What an impressive book - you get 400+ pages of ways to make life more comfortable for someone with Alzheimers. These also help the caregiver in a variety of situations.
The advice covers things like how to deal with wandering and gives four types of this behavior. It tells how to eliminate places to hide and rummage, coping with fears (of bathing, of strangers, of abandonment), and managing incontinence.
The book helps with mobility issues, addresses safety and how to manage daily living. It includes a valuable section (38 pages) lists where to find special products from stair lifts to bathing aids to ramps to bedwetting alarms.
I'm so glad to see a book this comprehensive to assist with Alzheimer's needs.

Much more than a how to book...

Mark Warner's book on Alzheimer's proofing your home is more than a how to book. Mr. Warner gives an in-depth description of the ways in which Alzheimer's disease affects a person's life, and the life of the extended family. By understanding the disease in depth and the changes that take place in a person physical and emotional need, there is a context to understanding why modifications and alterations are needed. He explains what to do and why to do it. His approach is that of a loving caregiver who not only wants to make the home safe and secure, but also wants to raise the quality of life. . Modifications are practical, but also designed to bring comfort. Even after over two decades of working professionally with people with memory loss, many of his suggestions caught me by surprise. I kept saying to myself, "why didn't I think of that?" He addresses all the behaviors associated with the disease, from wandering to agitation, and suggests environment solutions that could ease the situation. Not only will this bring a higher level of comfort to the person with the disease, but many of the suggestions are a benefit for anyone who wishes to have a safe and barrier free home. I recommend this book to anyone caring for someone with Alzheimer's, anyone involved in home care, and anyone who is interested in altering environments to meet specific needs of unique individuals. Like any thoughtful book, his ideas about adapting environments to the needs of people with Alzheimer's disease also stretches one's thinking about changing environments for anyone with specific needs, or who wants to think about the highest level of safety for family members.

"...Alzheimer's Proofing Your Home" is the most complete, most helpful, and most insightful volume I have read on the subject of AD care. With incredible attention to detail, every issue one could encounter is addressed individually. It isn't enough to have a how-to-do-it manual with AD - Mark confronts matters like behavior, wandering, mobility, safety and comfort with deep sensitivity and compassion. A rich, in-depth source of information, Mark explains in detail how to transform any home into a safe haven in a manner that the patient will find warm and welcoming. Cognitive, spatial, and emotional deficits can be compensated for using Mark's well thought out guidelines, and I wish his book had been around when I began caregiving many years ago. There are many books on the subject, all filling a need; but Mark's is far and away superior to anything I've read, which is considerable. Hundreds of situations and their remedies are explored. Concerns encountered as AD progresses are addressed one by one, with a wealth of hints, tips, and shortcuts that are the lifesaver of harried caregivers. Easy to accomplish safety and comfort measures are provided - how needed! Emphasis is placed on concerns all CGs share - how to keep loved ones protected and content, AD being the antithesis of both. Mark has given us an instructional book, made warm and personal because it's about individuals and their needs. There is a comprehensive listing of product and service providers for caregivers, and most of the numbers are toll free. The title of this book does not begin to do it justice, it's so much more. Plus, it's very attractively bound - a beautiful volume of superior quality. Among my treasured books on the subject of dementia caregiving, this is my bible. ..........Sue B.

This book is a must for caregivers and professionals facing the challenges of Alzheimer's. It is the first book I've read devoted to Alzheimer's care that offers something more than reasons to institutionalize our people. Caregivers need information, options and where to access tools and resources before they can make informed decisions about their choices or their role as caregiver. As someone who spent 25 years designing rehabilitations plans for handicapped people and another 10 years facing the care of my husband, Tom, who died of this disease in our home, this is the first volume I've picked up that speaks of caregiving in positive, life-giving, do-able terms and not the drudgery that we are all led to believe consumes the process. While it offers pragmatic, workable, affordable solutions to caregivers, it never loses sight of the continued humanity and needs of our family members for love and regard in spite of their loss of cognitive skills. My experience as a caregiver was met with nothing but obsticles in my quest to keep my husband home, a journey I relate in my book, "He Used to be Somebody." I found Tom's care problems were 75% attitude and 25% tools, resources and help. This book offers both to families. I highly recommend it.

