It really is a miracle. I was so nervous and worried. I didn't do all 10 steps. I just did the breakfast oatmeal thing and worked in extra bran, flaxseed, margarine and soy milk, and wha-la! I'm looking at a healthy ratio. I can't wait to see what happens 5 months from now. REALLY GREAT BOOK, good information, good ideas, good success stories, good all over! AND it works!!!

There are many books on lowering cholesterol. However, this is the best in my opinion. Clear and easy to follow. I don't religiously follow all the steps exactly, but I incorporate as many as possible into my program. These are healthy recommendations for everyone.

When my husband was diagnosed with high cholesterol, I wanted to help him
tackle the problem. This book gives 10 pretty doable recommendations for
how to lower cholesterol. They are the same suggestions that our
dietician gave him. Although, she also suggested fish oil supplements in
addition. The best part of the book is the detailed explanation as to
why all these suggestions work. The science behind why almonds, apples and oatmeal help pull cholesterol from your bloodstream really helped
my husband buy into making the changes. Good luck.

We are adopting from Ethiopia -- My wife read this book in less than a week. She said it was fantastic and thought our family and friends should read it to get an idea what we have to do for our adoption.

This book is an amazing look at what one individual can do to make a difference when the rest of the world isn't doing a whole lot. The history of the AIDS epidemic is enlightening. The story of this woman is amazing and the history of US drug companies failure to help and the government failure to step in initially is heartbreaking. The book is well written, wonderfully told and a captivating read.

Be prepared -- this book is why I'm adopting from Ethiopia!

A friend recommended this book as my husband and I were beginning the process of adopting. At the time, we were planning to do a traditional American adoption, but this book opened our eyes to the amazing people of Ethiopia and changed our hearts and minds. We were recently approved to adopt two children from Ethiopia. Be prepared -- you may come away from this book feeling the same way we did.

The subject of this book, Haregewoin Teferra, passed away recently, but this amazing story, so deftly told by Melissa Fay Greene, is her legacy, as are the children of Ethiopia.

I loved every moment of this book! I purchased this book to give me a better idea of the people and orphans of Ethiopia. I wanted to better understand their culture and have an understanding of who they are. The book illustrates how one Ethiopian woman builds a safe haven for orphaned children and shows the circumstances of each child brought to her home. It informs the reader about the aids epidemic and other diseases that have plagued this beautiful country. For anyone interested in adopting children from Ethiopia, it presents real-life stories and how adoption made a difference for them. The stories and photos are real and the author personally involved. I started to read it more slowly at the end so I wouldn't finish it, I loved it so much!

I'm writing this as the mother of an adopted Ethiopian child- I bought this book after a random search and it has been the most valuable book of our whole adoption journey. It's loaded with helpful background info on the AIDS & Orphan crises in Ethiopia, history of Ethiopia, insight into the cultural perceptions of adoption (especially by affluent, white Westerners!) and the very moving perspectives of the orphans themselves, and their Ethiopian caretakers. The heroine of this story is very real, and her character development was deep and insightful. I laid the book down several times to have a good laugh (or cry!) but could hardly keep from turning the pages. Whether you are adopting yourself, supporting someone who is, or just interested in learning more about Ethiopia and this heroine's story, I know you will come away inspired.

This is probably the definitive book on the prostate and prostate cancer. It has a 'quick read' format for each chapter, or a synopsis of the chapter, excellent drawings, and is just a keeper. I have not read it through yet, but I think the sole negative for some is that it does not give large discussion or a thorough up or down opinion on proton therapy. Any man beyond his mid sixties would do well to have this book.

This one is easy...if you or someone you care about has prostate cancer, you need this book. Well written and researched, Dr. Walsh lays out all of the information you need to make informed decisions at every stage of the process. A friend loaned me his 1st edition when I was diagnosed, I subsequently bought a copy for myself, I have since bought multiple copies of the 2nd edition so I can give to friends or aquaintances who may be diagnosed. Lots of new information is in the 2nd edition.

