I recently ordered The Deep by Claire Nouvian. I love the book. Sometimes there is more than 1 picture of the subject from a different view point. They look a lot like fantasy creatures not anything like other sea creatures I've seen in other books. The pictures are large and full of definition. Well worth the money.

Hello,
I just wanted to congratulate everyone who worked for this book to appear, that tells us, readers, about one of the most interesting aspects in our very own universe. It is a world that makes me, still a young guy, imagine. How would it be like if I could go on a submarine down the ocean, where light can no longer penetrate, but where we can find unbelievable creatures, that remind me of the scientific movies?! Well, it is a dream that I wont probably experience, but anyway this book takes me to a different world, and gives me an impression of a paradise, in spite of the dangerous species that inhabit this strange world, and that is why I am so proud of having the book in my hands.
Because I was so interested in the deep sea, I try searching all kind of webpages, but unfortanetely I had no success in finding them, because there are only a few of them. The webpage I found that I liked the most is called seasky.org, and with the information I had from it, I prepared a presentation for my classmates, but the problem was that I only had three minutes to talk about a theme that requires much more time. It turned out to be a fantastic presentation and my teacher gave me a 20 (best grade) for it, so I am not only thanking everybody who worked for this book and the webpages for making me more informed, but also I am thanking you all for making it possible to have such a good grade in my english presentation! Hope you all continue doing such a great work like you are doing now

If this book doesn't rate a 5 out of 5, I don't know what else will.

This book if full of stunning photographs and images. Page after page, they show how alien the deep sea is, and how incredibly life on earth can diverge. Page after page, I thought I was in trance, looking at alien life forms from another planet.

The text are also excellent as introductory material to all who are curioius about the deep sea. It categorises most of the important concept areas of the deep see ecology well.

I bought the book because I wanted to see the incredible creatures. The book easily achieved this with the superb images. Also, to my surprise, I also learnt about how destructive we human are.

If you want your kids (or anyone else) to be seduced by nature, and raise their conciousness about the fragile natural environment around us - this book is for you.

In todays day and age of Steve Erwin and Jeff Corbin who go around hunting for animals, it is easy to forget where it all started. With people like Gerald, and the London zoo. In this book, he collects animals, deals with his demented siblings and his long suffering mother who has to raise four kids and fend off the advances of a really persistent Colonel who gets increasingly vulgar and `grabby' when he drinks. This is a rare story that combines a humorous story with humorous writing and I once caused passengers in a flight to turn around and give me strange looks, so hard was I laughing.

Skeleton of a Plot embellished with tonnes of vocab

My Family and Other Animals is a bare-bones story in terms of plot. The Durrell family goes to Corfu, lives through what could be termed as a soap opera, and leaves. It's humourous, but not particularly challenging.

However, the older Gerald Durrell utilises vivid vocabulary over and over when describing the setting and people of Corfu. Fifteen-letter words that paint a crystalline picture are used frequently, relieving the never-ending roller coaster that is the life of the Durrells.

Overall, this is a highly entertaining book that will keep you engaged for the week or so that you will spend reading it every spare second you have.

Gerald Durrell was not only a naturalist and a gifted writer about his beloved animals, but a loving brother and son whose descriptions of his family and their foibles will keep you laughing all the way through. This is one of those books which I've reread so many times I've lost count, and which I've given to many friends who needed cheering up. Always works, too!

I wish I could give it 6 stars!

This book is absolutely, brilliantly funny. The wit and unique characterizations are woven with great descriptions of the animals and plants of Corfu. That Durrell can hold the attention of readers who have no interest in biology simply demonstrates what a fine work this is. Gerald's depiction of a larger-than-life expatriate family on a larger-than-life Greek island is a tremendous celebration of life. The variety of different Greek characters parading through this book rivals the variety of Corfu's flora and fauna. Absolute great read!

The Relaxation & Stress Reduction Workbook

Review Date: 2009-06-16
Excellent resource for learning stress management and relaxation strategies.

The Good: Each chapter is dedicated to a specific topic, such as re-breathing training, refuting irrational ideas and meditation, and the authors do an excellent job providing some background information (e.g., the role of stress in daily life, the fight-flight response, pictures of the diaphragm and information regarding normal vs. shallow breathing). Text is written in very easy-to-understand language and the strategies are easy to learn and apply in a variety of situations. Yet like any skills the strategies require practice, time, and patience to begin to have an effect on your life.