A very good book for all healthcare professionals.
I used to use my PDA as an address book and appointments manager.
Reading this book made my usage of my PDA essential to the extent that now I can't afford to round in the hospital without that small machine in my pocket.
I liked very much chapter 10 " Carrying the web wiyh you "

A better title for this book would be, "Handheld Computers for Medical Professionals". Nurses, Respiratory Therapists, Physical Therapists, Clinical Pharmacists and anyone else in the clinical environment would benefit from the ideas presented in Dr. Al-Ubaydli's book.
Best of all, he gives web addresses for software information that can be modified for any specialty. If you're interested in increasing your productivity in the clinic either as a student or full fledged professional, this is the book to start with.

Written with hospitals and doctors in mind, there is still a wealth of information for those who just want to get to know their handheld better. It covers both Palm and Windows operating systems. Mo Ubaydli is a handheld guru and his enthusiasm for these wonderful machines shines through. Even better is that it is also a very easy book to read. Thoroughly recommended and a great resource, well written with several examples of how to make the most of these little marvels!

Most hunters and shooters have a dismal understanding of optics. For evidence, go to a shooting range or hunting camp and pay attention -- you'll see such absurdities as guys with $2K rifles toting $30.00 K-Mart binoculars, guys with short-ranged 30-30s topped with gigantic 4-14x scopes, and guys with European optics that cost more than a well-used car who can't hunt or shoot well enough to remotely take advantage of their gear. This book is the antidote to such maladies.

John Barsness is one of the two best currently active hunting/gun writers. (The other is Craig Boddington.) In this book, the best of its kind that I'm aware of, Barsness has done something incredible -- made a treatise on optics (which could easily have become a dry morass of technical info and jargon) that's also an enjoyable read.

Barsness does an excellent job of informing the curious hunter about all aspects of hunting optics -- gun scopes, binoculars, spotting scopes, and even rangefinders. He tells you what attributes to look for and why. He also dispels a lot of the myths about hunting optics (eg., that bigger is always better, that optical brightness is the single most important attribute of a riflescope, that ultra-expensive, hard-to pronounce Euro-scopes are the greatest thing since smokeless powder, etc.) Barsness, to his credit, looks not only at the Rolls Royce-level optics that few real-life hunters can afford; he also looks at middle-class and even proletarian products, and points out that many of them are better than you'd expect (just like expensive optics can sometimes be lemons.)

This is a book that I've referred back to again and again, and have found extremely helpful when shopping for scopes, binoculars, and spotting scopes of my own. I highly recommend it to any hunter.

Very Practical Study of Hunting Optics

In spite of being a little dated this study of optic basics is extremely useful. After reading this book I understood more about optics and their performance than I could have hoped. Barsness has a logical style that begins in basics, describes how American optics differ from European, and how to compare to get best value for dollar (high price doesn't neccessarily mean best). He also writes an enlightening segment on how to use binocular, rifle scope, and spotting scope as a system becoming more aware of all that goes on just beyond our sight. This was an entertaining book to read and a pleasure to learn from.

Finally!

I found Optics for the Hunter to be educational. I learned several bits of information that helped me feel like I was making an educated decision in purchasing both a binocular and rifle scope. It does not really help you choose between the various products within a mfg line (like between the various Leupold models) you'll have to figure that out for your self.

It does provide valuable info on mounting scopes as well. I am glad I bought it.

The only complaint I might have with this book is the format, it's a big book, and given how often I need it, a smaller handbook (like the CRC handbook) would be more convenient. But then that might hurt the readability.

The book itself however is awesome, comprehensive, readable, plenty of illustrations, minimum of jargon, and useful for engineers and scientists.

The book holds nearly 500 pages and the text is supported by plenty of usefull illustrations and tables. It covers pacing therapy and the indications for internal defibrillators. Although the space is limited you will find a good discussion of details such as venous access and the various causes of cardiac syncope. The text often gives a historic perspective on the use of leads and generators and it is generally well written. It can be recommended for the clinical cardiologist who is not specially trained in electrophysiology but who needs a better understanding of modern pacing therapy. It is allways a problem to by books on a subject that changes so very fast. But if you need a survey this is the best way to do it. This book deserves to be read accordingly. It is a very nice book.

