Tennis Books

This is the third year I've ordered the US Open wall calendar as a gift for my tennis coach and she's been thrilled each time! Excellent photographs, all the great players, all year round!

Good coverage of all the fundamental aspects of playing tennis. Good photos and illustrations to make the points understandable and clear to the reader. Not much needs to be updated even though the game has evolved because the author stays clear on stressing the right fundamentals in approaching the game.

Bill Allen is a great player and coach. These insights are valuable to anyone who aspires to tennis greatness.

Again, the Deustcher Tennis Bund authorities come up with a comprehensive gem! The earlier book in the Tennis Course series wasn't as strong but this volume is one of the definite books on Coaching Tennis. It is highly theoretical so it doesn't give coaches or teachers the practical side.

Students may not find this book useful, but any parent of a competitive player might find it valuable to see what theory is out there and if their pro/coach uses them. Coaches can use this resource which is "unpolitical" so it doesn't concern itself with subjectivity (which many coaching books do!).

Most other coaching books don't address theory. It is a bit dry and can be more creative but it ranks with the International Tennis Federation's Advanced Coaches Manual and Chuck Kriese's Coaching Tennis.

This manual provides unbelievable quantity and quality of information relative to all types of tennis courts.

A must have for anyone that has a tennis court or is contemplating a tennis court.

This book covers the basics as well as advanced and even is tabbed, so if you want to read something on court between games(a-la Boris) this may help your game. Mr. McNab is a true student of the game and offers many great thoughts for practice and matches. It is neatly organized and covers the main topics of forehand, backhand, net play, serves, and competing. I can't say enough good about this book, if you don't have a copy in your library, you should get one before they are all gone. I just wish I had had this book 35 years ago when I was beginning to play a lot.

This is one of the two best books on doubles, the other being Blaskower's ART OF DOUBLES. Easy and fun book to read and gain understanding of doubles positions and strategy. It provides the type of training that identifies you as a "smart" player. You'll appreciate the thought and mental preparation you and your partner gain to help you beat better players. Why wait until you're one set down to try to figure things out on the court, in the heat of the battle? Think about your optimum plays and positions before you need them. If they sold this book at the tennis clubs the pros would be out of business! Good buy for teams.

This is an excellent book. It is to the point, well written and humorous. It is not a book of stroke technique but rather a book about strategies and techniques that will help you win, assuming you have basic stroke techniques mastered. It provides a plethora of useful tips that can be used in every match you play. Sections on singles, doubles and mixed doubles emphasize different approaches and strategies to be more effective with the strokes you already have. For players who already have good strokes but don't anticipate well, don't volley for winners, double-fault on big points, etc. this will be a very useful book. I am a 4.0 all court player and found it quite helpful.

Sports exercises and games can be difficult to explain, but Matsuzaki does an excellent job of describing tennis exercises. Her writing style is clear and straightforward. Matsuzaki has given me an arsenal of fun and skill-building tennis activities. My personal favorite: The Pick Line Game (p. 81).

Great guide for the tennis enthusiast...gives simple but effective exercises to strengthen key muscles used in tennis. Exercises improved my game and helped to decrease muscle soreness in my shoulder and elbow.
