John Peyton was 87 years old when this book came out in 1994. It reflects 87 years of wisdom, appreciation of birches, and experiences among traditional "Birch Indians" that nobody will ever have again. Full of facts, devoid of rhetoric and arm-waving, yet infused with soul, this is good, biological natural history writing at its best. Mr. Peyton simply cannot write a bad sentence. Don't wait until you are an octogenarian to read this fine ode to a beautiful tribe of trees.

Birds of Shenandoah National Park, Blue Ridge Parkway, and Great Smoky Mountains National Park is a convenient, full-color field guide that lends itself to easy use by amateur birdwatchers and professional researchers alike. Birds of Shenandoah National Park features a brief entry for each of 336 avian species sighted in the area of Blue Ridge in North Carolina and Virginia, and the Great Smoky Mountains. Each entry consists of the species' common name, its scientific name, its approximate size, a verbal description of its appearance and characteristic habits, and a brief summary of where it can be found during what seasons of the year; yet by far the most valuable identifier are the illustrations, almost all of which are in full color. An index, a checklist, and a brief supplementary section of birds that are not common in the area round out this elegantly useful guide.

This is a quiet but strong collection of poems. Underneath the prosaic, seemingly trivial and everyday situations depicted in many (although not all) of these poems is an underlying turbulence and subdued violence that must reflect the reality of living at the end of the twentieth century in Ireland. Reading these poems is like having a breakfast conversation with the poet, after which you go home and ponder what was said. An excellent choice for lovers of good contemporary poetry.

Dr. McDonald has written a novel based on historical facts as he takes us through the Bitterroot Mountains of Idaho. The Chinese laborers become real as they look for gold in the 1860s. The greed for gold touches the lives of every man.
Then in the 1960s McDonald brings us forward one hundred years. It is a mystery but also a well-developed look at forestry and the real grit of these men who preserve our national treasure of trees.

This is the first book in a series that CSM (ret) Mike Martin wrote on the efforts of U.S. Advisors to the Vietnamese Army. This is an excellent read and it covers the entire history of the Vietnamese Rangers from their bare beginings to the end fo the war. The second book in the set is Angels in Red Hats, about the Vietnamese Airborne; and the last just released is called Warriors of the Sea, about the Vietnamese Marines. All of these books are wonderful and I advise everybody that is the least bit interested in this subject to pick these up and indulge themseleves.

On the way back from Lake Tahoe, my parents and I stopped by Bodie and I am telling you that place is so great to go to. This book is history and I think it would be a great history book to give your kids. That place is from the 1800's. I recammend this book to everyone. It might be small book but it is still great for learning.

Book of the Akita

This book is a must for both the potential and actual owners of the Akita. Joan McDonald Brearley has given the reader an enormous amount of information most valuble to the understanding of the breed. From puppyhood to adulthood one can see the progression of a small "teddybear" face puppy to the most regal of all canine faces. Changes not only to the physical aspects but to the mental attitude of the adult dog. This is disgussed thru out the book. She also has supplied the reader a much larger than normal amount of photographs of high quality. This in my mind, is most valuable if one is to compare for breeding stocks, types from other countries, and or just for the pleasure of viewing such beautiful animals. After ten years of owning this book I still am unable to refrain from looking at it if not for the written information or maybe the photographs alone. The author has provided a wonderful service to both the Akita breed and their owners/admires by sharing her knowledge with us.

Review from one his students

Review Date: 2001-02-18
Being a tutee of the author has given me a unique perspective on the work. Peter's examination of the animosity between Arnold Bennett and Virginia Woolf is highly illuminating and will be useful to first years stressed about Moderations. This particular reviewer was also keen on Peter's use of Bourdieu throughout the text. Bourdieu's sociological theories have come into prominence, especially as they formed the basis of Toril Moi's new work on Feminism (What is a Woman) and it seems to be that these two critics would find much in common. All in all, this is a good effort and, while it betrays the eagerness of style that is common with younger academics, signals the emergence of a radically historical and radically textual politics in the literary sphere. We await with eagerness his latest effort tackling the linguistics of detective fiction.

Excellent Comic Strip
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2002-02-24
The continuing adventurers of my favorite theif, this book continues Bruno's further adventures. Bruno is a refreshing and original comic,in which the main character, is stupid, selfish, greedy, and murderous. he's not afraid to kill a baby unicorn, or club a baby seal, but he still manages to foil evil demon's plans (who work part time as bar-tenders, or managing a fast-food restraunt) usually through sheer stupidity. I especially like how the strip continues to evolve, more characters are introduced, and the history of Rothland and Bruno is revealed. The book is quite an interesting read, and enormously funny, I reccomend all to get it immediantly.

Offers clear and concise reasons as to why the Catholic faith falters under examination. It lists an entire range of non-biblical teachings, beliefs and practices besides the widely known practice of worshipping Mary. Provides first-hand accounts of what Catholic thoughts are of their church.