Breast Cancer Changes a Woman's Life

Book Review
March 12, 2009
Breast Cancer Changes a Woman's Life
Breast cancer has a way of changing a woman's life drastically. Waking up knowing that you have breast cancer and what the day holds for you can be so strenuous on a woman's life. What do we do and how do we cope with all the changes? I will tell you about how Dr. Lange in his book Be a Survivor "Your Guide to Breast Cancer Treatment" (Lange Publications, June 2007,180 pages) explains cancer and how to deal cope with the changes that will occur.
Vladimir Lange, M.D. in the book Be a Survivor "Your Guide to Breast Cancer Treatment" educates woman on different types of breast cancer and the treatment to cure. I thought that the book was very informative and easy to read being a cancer patient I found a lot of the information to be true and helpful. I really enjoyed the pictures and the remarks from the other cancer patients. If I had to recommend this book to anyone I would due to how it comforted me.
Dr. Lange is a graduate of Harvard Medical School. Dr. Lange's wife who is also a physician was diagnosed with breast cancer. "They both were overwhelmed by the complexity of the information they had to process." He states the book was inspired by their desire to make the journey easier for others. Be a Survivor should be the first book women reach for in developing strategies to fight perhaps the biggest battle of their lives. Bette-Lee Fox, "Library Journal" Renee Gaines had this to say about the book, "I recommend this book as a must to every person I know who is facing the challenges of breast cancer, breast surgery and finally for life after cancer."
Do you really know that cancer can be treated? Dr. Lange starts by discussing what breast cancer is and its treatment. He tells readers that breast cancer is not a death sentence that it is treatable and that a positive attitude is very important. The different stages and treatment are explained from the first step of what stage you are in to whether you should have lumpectomy or mastectomy radiation or chemotherapy or both to the hormonal therapy. Dr. Lange tells you how to deal with your emotional rollercoaster to how to deal with your partner, family, and your job and how to help them cope. Joan had this to say about receiving the diagnosis, "When you get that diagnosis, go ahead and cry your eyes out. Cry your eyes out right then, so that you're not bottling up that emotion. It's so terrifying, that for a while you feel as though you're in a fog, and that if you come out that fog, something terrible is going to happen. So, cry, vent, talk it out, and then find out what you can do to help yourself."
The book emphasize that cancer is a type of tumor that is malignant which spreads invading and destroying tissues, and that cells can part and get into other vessels and travel to other parts of the body. The way they determine if the cancer is malignant is by having a biopsy which is by testing a sample of the tumor. The testing is done by a pathologist. If it's malignant other test will be done to determine the stage and the best treatment for the patient. There are four stages used to determine the severity of the cancer.
Facing surgery can be scary and the book discusses surgery options and reconstruction and makes it more manageable. Dr. Lange tells the difference between mastectomy and lumpectomy. He explains that a lumpectomy is the removal of a tumor from part of the breast conserving as much breast tissue as possible. It may be done as an inpatient in the hospital or as an outpatient same day surgery. The procedure takes about an hour where an incision will be made over the tumor area and then the tumor will be removed. Recovering from a lumpectomy is almost immediately if there are were no lymph nodes removed. A lumpectomy would be recommended if there is only one tumor in the breast and it is not that big as the cosmetic results would not be satisfactory after removal. Laurel a cancer patient had this to say about her lumpectomy. "I had a lumpectomy with local anesthetic. It was extremely easy and when it was over physically I felt very good. I was able to go home with relatively little pain."
If the decision is for a mastectomy which is the removal of the whole breast and generally done in the hospital under general anesthesia. When you have a mastectomy the breast tissue, the nipple, the areola, and a number of axillary lymph nodes are removed but not the muscles. The procedure takes about two to three hours. The breast tissue will be removed and sent to the pathologist for any evidence that the cancer has spread beyond the breast. When the procedure is completed you will have one or two tubes called drains placed under you skin to help remove the fluid that accumulates after surgery. You will have to stay in the hospital for a day or two and then will continue to recover at home. Carol who had a mastectomy said this, "I have a very clear memory of the first time I took the bandages off. I literally went crazy. All of a sudden it was in my face. The breast wasn't there anymore. And it wouldn't ever be there."
If you decided that reconstruction is decision then, the breast can be reconstructed using implants, or the patient's own tissues. Reconstruction will not give you a normally functioning breast it can only create a beast form which, will have the shape and texture of your breast. It can be done immediately after surgery, or at a later date. Reconstruction can be done with synthetic implants or with your own tissues. The most common is the implants which are teardrop-shaped pouches that are inserted under the skin to create the form of a breast. The first couple of days you will experience some discomfort de to the breast are swollen and tender. When using your own tissues for reconstruction skin, muscle and fat is taken from another part of your body. This is called myocutaneous flap tissue transfer and there are different types of flaps the TRAM (Transverse Rectus Abdominis) Flap moves tissue from other area of the body to the breast area while preserving the original blood supply, and the free flap the original blood supply to the transferred tissue is cut and reconstructed. After Janet had her reconstruction she said "it didn't seem important at first, but finally have reconstruction did wonder for my confidence. Now when I look in the mirror, I don't cringe. When I change in the locker room I don't hide. In my own mind I am a woman again."
