I had a had time with this book, the dialect really killed it for me. Many of the things Denver says just didn't ring true like, "Cypress trees squatted like spiders on the water", from page 1! I also couldn't put up with the preaching, I just couldn't finish it.

This is a book that i really struggled with while i was reading it... it's a really good read with an absolutely compelling premise, weaving two entirely separate storylines into one threaded connection... if the book had another subtitle, it could apprpriately be "A Cord of Three Strands," referring to the verse in Ecclesiastes that explains the strong bond that is created when God connects two people together...

Though it was really a challenging book for the obvious reason of broadening one's perspective on issues like prejudice, homelessness, and materialism, the most powerful message from where i sit was - not surprisingly - one of love... particularly as the book shared in great detail the painful story of Ron and his wife, Debbie... I'll leave it at that so as not to ruin any of the unknowns, but it might make sense to keep some tissues handy when you read though this one...

"Same kind of different as me" amazed me. It reminded me of places and people in the Ft. Worth I knew and an east Texas I knew. It was sensitive, insightful, thought provoking and inspirational. It was a complete suprise. I've already passed it on to a friend and recommended it to another.

The Quiet Strength of a Principled Role Model

Review Date: 2009-05-21
This book is an inspiring personal account of a spiritual man of integrity and principles who also happens to be a very well-respected and successful (now retired) pro football head coach. I knew of Tony Dungy before I bought and read the book, and it is the strength of his character that compels me to strongly recommend it to parents, teachers, mentors, leaders, and role models.

As a leadership book, I found this book to be a refreshing view of controlled, respectful, principled, and effective leadership that is a viable alternative to the stereotypical 'flashy, fiery, dynamic, domineering sideline dictator' leadership model that dominates the college and pro sports scenes. Whatever your leadership perspectives and preferences are, this book can expand or reinforce them.

I was pleasantly surprised to find that Dungy's greatest leadership lessons do not come from the gridiron. A recurring fundamental theme throughout the book was Dungy's personal faith and how he used that faith to help him, his teams, and his family keep setbacks, challenges, accomplishments, opportunities, and personal tragedies in their proper perspective. Another important life lesson embedded in the book was how influential Dungy's late parents have been in shaping the man and leader he has become. I have added many of the quotes and anecdotes of his parents that appear throughout the book to my list of lessons I will pass on to my young son.

Dungy summed up the purpose of the book, and described the greatest and most rewarding leadership challenge in life with his closing sentence: "We are all role models to someone in this world, and we can all have an impact - for good." This book has helped me to be a better role model, and I believe it can do the same for anyone who reads it.

It is such a treat to see my 8 year old daughter read this book. She thinks about it and talks about it in between reading. Sometimes we read it together because she wants to share what she loves with me. She fills me in on what I miss when I don't read with her. She reads every night (later than she should!) because she can't wait to find out who Mandy's secret friend turns out to be. I can't believe how she has become so enchanted by Mandy and her secret and so interested in finding out what will happen in the end. I think she enjoys this as much or even more than The Last of the Really Great Whangdoodles.

I first read this book when I was in Jr. High in the late 1970's. I absolutely loved it! Much later, in the early 1990's, I was teaching 4th grade when one of my students showed me the book she had just checked out from the library...it was "Mandy!" I was thrilled. It was like being reunited with an old friend again! I read it aloud to my class that year and they all loved it. Now I teach 1st grade and I still read it every year aloud to my class. The book is about a young girl who lives in an orphanage. She finds a wonderful cottage to call her own. It is such a sweet book by Julie (Andrews) Edwards...(who also starred in my favorite movie "The Sound of Music!")

I am so excited that I finally found this book .

I have not read it in over 20 years and I can remember the story like I read it yesterday! I have tried to find it in the past but never thought about Amazon until today. I could not remember the Author, now that I know I am not surprised it is Julie Andrews Collection I have read other stories from her collection and love them all.
I now have a young daughter of my own and I can not wait to share this story with her!

This beautifull but tragic remember to humanity that we are equal. So i recomend to buy this book, so anyone can treat the homosexuals equal as if they are heterosexual. GREAT BOOK.

