I own many many books, fiction, non-fiction and technical. This book is a really impressive work of art.
The text is well written. The complex topics are clearly explained. The diagrams and drawings are just plain gorgeous. Kraig Mitzner has set a standard for technical books to come.
You only have to look here at Amazon at the first few pages to see what I mean. Try pg. 4
If you are an Electronics Engineer or PCB designer and you do not own this book, then you are not as smart as you think you are.

Best technical book I have ever read.

This book is very well organized. I found it extremely informative. Starts with the history of PC board processes and modern techniques, design and limitation. It guides you through several examples of PC board design and schematic design also. It shows you how to use AutoCad to generate Gerber and Excellon files for PC board House production.

The floppy included with the book contains example files that are used in the book. The floppy also contains utilities and librarys of symbols and parts.

This is a great book. It leaves nothing out. You will find everything here.

I really did not know much about how to use AutoCad, but by reading and working the examples, I learned how professionals use AutoCad.

Many technical books leave out key points and jump from subject to subject. Some even change terminology slightly and leave you wondering. Not this one. This book is a precise work.

Its clear, that the author is an expert in this field. WHAT A GREAT, LEARNING EXPERIENCE.

An easy read and great resource for an EE

This book explained EMI control and design for EMC in a clear manor. I had only one complaint, there are a lot of graphs that appear to have been in color originally. The book is not printed in color, so it is difficult to distinguish data traces on these graphs. I would still highly recommend this book!

"PCB Design for Real-World EMI Control" is a great book on techniques to reduce EMI problems in your designs. The book has a good layout with each chapter building on the last. Techniques are discussed in detail with very little math. Overall, the book is easy to follow for the beginning designer and a good reference for the experienced designer. I recommend this book to anyone involved in PCB design.

Electronic products, or more broadly any product with electronic parts, need to reduce their EM interference to some minimum amount. Where this depends on the type of product and the country in which it will be sold. A problem is that in university electrical engineering courses, controlling EMI is typically only briefly taught.

In contrast, this book gives detailed prescriptions on how to lay out your printed circuit board elements, to minimise EMI. Vital subjects like understanding the role of a ground plane and how to incorporate it into your PCB are covered.

All the book's material should be understandable to anyone with an undergrad background in engineering or physics.

Ritchey's book (and the second edition) is worth every penny to a high-speed digital board designer. The practical knowledge is invaluable, and compliments the theory that other authors cover in their books.

A good look at the way OrCAD accomplishes design tasks, and how to make it do what you want. Covers some good in depth info on the actual process for making a quality design.

It is good the book is printed on good quality stock because it will get used and thumbed thru for a long time.

Very Good book for Layout

If you have some to little experience with layout then this is definitely a good book. If you're an expert then this not the book for you. It brings up design issues that most would not think about unless you've had a class on EMC and PCB design. It also provides some practical examples which are also a useful reference for creating a successful PCB fast. This not a substitute for OrCAD's documentation but it condenses it down into something manageable and points you to sections in the documentation when useful, saving time.

This book allowed me to understand Orcad will enough to successfully layout a PCB from scratch. I do have an electronics background but had no prior PCB layout experience. For less than $60.00 I consider this book a bargain. The flow and layout of the book is outstanding. The book starts with a simple layout to ensure you have the basics down and progressively builds from that point. After gaining the required knowledge from reading the book and completing the examples, you will want to have this book around as a reference material for future layouts. The book touches on many of most common and advanced features of Orcad schematic capture and PCB layout. Keep in mind that the book only briefly mentions PSpice with a few simple examples. If you are looking for PSpice as well as Orcad layout, you should look for a good companion book to supplement this good Orcad book.

Five stars, but...

Let me start by saying that the book is really good. I mean the level of detail here is just amazing. No matter which software you are using (Mentor, Eagle, Cadence) you will get a lot out of this book.

However, I did not give it 5 stars because of the following issues. I will list them and you can make up your own mind.

1. As another reviewer mentioned, "OrCad Layout" will no longer be supported. Cadence is moving toward PCB Editor for future products. This makes the book somewhat obsolete. However, for those who use OrCad < V16.0 this is perfectly fine. Also, if you read the book for the OrCad capture discussion, this is perfectly ok. Cadence uses Capture in all future versions. I can't blame the author for this. Many users are up in arms over it (just check the discussion boards).

2. This book is heavily oriented towards manual layout. SPECCTRA is mentioned in a very small section towards the end. This is a major omission. I mean OrCad includes one of the most powerful shape based autorouters and this is an afterthought in the book? Come on. Ever try to layout a board with 20-30 IC's (6-8 layers) by hand? Maybe if you're crazy. BIG thumbs down!

The book includes a student version of the software and I guess the author tried to make the book fit the capabilities of that (which is very limited). I question the wisdom behind this. I mean, dude, we have the grownup software already. We're past the "hand holding" stage and in the war. Help us out with all the bells and whistles.

Ok, I don't mind the intro stuff. I read through it because I might pick up something. But I need the advanced view as well. I need the "get down and dirty" stuff and I need lots of it.

I would like to see the author come out with a new book: "Complete PCB design Using Allegro Professional Products (OrCad Capture, PCB Editor, SPECCTRA and PSPICE A/D". He is a good writer. I know he can do it.

I, for one, would gladly pay double.

The book would probably grow to double the size as well. Here is a suggestion: I get most of my books as eBooks these days (Adobe digital editions). This is the kind of book that would really work in that format.

Please?

I'm done, tnx

Just like Alex, after I got the copy of the first volume, the clean and professional looking content of this book prompted me to buy the other volumes of the same title. Now, I have to go to my basement shop and start working on the tv modulator circuit.I am planning to build a complete home brewed closed circuit tv for surveillance purposes. Yeee haaaa!

My son got an "A" in a school project

I bought this book for my son as he asked me to help him with a school science project. He was very excited upon receiving the copy and started building the audio amplifier circuit right away. After some trial and errors (he did wire lines wrongly), he finally made it working. You can never imagine how happy he was. The cream of it is that his teacher gave him an "A" for the project. I am very proud of him. He told me he wanted to become an electronic engineer someday.

I give this book five stars for being a great help to my son.

If you don't know how to etch a pcb board, nor drill a hole in a pcb, nor transfer a pcb pattern to the copper side of pcb, don't jump to buy this book. These basic skills are not discussed in this book. Go and buy other books that teach these skills.

If you know the basic skills though, you can buy this book. It can add to your collection of circuits.

Unfortunately, the book is now obsolete. The software is now known as Orcad Capture, version 9.2, and Orcad Layout, version 9.2, there are little similarities between the current software and the processes described in the book.