Don't fear radiation, people tend to make it worst then it is. Dr. Lange discusses radiation and the side effects of radiation. Radiation is local treatment that only treats the cancer area. It is a form of treatment that uses rays usually called X-rays and its main purpose is to destroy the ability of cells to grow and multiply, cancer cells are permanently damaged while other cells can recover quickly. The treatments usually last five to seven weeks. There are few side effects from the radiation which are fatigue, skin discoloration, breast swelling and some tenderness which all will subside after treatment.
Just hearing the words chemotherapy scares everyone but, Be a Survivor tells the reader about chemotherapy and its effects. Chemotherapy is a form of treatment that treats all parts of the body to kill cancer cells that may have spread; it may also be given to shrink the tumor before surgery. It is usually given by injections in the vein and the cycles are normally spread out over three to six months. Dr. Lange explains that the chemo affects both the normal cells and the cancer cells, but because the cancer cells divide quicker and are less likely to self-repair, they are more affected by the chemo. When normal tissues are affected you may experience several side effects such as nausea, fatigue, menopausal symptoms, and hair loss. The side effects with differ depending on the drug used for treatment. He explains that the patient might have sexual side effects both physical as will as psychological and encourages open communication with your partner or to seek counseling.
Is hormonal treatment and immunotherapy mandatory or an option? The book also tells difference between hormonal therapy and immunotherapy and that hormonal therapy prevents cancer cells from growing and immunotherapy helps the body to fight off cancer. Hormone therapy is usually given in the form of a pill and given over a period of five years and is taken daily. It has fewer and less severe side effects and you may affect the rate of loss of calcium from the bones. Hormone therapy is harmful to the fetus and you should use some type of birth control other than oral contraceptives because they may interfere with the treatment. When Pat started her hormone therapy she stated, "A low point was when I first started the hormone therapy, because I wasn't sure how my body would react to it, but I've had no side effects, so it's gone well." Immunotherapy is fairly new and relies on the body's own built-in defense system. It's given through injections and is focused on abnormal cells and the body's ability to fight off foreign particles. You may experience flu-like symptoms after the first injection and may need to have regular MUGA scans to checking the pumping in your heart to make sure the drug is not affecting it.
Be a Survivor talks about DCIS (ductal carcinoma in situ) a very early stage classified as non-invasive breast cancer Stage 0. It has not penetrated the lining of the duct and has not spread into the blood stream. With the use of mammograms now DCIS is easy to detect. In comparison to invasive cancer it has not been researched as extensively and physicians disagree on how to treat it. In the past doctors believed that if a patient had a mastectomy or lumpectomy it was 100% guaranteed not to come back. Now to make the decision easier, researchers devised a system for selecting the best treatment plan for each DCIS lesion. It is based on the size and grade of the tumor, and the width of the margin around the tumor.
Dr. Lange talks about different clinical trails that patients may be asked to participate in find in new ways to manage cancer and improve the quality of care. Trails are conducted according to protocol- a set of guidelines that tells what will be done and why. You don't have to participate in the trail you have a right to refuse. Mona a cancer patient was asked to participate in a research and she said this, "When I was asked to be on a research study, it was very carefully explained to me by my doctor and his nurse. I took a copy of the papers home, and as a matter of fact, sent one to a female physician of mine. We talked on the phone about it. I felt I would be carefully monitored. So I had no hesitation."
Finishing all your treatments and surgery can be such a relieve for you and your family, that Dr. Lange says that you still will experience a lot of the side effects like depression, anxiety, and fatigue. He recommends breast self examination, mammograms and even counseling to come to copes with the new you. Michelle said, "It has been about two years since my surgeries. I feel like a woman. And I don't just feel normal, I feel very attractive. I feel I have my sexuality back and I would be attracted to any man." When the treatment is concluded it is best to try to get back to your regular life as soon as possible. He recommends that you and your partner if needed counseling take up the offer.
Candace Moorman, MPH of the California Department of Health Services stated, "This is not just another book on breast cancer. I wish I'd had a reference like this when I was diagnosed."
Charlie opinion stated, "This book is unique in that it has testimonials throughout from women and their partners. It also has terrific drawings. I purchased a LOT of books when I was diagnosed. This was the book that I went to during my chemo and before surgery, to really find out what was going on. It is difficult to know what questions to ask your oncologist or surgeon, when everything is new. This book helps you prepare and should give you the confidence to make treatment decisions about your life.
After reading this book, I still would suggest this book to anybody battling breast cancer. I found it to explain things to me that I could understand and be a little more comfortable with.