A romantic tragedy you'll not soon forget

As far as short stories go BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN, at 64 pages, is one of the best. Not a traditional Western, but rather a more modern (1960s through 1980s) story of two young rodeo cowboys who fall in love one summer while working as sheepherders on the title mountain. The characterizations are deep and very true to the era and one can really feel the pain of yearning that young gay men of that era would truly feel, and understand the circumstances of how one of them at least, felt it was impossible to make a life together; so they would meet up at different periods in their lives to rekindle the romance. While it is a tragic story, it is expertly written and Annie Proulx's prose is meticulous in its intent. The characters are so concrete they will stay with you for a long time.

This is the version to get if you are interested in comparing the story to the screenplay, as of course the movie takes the entire short story and expands it. Also included are revealing essays by Annie Proulx, Diana Ossana , and Larry McMurtry.

This item took you through the entire life of the book to the screenplay to the movie. It was great reading what the writers said about the project and how it was a labor of love for everyone involved. It was wonderful reading how devoted everyone was to the project. Much how the two main characters were devoted to each other.

It's ok if you like cowboy movies

I had to purchase this book for a college course, otherwise I probably would never have read it. I found it boring and realized that it's probably better suited for either men who like cowboy stories, or people who are into studying how to create a screenplay from a move. The screenplay stays very true to the short story. The best part about this book is the essay in the back by Proulx. I suggest you read it before you read the short story as it answered my main question, which is why a straight woman in her 60s would write a story about rough cowboys who were having trouble accepting their sexual orientation.

In an effort to check out my approach to writing a book adaption to screenplay, I thought it would be a good exercise to experience how others have done it. After reading the Brokeback Mountain short story, then reading the shooting script, then watching the film, I knew I was right on target. It is invigorating to experience and understand the progression from story to screenplay to film. The book also includes backround information from the short story writer, Annie Proulx and the two screenwriters, Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana, which tops off the value of this book. Reading it is a great process, and once you've read the book, you'll appreciate the film even more.

Keladry of Mindalen has passed her test and is now a full page, dreaming of becoming a knight. Kel is keeping up with life but it's getting hard. She still has to handle to fact that many, many people are still mad about her becoming a page. While she deals with this she is trying to maintain her training. And ALSO trying to deal with her feelings for her best friend, Nealan of Queenscove. In other words life is hectic for Keladry of Mindalen.
In this book there is a part where Keladry shows her skills and leads her friends out of a sticky situation where they're trapped by a group of bandits while the pages are on a little 'field trip'.

"Ladies have no place bearing arms..." I've said it once and I'll say it again...that's WRONG!

I hope you'll read this book, 'Page'. I'm sure you'll love it.

I gave the first of this series 5 stars, and reluctantly subtract one for the execution of her second. The premise is sound - she planned to deal with Kel as a child, a Page, a Squire, and finally as Lady Knight, but the pace and high drama of this book left many things feeling a bit rushed.

Firstly, expect the content to be notably more mature than in First Test. Kel deals with hitting puberty, hitting boys, being hit by boys, and a brutal regimen of forcing down her phobias. This, in addition to intense training, having (and dealing) with crushes on her fellow Pages, and proving over and over and over that she can and will "run with the big boys."

Despite cramming several years worth of experience (literally) into this book, Pierce does an admirable job of containing and streamlining it. The years are well defined, and the individual 'quests' are tightly written and clear. This book also handles the development of Kel's unique abilities in command. Her growing sympathy for commoners and the weak is showcased in a series of growing climaxes. The ending sequence is especially well-done, and younger readers will be very impressed with Kel's maturity and self-sacrifice.

Again, I find that Pierce writes extremely appropraitely for the age-level (estimating by Kel's own age, the pre-teen market) and I find that her focus on morality and strength of conviction in difficult circumstances is fitting for younger readers. I wholeheartedly suggest these books for parents wishing to instil those ideals in their children, in addition to reading them because they are simply VERY nicely crafted books.

**Lastly, as I warned for First Test = Parents who are very careful of the sexual, homosexual, or magical encounters their children have - PLEASE read these books before handing them over to your kids. I personally see nothing wrong with her handling of delicate issues, but you might. And to set your child on a series of entertaining books, and then later ban them for dealing with unfortunate subjects - this makes rebellious and NEEDLESSLY unhappy children. Please, if you are sensitive to sexual references (including a brief mention of homosexuality and extremely frank dealings with rape) and/or the use and presence of magic, please make sure YOU read this first.

