Dr. Gordon lays the foundation for successful leadership. His book describes the very basics that must be mastered by leaders who wish to be effective. The L.E.T. tells you how you aquire followers and what turns off your subordinates. He describes listening techniques as no one else has ever done. If you only purchase one book on leadership this should be the one.

One of the best on leadership - a classic.

Dr. Gordon's pioneering book "Group-Centered Leadership" was published in 1955. Later he wrote best selling "Parent Effectiveness Training," highly praised Teacher Effectivess Training and this leadership book. I still believe Gordon is one of the most influential thinkers on the topic of working well with others. His "No-Lose" method was later re-invented as the "Win-Win" method of problem solving. Learning his active listening method and using it for the past 30 years has been the most valuable tool I've had in becoming a successful parent, spouse and business person. I've solved many problems by doing nothing except listen to others. I've also mediated many crisis situations for global companies and health organizations by teaching and using active listening with those involved in the conflicts.

I loved this book. Anne Bruce doesn't waste any time re-inventing the wheel. She gives solid suggestions based on best practices from some of the world's leading organizations. I especially liked the action based exercises designed to implement change immediately. Anne also has a great sense of humor which comes through in this easy to read and easy to follow road map for leaders.

Leaders - Start to Finish is an exceptional hands-on, comprehensive approach that can be used to develop leaders at all levels. Anne Bruce "gets to the point" quickly and offers real world tips, techniques, tools and strategies to develop leadership competencies. The book takes an interactive approach by including case studies, exercises, checklists, discussion questions, assessments, etc. that helps the reader apply the content within each chapter. A must read and a great resource for those who want to develop their own leadership capabilities as well as those who coach or train leaders.

Anne Bruce's latest book is a practical and useful guide for the impementation of a leadership development strategy. Thoughtfully formatted, "Leaders..." is a straight forward road map for training professionals and general managers who are searching for ways to fill critical leadership holes. Anne Bruce has a wonderful gift for cutting to the point and making a complex subject easier to grasp. "Must reading" for organizational development people!

This is so clearly written that even a business idiot like me can understand what "authenticity" and "the 10 competencies" and "values-led approach" mean. "Leaders Start to Finish" is accessible and clear, a workbook and journal, as well as a manual. It's also very inspirational. Altogether much more than "just a book" and invaluable for the group leader. I just hope Anne Bruce's next book takes on the lonely entrepreneur.

Review Date: 2001-02-12
There's a great guy on my church board that flips out whenever anyone uses the phrase "paradigm shift," so in his honor I will say instead that what Dr. Farber-Robertson has done here with the conventions of ministerial leadship is a kind of aikido - you don't know quite how she can read your mind or how she could have been present at your last committee meeting, but her understanding of ministerial dynamics is profound. Not only that, she deftly and with great honesty, insight and integrity, changes the rules of the game so that you are empowered rather than whithered by her astute perceptions. As any practicing parish minister knows, congregational life is breathtakingly challenging as well as deeply satisfying. Dr. Farber-Robertson understands the intricacies of power, communication, mutual understanding and genuine collaboration. I could recognize myself in virtually every case study that was presented. This was both discomfitting as well as reassuring. But the best reason to read this book, in addition to feeling as if you've had a session at the mindreader's, is to learn about ways to rethink what you're doing as well as the strategies for change. And it won't matter what brand of minister or rabbi you are - her understanding of the traps we create or find ourselves in, and the path to liberation and transformation, apply to any religious leader who wants with all of their heart and soul to be a more skillful and powerful force for embodying Love's purpose among human beings.

I strongly recommend this book. Although it is written within the context and perspective of professional ministers, or students of ministry, the suggestions apply to anyone who wants to improve his or her communications with others, and better understand the "whys" behind the ways in which we fail our intentions by self-made traps of "skilled incompetence". This book has impacted my thinking in many positive ways. As I began to implement these strategies I was able to effectively mediate between people in my organization, to help them see how they got to where they were, and to commit to taking constructive practical steps to reconcile their differences. I also helped resolve a family squabble by unraveling the misunderstandings that arose from unspoken, wrong assumptions. I am very glad to have these new tools and skills for better communications, which have given me more confidence in facing those inevitable knots in relationships that need to be undone.

