in the voice of an 18th century Anglican priest. The authors of this book make the language real, providing commentary, guidance, and a most important glossary. They also suggest daily readings and ways to engage in the study within a small group, which is a very Wesleyan approach as well. My group and I gained fresh insights into our own lives of Christian faith from this 18th century preacher.

True/false/recovered memories/reconstructions was a hotly debated topic in the 90's which appears to have died down somewhat, possibly as a result of even handed books such as this one. The wuthos discusses the topic fronm all possible points of view, pointing out the strengths and weaknesses of each, and freeing the reader to assess each case individually.

This is a powerful book that gives specific information that can help a person to change how they function in relationships and how they view others in relationships. It is a very empowering work. The many scenarios how to drive the points home. It explains the concepts that can help a couple to relate, be happy, and stay together. I've never read a book like it.

This book turned my life around. It almost scares me to think what turn my life may have taken had I not come across this gem in my desceased grandfather's desk drawer. It is almost as if he left it for me as one final and all important gift. The industry was just ripping me apart, I had no direction and no drive any longer, though I am quite a talented person.