I bought this book based on the recommendation from a parenting website and would recommend it to any new parent. It covers the important issues and cuts straight to the point instead of giving a lengthy background about why you should or should not do something.

My wife ended up reading the book as well and said it was better than all the "mother" books she has read.

Be Prepared reminds me of the Boy Scout Handbook only with humor as an added bonus! (Probably by design). This book is the perfect nuts and bolts manual for early childhood rearing packed with answers to the questions you are almost certainly already asking yourself. Great practical advice and light of heart to keep first fathers from freaking out. It gives you the real scoop on the major things you should know and keeps you in perspective. I highly recommend this book if this is your first baby, as it is mine. One caveat though, it is a from-the-day-of-birth manual and does not cover the pregnancy term. If you are looking for advice during the pregnancy, you will have to look elsewhere.

I received this book as a gift, and it's my favorite "how-to" book for new dads. Not only is the advice rock solid, but the drawings are wonderfully funny. (I especially enjoyed the good-bye salute to the breasts.) The only thing I would change is the section about the rectal themometers--the forehead scanners are the new go-to for temp taking. Buy this book for yourself or a new dad in your life, you will be happy you did!

Saving the world is just great!

What does it feel like to save the world? If you don't know, read the Alex Rider series, by Anthony Horowitz. In particular, Eagle Strike. I gave it a five star rating. It was my favorite book. It had a lot of action in almost every chapter. It kept me occupied. The book was about Alex Rider, a teen spy. He does missions to help the world and find out about the death of some of his family members. His mission this time is to investigate pop star Damion Cray, and stop him from partially destructing the earth with nuclear bombs. The problem is, Alex's spy group doesn't believe that this will happen. Will Alex be a success? He doesn't know what he will be in for. Also, this book and the entire series is realistic fiction.

I thought this was a great book. I liked the ideas put in the story. I liked how Mr. Cray combined war, music, and video games into a real life experience. I also liked how realistic it was. I imagined what it would be like to save the world. For Alex, it's cool, and scary. He has many allies that adore him and rely on him to help the world, and he also has enemies who think he's doing a horrible job and want him to be murdered immediately.

In conclusion, Eagle Strike was a great book. The characters were cool and they showed the meaning of the book. I'd recommend it to middle school students or people of that age. Otherwise, many people can enjoy it. I enjoyed it, and you can, too.

The boy in the stories is 14 years old and my son relates to all the gagets he uses in the story. I highly recommend these books.

Could you imagine having a gun to your head and being on a plane with an assassin? Alex Rider has been. He is a spy that works for a group called M16 and was training with the S.A.S. Sabina is Alex's friend and when Alex is in trouble Sabina is there to help. Alex has been in a lot of situations with a gun to his head and he has always survives. The main maniac is Damian Cray. He said that he was trying to stop drug use was he ?.No he was trying to blow up half of the earth.
There also is a Russian man named Yassen Gregorovich. He helped Alex a lot of times escape even though he's a bad guy, he doesn't act like a bad guy. if he would save Alex's life I would consider him a good guy. Yassen told Alex that his dad was paid to kill people and how that he use to work with his father and how his father saved his life. Damian Cray is a man who likes to poison to kill people.
I would suggest this to people age 10 to 15 and people who like action and adventure thank you.

Anthony Horowitz does it again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You may be familiar with the story of Blackhawk Down. This is the incredible story of Michael Durant, whose helicopter was shot down over Somalia in 1993. With a broken back, compound fracture of his femur and other assorted injuries he was kept as a prisoner-of-war by warlord Mohammed Aidid. A fascinating story of thought and emotion of someone who lived it.

I really liked this tremendous book. Michael Durant, a NH boy living and working now (apparently) in Alabama, has written a book about, mainly, love for one's comrades.

I came away with greater respect for Ross Perot and less for the late David Hackworth. The former helps military men in ways that are commendable; the latter, for an inexplicable reason, attacked Mr. Durant in local letters to the editor in newspapers in Durant's hometown (Berlin, NH) and residence in Tenn.

I also read that Durant says the blow that broke his eyesocket came from a severed limb from one of his men. I also will never forget he checked out a book from the Lincoln, Maine, public library where Delta Force soldier Gary Gordon was born. That last person who had checked it out--twenty years earlier--had been the great Gary Gordon himself.