I am just back from a workshop on reflective practice with seventeen theological students. We used Anita's book as background reading for our encounter. The students demonstrated an ability to engage in the challenging work so well described in "Learning while Leading" This book earths the complex theory and practice of action science in a manner that enables beginners pick up and run with the concepts. I witnessed the enabling power of Anita's stories and teachings. These students engaged in real co-consultancy of one another's ministry. I recommed the book to beginners and to those who are experienced in reflective practice. It is a good read and a cleverly written handbook for those serious about learning to be effective in ministry.

This book is excellent for both the novice and veteran horseperson. There are a few mistakes that the editor didn't catch (some spelling errors of people mentioned in the text), but overall a very attractive and informative book. This book has a deep personal meaning for me because in the late 1970's I was fortunate to have been a "student" of Bobby's at his ranch in Pleasant Grove, CA. Even as a young girl I admired Bobby's talent with horses and one should especially take note of how he uses his hands when he rides. As a horseperson I also tried to immitate his light touch on a horses' mouth. It's very fitting that the cover photograph is a picture of Bobby's hands!

Beautiful!! Beautiful!!

The Mexican Traditions on starting green horses has been handed down from generation to generation. The Jaquima came first, with it the colt was taught to handle himself to perfection and bridling is the last step.

Training horses is a serious business..., the Bible of training colt with Hackamore is Ed Connell book, but if you want to tune some details of your training with the hackamore, this it is the book that you need.

The legendary California Hackamore and the stocke Horse is another great book with enormous tips and knowledge, beautiful pictures!!.

Right Now I'm looking for the Benny Guitron DVD, the Master on training horses with Jaquima.

El Vaquero Mexicano "El Charro" ---- The American Cowboy "The Gentleman".

¡Hermoso! ¡Hermoso!

"The Legendary California Hackamore and the stock horse", es otro gran libro con enormes consejos y conocimientos asi como hermosas fotografias!!.

EL Vaquero Mexicano es "EL Charro" --- El vaquero Americano es "El Caballero".

Bobby Ingersoll has written not only the perfect training manual for starting young horses, but a beautifully illustrated and informative coffee table book as well. He has given credit to the talented artists who braid these hackamores and what is unfortunately becoming a lost art. His soft and gentle style of starting the young colt through feel rather than demanding submission through force will benefit everyone who truly loves horses and strives to be a real horseman. His tribute to the true horsemen and horsewomen of past and present makes you want to just stand up and cheer. Bravo, Bobby Ingersoll!

I recieved this book yesterday, and I have not been able to put it down yet. I find myself reading through the pages and then flipping back and forth to view these amazing pictures again and again. Mark and Kathleen are masters at the work and I am hoping that I will one day be able to participate in one of these clinics. I have always felt like they do about the gentleness of training and building a trusted relationship with my horse, and when I read one of Mark's books for the first time last year, I was hooked. I have read them all... What a treasure this book is.. It is now my offical "coffee table" book...

Review Date: 1998-05-05
Here is a "no holds barred" approach to describing "real life" shortcomings in handling public finances, and then providing tips to local government policy makers and managers on how to avoid a similiar circumstance.

Len Wood writes from first hand knowledge and experience. He describes the situation; outlines the facts; details the results; and provides the reader with suggestions to lessen financial risk and/or failure in the expenditure of public funds.

While the author's primary target is the newly elected official, the importance of this work to experienced elected and appointed public officals cannot be overstated. No one who has worked in the public sector can peruse this book without saying, "There, but for the grace of God, go I!"

An excellent budget, financial and treasury primer.

As an elected Treasurer and local government finance director for the past several years, I found this book to be an excellent primer for all elected and appointed officials. The practical advice offered by Mr. Wood is based on his experience and input from his peers and is extremely valuable. The book is written in a very informal and concise way and should be required reading for all elected officials. In fact, I gave this book to each City Council member and they have all indicated that this book provided excellent financial advice.

Great book for people interested in local government.

I would highly recommend this logbook for anyone who has thought about using a training log, but has found them to be too daunting and clumsy. LogbookONE is so simple(very orginized,) and fun(great visual symbols,) that I actually look forward to writing down my daily runs. Being much more of an "intuitive" runner, I was able to tailor the logbook to fit my style. I used more of the space to describe my dreams and the mood of the run.LogbookONE can be easily used by the most "scientific" of runners, leaving space and symbols for resting heart-rate, weight, sleep, ect. I've seen my training improve since using the logbook and believe every athlete could benefit from using it!