I was introduced to this book at work and am now giving it to women newly diagnosed with breast cancer. I am on oncology certified nurse in the radiation oncology department of my cancer center. In January 2007 I also became our Breast Cancer Patient Navigator. I find this book gets excellent reviews from patients and their families alike. It is a great source of information, covering all the topics from diagnosis to living life 'after cancer'. I only wish I would have had this book when I was on my personal breast cancer journey! I highly recommend this book for someone newly diagnosed with breast cancer.

We give this book to surgeons in our area to distribute to women diagnosed with breast cancer. Before purchasing it, we had a group of 4 breast cancer survivors review and rate 3 separate books on breast cancer. This book "won" hands down, based on numerous criteria -- everything from its explanation of breast cancer treatments, to its index and glossary, to its discussion of life after cancer. It is clear and easy to read, provides comprehensive information on types of breast cancer and corresponding treatment alternatives, has wonderful graphics and photos, and provides interesting anecdotal stories of actual patients in its sidebar. Highly recommended!

I was diagnosed with diabetes about 2 years ago. I have read a number of books on the subject. What I like about this book is that it talks about real food. The dessert recipes are made with real sugar. They are low sugar of course, but a number of the recipes can be fed to company. The book also confirmed something I had recently noticed. If I eat less fat, I can eat more carbohydrates with less effect on my blood sugar. I believe this book would be a great place to start for the newly diagnosed, but it is also a great review book that includes a lot of the newest ideas and theories. In addition, it has the basic understanding that food is good and good food is even better.

I add my recommendation to the earlier one that you can save yourself lots of time and money by just buying this book. I recommend the hard-back version as your copy will get lots of use around the kitchen.
The explanations of the blood sugar problem and corrective methods are logical, simple and complete. The book is very well written and makes pleasant reading.
With the exception of two or three ingredients which you may have to find in a health food store, all others can be found in any grocery store.
All of the recipes thus far tried are simple and delicious.
The meal plans and recipes work without a pervasive feeling of constant hunger, which can be a problem in many other diabetic meal plans.
Following a diagnosis of pre-diabetic blood sugar level, and fortunately buying this book on a dietician's recommendation, along with half a dozen others which I rarely use, I have lost twenty pounds in the first three weeks of owning and using the book, with more coming off daily, with minimal exercise. Exercise naturally accelerates the weight loss.
A useful supplement is "No-fuss Diabetes Recipes for 1 or 2" by Boucher et al, but "The Other Diabetes" can stand alone.
The well known and documented relationship between obesity and diabetes 2 can be quickly attacked using this book.
One of the delicious breakfast recipes, Peach Almond Smoothie, will banish hunger for at least half a day, and is widely variable by substituting other frozen fruits for the peaches.
The recipes present lots of variety to accomodate different tastes.

