McDonald's Books

I am a USCF Class A player and finally decided to switch back to 1.e4 full-time for the first time since 1997. I had been mainly using 1.d4 and varying with other first moves (1.c4, 1.e4, and 1.Nf3) according to my opponent, tournament situation, and most of all my current confidence in the kinds of positions that I could or couldn't play.

I have more than a basic grasp of 1.e4 and have decent knowledge of a number of systems, so I was not starting from scratch. Having said that, I found this book-on-CD immensely valuable as it made sensible choices of variations to play and provided games that seemed to fit well with it.

Chess publishing houses should feel stupid that they do not make more books available on CD (ChessBase format). Even if they charged $40 I would still pay, because the learning is so much more effective. I am convinced that chessplayers would buy them through the roof. It is possible that if I had the paperback version I would not have liked this work as much, but on CD it is everything I wanted and a bit more than I expected.

I don't expect a complete treatment of every opening in a "Starting Out" book, but I wanted this to orient me back into the 1.e4 world and it accomplished that. It is now up to me to acquire the more specific knowledge of variations that I will need in tournament play.

If I'm in Class A and this CD helped me a lot, I KNOW it can help beginning and intermediate players. Again, even if you don't accept all of McDonald's lines, the ones you do like will stick easier.

In the past I have entered analysis from books into my ChessBase to make study easier and it is very time-consuming. With this product, that clearly wasn't necessary and for the price it was a no-brainer purchase for me.

History at the ground level, McDonald weaves a personal narrative from Korea, to Germany to Vietnam. Less the story of one solider's rise through Special Forces and OCS than an account of how one logic guided nuclear weapons across moonlit German forests and sent another -- equally great -- generation to two East Asian Wars. A must read for Cold War buffs and military ethusiasts.

This is a Great Book, written by the REAL Ronald McDonald from the family that started McDonalds. I found it funny, entertaining and very informative. The reciepes will astound you and I am not a good cook. The History part was very interesting. Mr. McDonald is truly the Worlds Expert on Hamburgers and it shows in his book.

This is a great book for giving or keeping - it not only has good recipes but wonderful art work. Definitely a keeper or a gift idea.

"The Cornea" represents a mainstone in the literature on this topic. Any ophthalmologist, scholar, student or eye banker who wants to understand the basics of cornea's anatomy, physiology and disease must read this book.

I have several books in real analysis including those by rudin, kolmogorov, reisz, etc. Of all the book I have on real analysis, this is by far the most lucid. It is thicker than all of them but only because the authors (McDonald and Weiss) spend time in explaining and motiviating the material. I have learned more in a shorter amount of time from this book than any other advanced math book I own (and I own at least 50 on everything from topology to stochastic processes to algebra). The proofs are clear and the steps are explained in layman's terms (at the level of something like Scientific American's typical readership). The material covers the Lebesgue theory of integration, abstract measure theory, mesure theoretic probability, hilbert spaces, etc. My goal is to learn stochastic calculus beyond the mere manipulation of Ito's lemma and I must say this book, more than any other, is getting me to that level of mathematical maturity quickly. Now I feel pretty confident I can understand that proof in HJM (for you finance buffs out there) involving the stochastic version of Fubini's theorem that always bugged me!

Give good for start to the end of couple life.

Ive just been lent a copy of Cruising the Movies from a friend who found a copy in the Sydney City Library. The chapter on Nick Nolte is enough for me to buy a copy from Amazon whatever the price. And this description of Italian westerns says it all:

"The main problem was probably that Italian westerns were made by cast-offs of all nations and dialogue was dubbed after filming, seemingly by any old cab driver or telephone operator who happened to be passing by the dubbing studio when a little speech was needed."

The articles are mainly from Christopher Street pre 1985 by Boyd McDonald and are definitely politically incorrect and hilarious.

A great book for anyone, young or old. Full of information and fun facts of dachshunds. :)