Finally!! A training log that is simple, easy to use and lets a runner get into the detail that he/she needs to keep an accurate log of their training.

I have been using this book now for a month and I love it. You can start the log on ANY date, so you are not tied into the normal calendar. It has places for things that you just don't find in a normal log. Things like time of sleep, heart rate, weights, interval sessions, heartrate, massage, are all easily listed. Only complaint is what took the running world so long to make a log like this!

This book smells like....Victory.

I have been running, training and racing for over 20 years, and this is the best running log that I have come across, by far. This is the only log that I have seen that has been user-friendly. The book is not predated, which is great. Therefore, an athlete can start using the book in January or August. Or you can put the book aside for awhile and start using it later.

I wish this log was around when I was coaching a few years ago, when I was coaching. It would have helped me keep better track of my athlete's training. My kids would have used this book--if for no other reason than the pictures of current and past superstars like Steve Prefontaine, Nicole Teter, Joan Benoit, Mary Decker and Fred Carter. Each picture corresponded with an inspirational quote. The journal allows athletes and coaches to not only track mileage, course and effort--but also heartrate, the amount of sleep each night and several other training aspects. The icons used in the book are really creative and well done. They really did help, and save a lot of writing space (one of my criticisms of other logs, and the reason I used a paper notebook since I graduated high school). The other thing I liked about the journal was that it didn't try to overextend itself by trying to be a training journal, and a how-to-run-a-marathon guide.

Review Date: 2008-08-08
When he says he'll add 10-20 yards to your drives, he's not kidding. I consider myself a bit longer off the tee than average. I assumed what I already knew would be in there. I was right to a degree, but Fister actually embellishes on those tips you all probably pick out of golf mags and hit the range with.

There are 2-3 chapters you read in this book. The rest is fluff about long drive competitions and such, but that doesn't make this book any less of a value.

I was able to hit the backstop of my local range on the roll (albeit infrequently) before I read this book. After just reading the chapter everyone buys this book for and applying 2 or 3 of the tips, I was hitting the backstop in the air (about 10 feet up or so) on the first couple of drives. I can't say how much it gave me, but it's 10 yards at least.

This doesn't just show you how to hit the heck out of it. There's a full chapter devoted to anti-slicing techniques, because long-and-wrong is almost as bad as just plain wrong (at least you're closer to the hole though).

You won't regret the money you spend on this book.

I found the book a quick read and easy to understand. I think you can take a few of the items that Sean lists in the book and definitely increase your potential for more distance.

My only negative was the pages on Sean himself. I know he is a great driver and a good story, but the pages should be on the instruction aspect. This is a common problem in golf instruction books.

Overall, a good book and good instruction. You will get out what you put into Sean's advice.

The "Merck Manual" of Education
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-12-26
This is undoubtedly one of the most popular college texts on teaching; at least, it certainly should be. The authors are leading experts on educational research, and their book is a comprehensive summary of what is known about teaching. Those preparing to be teachers should study it the same way medical students pore over The Merck Manual.

The book speaks with authority on nearly all important areas of instruction. For instance, whereas many popular books and articles repeat the myth that classroom rewards undermine student interest, G&B note that the research consistently shows that praise and other rewards are very beneficial when used properly. And while many teachers believe that high expectations magically transform students, G&B make it clear that it is what teachers do, not what they expect, that helps students learn.

College texts are seldom the sort of book that people turn to for a quick, entertaining read during vacation. However, as college texts go this one is well written and interesting, and it should be read by all teachers and kept on their shelves and referred to frequently.

Dr. Robert F. Mager may be the master of understatement. When you read his precise recipe for creating successful instruction, you are left with the realization that your life could have been much simpler had you encountered this wisdom earlier in your existence. Dr. Mager is not recounting some brand new theory or blinding discovery. He is communicating a logical and systematic process for defining what instruction can do. In the process, he helps you determine if instruction is the solution for your performance problem. He shows you how to set goals, identify task objectives and task sequences, identify the skills and characteristics of the persons you are teaching, and develop and refine your instruction into an effective change agent.
