A classic book about Modern IsraelReview Date: 2005-08-02
McDonald's diaries show that as early as 1933, he believed that the Nazis were considering the mass killing of Europe's Jews. McDonald had met with and interviewed Hitler on April 8, 1933.
One of the more striking parts of this book tells of McDonald's meeting with of Ernest Bevin in 1948. The author was "aghast" at Bevin's arrogance and lies. Facing him, he had to tell himself "that this was not Hitler seated before me but His Majesty's Principle Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs." And he reports that Bevin, like Hitler and Mussolini in his interviews with them in the 1930's, had impressed him with a "complete sense of ruthlessness." Those who want to get a little first-hand information about Bevin may want to read this book.
In August, 1948, the British officials that McDonald met with were very strongly against recognizing Israel. Instead, many of them hoped to destroy it, or at least remove the Negev and Jerusalem from it. And they hoped to get the United Nations to declare Israel as an aggressor and thus coax the United States into cooperating in sanctions against Israel. The author also met with Count Bernadotte, whom he characterizes in this book as "charming, public spirited, wholly devoted but not unusually able or perceptive." As McDonald relates, Bernadotte had suggested giving all of Jerusalem to the Arabs. This totally discredited Bernadotte among the Jews. Bernadotte basically favored (and appeared to parrot) anti-Israeli proposals put forth by the British Foreign Office.
McDonald's book continues by telling of the events of the ensuing couple of years. He's at his best in describing the many public figures he met with. Given the amount of absurd "revisionist" history about this time period, I recommend this dose of reality to those who want to know about the early days of modern Israel.

Knowledge Filled Account of Black WomenReview Date: 2002-02-18
a sista's attitude, but it was a story by and about the
lived experiences of Black women in contemporary culture.
The twentieth century has been as era of perpetual growth
and development for Black women in American society. And
the book aptly states, "From the popular culture of
advertising and film at the turn of the century where the
image of 'mammy' was pervasive; to the 1960s where the
image of 'welfare queen' was on the rise; to the present
where Black women's stories, both true and fiction, rise
to the top of bestsellers' list; Black women are continuing
to move from that predefined object, to self-defining
subjects AND toward center".
This book is a potent knowledge filled account of Black
women on the rise. It is expertly broken into two sections:
Section I - SISTUHS IN THE IVORY TOWER:
EXPERIENCE IN THE ACADEMY
Section II - SISTUHS READING:
QUIET STRUGGLES THROUGH LITERATURE
This is an excellent study guide, as it chronicles the
struggles, the victories and of course the 'nature', of
Black women. Much research was expended to develop this
book and the information shared shows truth in the once
popular expressions 'we've come a long ways baby', but it
also points out that, as an equally popular song says,
'we've only just begun'.
This is a must read if you want documented facts and
statistics showing how we have become who we are. Kudos
to all involved with this product.

Another Valuable Texana SourceReview Date: 2003-01-10
I prefer his books to the more current crop of writers who have a personal axe to grind. The Old Stone Fort played a part in the history of Fort Anahuac in a round-about way. In late July of 1832,Colonel Piedras had marched from Nacogdoches to the relief of Colonel Bradburn, who was under attack from the Anglo rebels in Anahuac. By the time he arrived, the garrison was ready to surrender. Returning home, Piedras feared another Anglo insurrection and ordered the civilians to turn in their firearms. This led to a confrontation and a running skirmish on the Angelina River. The "Old Stone Fort" was captured by the rabble and Piedras was forced to surrender several days later. The Battle of Nacogdoches was just one of the many early clashes against the Centralists.

One of the Finest Books on Fly Fishing You Will Ever Read...Review Date: 2005-07-30
If you have not read this book, you must, or you will have missed out on one of the great works of sporting literature. I have also tied some of the flies she describes but as of yet, I have been unable to use any of them. I love seeing the "yellow leaper" in my fly box and simply cannot bring myself to use it.
Thank you Juliana Berners, and thank you, John McDonald for bringing to us, such wonderful and thoughtful insight to the mystery of the sport of fly fishing.