This is one of the most practical and informative books I've found. It is easy to understand and has useful menus and recipes for the busy life of most people with diabetes or pre diabetes. I do not believe you will be disappointed with this book. Give it a read, you'll be glad you did.

My father has type II diabetes. I bought this book for him, but ended up reading it myself. I am not diabetic, but am at risk of developing it. This book is an interesting read, and has a wondeful meal plan and recipes. I have decided to start eating the way she describes, The Mediterranean way, just because it's a healthy way to live. It's just a bonus for me that it also helps prevent and control "the other diabetes". Get this book....it's fantastic!

An excellent source for the person with MS. I haven't been able to find a diet yet that was condensed into a few pages like this one. It's such a jewel for me to have obtained. Just remember: Anything WORTH doing is never easy but so rewarding!

I was diagnosed finally about 5 years ago. Since then I have read everythinng, including two or three cookbooks and several full length books on MS.

I found Ann Sawyer's book to be accurate, up to the minute, and supremely hopeful. And the diet is specific enough to try at once. I am deeply grateful to the authors and all those who shared their experience and hope. I will be healthier in mind, body and spirit for the companionship in this book.

The authors have something helpful to share, and its a gift to MS readers. They have MS themselves, and describe their personal journeys of disease disability, then discovery and recovery, using dietary modifications. They inform us that the medical establishment currently falls short. There's no money in dietary research. At least for some, there is new hope of recovery. I recommend this book anyone with MS who has the ability, will power really, to make some dietary changes. Then, if improvement results, educate the neurologists about this book.

Phenomenal book. Gives direction and a lot of hope dealing with a disease where there is not a lot of hope given (especially by physicians). Enjoyed the personal stories, the recipes, opinions of the authors. Would highly recommend this book to those interested in getting well.

The Art of Getting Well: Maximizing Health and Well-being When You Have a Chronic Illness

I was excited when I saw the strong customer reviews for Ann Sawyer's book, but disappointed to actually read it. (Judith Bachrach is also listed as author, but it seems to come mostly from Sawyer.) Her claim is that finding the right diet can resolve nearly all MS symptoms, but she doesn't tell you how to do it. It's not really a diet; it's an approach to figuring out your own healthy diet. This is a good idea; I just don't think it will work for many people in this form.

Could be I'm a bit jealous. I've had MS for 30 years, and it's kicking my butt pretty good right now. My first book, The Art of Getting Well, is largely based on my experiences with MS (along with interviews with 30 other people with chronic illness.) My book has never sold in anything like the numbers that MS Recovery Diet is selling. But I think I'm being objective - I'm still looking for help, too.

The basic dietary advice is given in a few pages. You have to consider stopping any or all of the following: dairy products, grains that contain gluten, eggs, legumes (beans) and yeast, in that order of probability. But that might not do it, so you need to test yourself for food allergies, either through blood tests or an elimination diet.

Well, I've done all those things and seen very little difference. Sawyer and Bachrach say you can determine what foods to avoid by closely monitoring yourself after eating. If a food makes you feel bad, get rid of it. The problem is that, for me and for many people with MS, the worse symptoms might not come on for two or three days after eating (or being exposed to cold, or getting stressed, or whatever the problem is.) So it's very hard to tell which food, if any, is causing problems.

There's a lot of scientific language in this book, but I would class much of it as pseudo-science. For example, they talk about allergenic food damaging the blood-brain barrier, but give no idea how that could happen or any studies to back it up.