What Needs To Be Improved: Whilst the book provides numerous strategies to combat stress and to encourage relaxation, there is no information regarding what someone should do if the strategies don't work. Also, the book tends to focus primarily on breathing-based exercise with the assumption that a person can simply sit down and "get it" at the expense of other proven stress-reduction strategies, such as distress tolerance or mindfulness-based strategies. Furthermore, given that readers need to follow a script for most of the breathing exercises, a companion CD containing the script would have been helpful as trying to follow the instructions whilst doing the exercise is not effective.

I would recommend this book for anyone who wants to learn ways to manage everyday stress. I would not recommend this book as the sole resource for anyone who experiences emotional issues that are "deeper" than everyday stress as unfortunately the strategies in this book may not be as effective if used alone and such individuals should instead seek help from a psychologist. I would also recommend this book to students or other professionals interested in learning some introductory information about relaxation strategies.

The Relaxation & Stress Reduction Workbook by Martha Davis , Elizabeth Robbins Eshelman, Matthew McKay and Patrick Fanning is a book that will help you overcome anxiety and encourage physical and emotional well-being. The book takes a good long look at stress and how you can learn to manage it. You will master breathing, relaxation and meditation techniques with the help of this book. The book also includes chapters on job stress management, objective setting and time organization, and assertiveness training. You will also learn other stress reduction methods including hypnosis and meditation to biofeedback and assertiveness exercises.

After you read this book it may be a good time to consider reading my book entitled "The Enlightenment, What God Told Me After One Million Prayers, a Message for Everyone" (See Profile Above) There are lots of way to handle life's many problems.

A Nice Collection of Techniques

Review Date: 2009-03-13
I purchased this book, not realizing that it was the same book (just a newer version) that a therapist had once given me for a weekend. It's a nice collection of stress and anxiety management techniques. I particularly like how the book emphasizes the fact that you should only do what works best for you and recommends you pick and choose those elements throughout the book, rather than necessarily reading the whole thing.

The first two chapters of the book are necessary for understanding basic stressors and their effects on your life. I thought the book did a nice job of summarizing recent understanding concerning stress and anxiety, as well as the importance of relaxation on physical and emotional health. By the end of the first two chapters, depending on how you've answered some of the questions in them, you are directed to specific chapters throughout the book that are most likely to benefit you.

I haven't had enough time to sit down and try many of the techniques within, but it is clear that the book gives a whole range of relaxation styles and worksheets to help one accomplish the techniques. About the only thing I wish was different in the book is some of the recommended further reading lists. Given today's world of new media/Internet resources, more of the further reading materials should be available online, at least in some fashion. Along the same lines, I think the book fails to recommend online support groups, which can be very valuable to users.

All in all, a great book and (from what I remember of the old version) filled with good updates. But, as with many self-help and textbooks, I am somewhat left with the wish that online options were at least mentioned/mentioned more.

Beautiful Tale of a Young Girl

Review Date: 2009-06-17
This book told a beautiful story of a young girl who experienced a personal tragedy, but at the same time, learned life lessons from some very special people and even from the whales her father studied.

Within a native culture setting in Canada, young Sarah moved there with her mom and dad, away from everything she knew. After they arrived at their new home, her father (a marine biologist) began his new job and shared his excitement with his wife and daughter Sarah. His study of killer whales would turn out to be more significant to his daughter than any of them knew.

Sarah met a new young friend, Goldie, and her very spiritual, mystical grandmother, Nana, who showed Sarah the ways of her people and taught her a different way of thinking.

Sarah experienced a difficult time adapting to a new school with mostly Indian children. But nothing could compare with what Sarah experienced later, when her whole world came crashing down around her.

Although the book was a very easy read, I could not put it down. The text flowed perfectly and the story was very beautiful. A great story for young or old.

This novel has so much to offer--well-developed characters, a moving story, Native American mythology (I'm one-eighth Cherokee myself and love reading about it), marine biology (another area of personal interest). Whales, manatees, I'm a big fan of all creatures. I'll reluctantly admit I wasn't sure at first that WHALE SONG would be my cup of tea--I thought it was "just" a YA novel. How wrong I was! I would recommend this book to anyone of any age. I could say more, but it seems the reviewers who have already posted have beaten me to it. Let me add that I'll be reading anything this author publishes from now on.