Gordon and Randy Shughart courageously insisted upon being dropped to defend the injured crew of the downed black hawk helicopter, even though they must have known they likely would be killed by the armed mob rushing toward the crash site.

Both received the Medal of Honor posthumously.

I also wish I could remember the name of the Oklahoma-born pilot who was killed in the other crash site in Mogadishu--made famous by Mark Bowden's Black Hawk Down--who would take midnight bike rides and show up at construction projects in just nylon shorts.

The end of the book is very good to help readers discover where happiness comes from: attitude. Michael Durant says that life is ten percent what happens to you and ninety percent how you react to it.

He needs to be on Dennis Prager's radio show on a Friday when Mr. Prager discusses happiness in his famous hour.

Thanks, Mr. Durant! We miss you in New Hampshire.

I love the photo of him holding his son on a boat in a lake that looks as though it is the one I swim in. I learn how perseverance and humility can make one great. Mr. Durant is a great man.

Stephanie Shughart also deserves special credit for an incredible letter Mr. Durant published (with permission) that enabled him to get over "survivor's guilt." What a gal! But for stupendous human being like Gordon and Shughart--and Durant--a great woman is necessary, too.

In The Company of Heroes, by Michael J. Durant, is the story of events that happened in Somalia and is also the setting for the movie Blackhawk Down. This book reveals much more detail than the movie did which was a definite plus. By having seen the movie, though, I was better able to picture the events of the book in my mind. Michael was in one of the helicopters that was shot down. He tells his story of the events that led up to shese copters being hit, and what took place after they crashed. Michel's story is one of the most amazing books that I have ever read. If you like suspensful, breath-holding books, then this book is definetly for you! I would give this book a 10 out of 10. I couldn't put the book down once I started reading it, which is very rare for me. For some good ole Southern humor and pure bellylaughs;you can't go wrong with Rick and Bubba.
Most people go through life and take everything serious and wonder why the others are having so much fun. It's all a matter of attitude, and no matter how bad things seem to be,it's people who look at life around them and see outrageous humor at every turn of events, that have the fun.
The book is a great read, but the CD that accompanys it is a real blast. These two guys just feed on one another ,and through highly developed senses of observation turn what most people just take for granted, into side-splitting humor.
We all go through the routines of Sunday morning,Fireworks,Arguments and happenings at Sports Events,Uptightness over Religion ,Hi-Jinks,and all the other events that make up our daily lives;but this pair ,seemingly without any effort, find humorin it all.
Many people think that the great comedy of the past is lost and gone forever. We may no longer have Abbott& Costello,Red Skelton,Gleason&Carney, and many others who gave us great comedy, and without foul and obscene language ,with us; but Rick& Bubba show that it can still be done and in a way that is enjoyable and totally acceptable to everyone.

That's the way to go

This book is really funny but the best chapters are the last three chapters where each of the men explain how their lives have changed since they received Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.

Excellent reading!!

I enjoyed reading this book very much before giving it to my 16 and 14 year old sons, who also enjoyed it very much. This book is very inspiring for anyone, not just young men.

I keep a running list of books I plan to buy as gifts and those i plan to read in my wish list. I selected this for my grandson'sbirthday and then decided to read it.Well i couldn't put the book down it was so compelling, down to earth, realistic and taught life lessons that help explain and solve problems that young people face every day. The book can be read out of sequence by topic if necessary. Each chapter takes a serious confrontation ie. the meaning of being cool, living with a single parent, the benefits of education etc. Harper shows respect for the culture young people live in and he speaks to them in their own language but he demonstrates how that can be a positive in their life and he shows them how. Harper's goal is to be a mentor to young people and I feel he achieves that and more because he unknownly explains to adults the concerns youngsters are experiencing. I send Xmas gifts to twenty-two relatives everyDreams from My Father: A Story of Race and InheritanceFrankie Manning: Ambassador of Lindy HopThe Autobiography of Malcolm XMalcolm X: The Man and His TimesThe Souls of Black FolkThe Pact year and each will receive this book as their next gift.

Very Inspirational

I purchased this book as a gift for my nephew. When I opened it to peruse the content, I was drawn to how open and honest Hill Harper is with his dialog. He isn't preaching to the reader, but he gently persuades and encourages the reader to aspire to be a better person, to want more, to give more. The book was not written to females, but there is a lot of wisdom that transpires gender. I decided to keep this one and purchase another one for my nephew.