The book is filled out with many chapters on what MS is, the history of MS, the history of medical treatments and dietary approaches, success stories of people who have used their approach, and lots of recipes. The success stories mostly fall within the range of the natural variation of MS. The recipes might actually be useful to someone who wants to try this approach.

I support people trying dietary approaches for their MS. I agree with the authors that the medications don't work well, and that many other things (diet, Vitamin D, digestive enzymes, Chinese medicine to name a few) can help. But be careful! When you've got advanced MS, you have fewer sources of pleasure in your life. Making yourself crazy about food and depriving yourself of things that give you pleasure is not likely to help.

I recently was told by my doctor that I need to lower my total cholesterol. This came as a bit of a surprise as I didn't know I had a problem and I am still fairly young. I bought this though and the information and recipes are wonderful. I find that I enjoy looking through, finding recipes that I like and using the ingredients I enjoy that are good for me that she tells you all about in the beginning of the book.

A friend gave me this book and it is just fabulous. The receipes are wonderful - love the Tandoori Chicken and Cilantro Broiled Chicken Breasts, Flourless Choc. Cake, Rich Tomato Soup and Beef Tenderloin with Port Cranberry Sauce, ---BUT--- it is the precise, clear, beautifully written and presented discussion of the 40 heart healthy foods that brings me to open this book several times a week. It is just such a valuable source of nutritional information. This book is not just for those who have heart disease (I, thank goodness, do not), but for every person who is alive in the 21st century and trying to eat a healthy diet.

This book provides extremely useful scientific based knowledge regarding general health and specifically skin health as it relates to nutrition. Many references are provided and no "too good to be true" gimmicks are thrown at you. Very refreshing in a time where many books are linked to a money grab of some sort, or false information. I am not completely done the book yet but have already gained much useful information.

From a woman who has had adult acne for over 30 years...bravo! This book contains the remedy...and it's in our hands as they go from our plates to our mouths!

I tried everything to cure this pesky ailment, except accutane. I had always noticed dietary influences, but everytime I tried to talk with a doctor about diet and nutrition they acted like I was insane. This book provides the real deal truth and science about all the influences that create this dibilitating condition.

Since applying the information in this book, my condition has been reduced by 95%...this is manageable! Many thanks to the authors!

People who suffer from adult acne should buy this book!

I'm in my late 20s and have tried so many beauty products with no success. I always thought my acne was caused by stress but now I realize it was also my poor diet. I've been taking the vitamins and eating the foods recommended by the authors for a couple of weeks and I can definetely see the improvement in my skin.

Wow! This book throws a lot of data, facts, and clinical trials at you. Some may say it is disorganized. However the feeling I had coming out of reading the book was an unwavering faith in how diet is related to Acne that I previously only suspected. And with that - a new-found conversion, no-TOTAL COMMITMENT to change myself 180 degrees and to beat the pharma and cosmetic industry that feeds off this illness. A strong commitment needs a strong conversion as the seed and this book is the catalyst. Wish I found this sooner. 5 Stars and bravo!

I've never written a review, but I feel I must because this book was amazing! I'm a 29 yr old woman who's always had acne but it was getting worse, esp around that time of the month. I've tried every product and nothing worked except for birth control, so I knew it was hormonal. I decided to try natural holistic path. So I started accupuncture for hormones and bought this book. Coincidentally my accupuncturist gave me many of the same food recommendations in this book, cut sugar and dairy, limit carbs and red meat. Focus on fiber, whole grains, fish, healthy oils and lean meat. I always believed what you eat doesn't affect acne, but IT DOES! After 3 months I noticed a big improvement in my skin and I believe it was the acupuncture AND diet. Now 6mo. later I'm the clearest I've been in a long time. I've cut down on acupuncture and am hoping to wean off completely. I am sticking to the diet though because it works. It goes into depth on how everything you eat can affect your acne. And the information backed up by proven studies. It's gets scientific, but it's broken down so you can understand. It's honestly one of the most powerful books I've read.