Deserving of ongoing mention and recommendation is the second revised, updated edition of a fine handbook for either mobile or club DJs. THE DJ HANDBOOK surveys the entire art of the DJ business, from music selection and mixing to fostering DJ contacts, troubleshooting audio problems, and understanding equipment. While the equipment is the major focus of THE DJ HANDBOOK, it's also notable for its background details on the industry and experience as a whole.

Are you a DJ? If you are, then this book is for you! Author Charles Slaney, has done an outstanding job of writing a second edition of a book that is an essential read for every DJ.

Torres, begins by providing you with an introduction to Mixing and how its done; as well as, an explanation about the mechanical process and the musical or performance side, that is essential to modern DJing. Then, the author covers some specifics that may assist you, assuming of course that you want to get paid for what you do and that you want to get work in the first place. Next, he concentrates on the types and some makes of equipment you'll encounter. The author then covers sound basics in greater depth and what you need to know bout the technical aspects of the controls you'll operate. He continues by taking a quick look at the mix, the different types of mix and the way to achieve them. Then, the author takes a quick look at some things that might help the mobile DJ. Next, he makes you aware of the potential hazards of being a DJ: health and safety, etc. The author then discusses career progression. He continues by explaining the art of Djing: Knowing exactly what to play and when. Next, he covers the real life account of a real DJ: James Camm. The author then discusses copyright and licensing. He continues by covering various DJ products. Finally, he introduces you to a list of sites that he has visited in the course of his own activities and in researching this book.

In this most excellent book, you'll find advice in choosing equipment; as well as, setting it all up and getting the best sound out of it--whatever the venue. More importantly, don't forget that there's more to being a successful DJ than just playing records.

From Chas S. Clifton's May 10, 2008, nature blog review:

You Say Binocular...

I say binoculars, but Tom McIntyre's The Field & Stream Hunting Optics Handbook actually covers shooting glasses, rifle and telescopes, binoculars, and rangefinders. And flashlights.

The Hunting Optics Handbook is moderately technical. You need to know some formulas to compare the "twilight factor" of two different spotting scopes you are comparing, for example -- how well they work under low-light conditions.

But along with the useful, contemporary information, McIntyre packs in a lot of history (of lenses, iron rifle sights, and marksmanship), and that history makes this book something more than a technical treatise.

He suggests, for instance, that General Custer's bad day on the Little Bighorn in June 1876 might have been partially due to his "low-powered, undoubtedly high-dispersion-lens field glasses."

Since serious purchases of spotting scopes, etc., can run well into three figures--or more--doesn't it make sense to spend $15 and a few hours educating yourself first? And then keep The Field & Stream Hunting Optics Handbook on the bookshelf the pleasure of reading about a medieval pope's eyeglasses or Hiram Berdan's sharpshooters.

A good book to have to help sportsmen in understanding what they should be using, how it works and why quality is indelibly written into reliablity of sporting optics. I'll bet the author is both a hunter and an Opthalmologist or OD which favors the reader in technical correctness and pracitcal field use of riflescopes, spotting scopes, and binoculars. There is excellent info here for expert and beginner. Glad I bought this little book.

In a niche market, this book is overwhelmingly effective

Review Date: 2008-07-15
As I read this book, my interest was maintained, but I experienced a regular curiosity regarding the market for it. As a computer scientist, the subject of how calculators carry out the computations and how they are programmed is of interest to me. However, the niche for this material must be rather small. It is too advanced for a basic course in calculator math and there is not enough material for a numerical methods style course. Therefore, my conclusion was that the target market is the nerd who loves to understand how their gadget works.
Restricted to that arena, this book is overwhelmingly effective. You learn how to carry out sophisticated programming of the TI-83 and TI-84 calculators. Advanced mathematical computations such as the log and trig functions are demonstrated via background explanations and programs. In general, the author makes few assumptions regarding the level of mathematical expertise of the readership. For example, there is an extensive description of the complex numbers before they are used in a program.
People who want to know how things work will enjoy this book, but those who just want to work with things most likely will not.

When Professor Rising shared preliminary versions of this text with me, I urged him to make it available for wider use. I am delighted that Wiley is publishing his book as I believe that it is a unique and quite remarkable approach to teaching calculator use, programming essentials and pre-calculus mathematics.