This book would make a wonderful movie.

I made the mistake of recommending this novel for my book group based on the terrific reviews it received online.
This was a big mistake. It is a sweet story, but it is most definitely for the young teen market. The setting is beautifully described, and the characters are appealing, but it's predictable, and the voice is that of an eleven year old girl.
It's a great choice for middle school kids.

A Powerful and Mystical Journey...

Review Date: 2009-03-02
From the talented author Cheryl Kaye Tardif we are given a poignant and haunting tale - a coming-of-age story of a young girl transplanted to an island culture that combined Native mysticism with the beautiful animal world of the whales.

When Sarah Richardson's family moved from Wyoming to Vancouver Island, she was not happy. Leaving behind a life of familiarity and comfort, including her best friend, she could not imagine ever experiencing joy again. Her parents, however, immerse themselves into their new lives - her mother resumes her art and her father, his marine biology.

But soon enough, she finds herself seamlessly drawn to the island, the ocean, and eventually to a new best friend - Goldie Dixon - and a wise old woman called Nana, who instilled Native Nootka mysticism into her new identity.

Unfortunately, as she begins a new school year, she becomes the victim of racism meted out by another young girl and learns what it's like to be bullied. In the process, however, she discovers the other girl's secret abuse by her father, and during a school field trip, when she saves the other girl's life, they become fast friends.

As life begins to settle into some kind of normalcy, Sarah is happy - she even has experienced her first crush on Adam, a young boy in her class.

But then life takes a tragic turn, as she learns of her mother's terminal illness. Then in a horrible and devastating moment that dramatically alters all of their lives, something happens in that hospital room; something that Sarah cannot remember - hysterical amnesia, the doctors report. Because her father is the suspect, he is sent to prison for murder...for allegedly turning off his wife's life support.

Through the horrible aftermath, Sarah clings to Nana's words: "When wolf walks by her, she will remember."

What finally emerges, years later, will set them all free.

A powerful tale of mystery, drama, coming-of-age, and Native mysticism, Whale Song: A Novel was like a magical journey...I couldn't put it down!

To the midway point of ISoM, more or less, Kandel weaves together elements of his personal story with the elements of his professional development. The weaving is done ably and interestingly. After the midway point, Kandel more or less abandons the conceit of writing autobiography and focuses almost exclusively on the science. ISoM is, especially from then on, quite a challenging read. But it richly rewards a reader's efforts. One of the top reviewers on this page calls ISoM something like 'candy for science types'. I'd say that's just right. It doesn't get more fascinating than the science that is at the core of ISoM. Kandel is a deeply learned and infectiously enthusiastic guide to the New Science of Mind. I wish more scientists of his stature would publish their own scientific autobiographies. Kandel has done the thinking public a great service. A terrific read!

Autobiography & best of all, great science

Review Date: 2009-06-22
Great journey through a lifelong search for memory starting from its molecular mechanisms in a bottom-up fashion. This autobiographical book narrates Dr. Kandel's investigations of the mechanisms of memory by analyzing a very simple neuronal system - one sensory neuron, one interneuron, one motor neuron - and how Pavlov's learning protocols (habituation, sensitization and classical conditioning) act through this system. He found that the neuronal basis for learning, namely for short term memory is chemical signalling and synaptic strengthening between neurons.

Further inquiries together with new scientific discoveries in gene technology, enabled him and his team to set the foundations for our understanding of long term memory. This type of memory is not a temporary chemical state, but a true modification of the neural system by driving the formation of more active neuronal terminals and therefore more synapses and more connections between existing neurons. This is accomplished when a protein turns on a gene which in turn generates the formation of new terminals.

I was a bit afraid that the book would contain little scientific explanations or that it would be oversimplified, due to its autobiographic character. However I was positively surprised to find quite the contrary. In this book you will find probably better explanations of cellular signalling (especially neuronal signalling), ion channels, membrane receptors, etc. than in many molecular biology books. (Life Itself: Exploring the Realm of the Living Cell is highly recommended). You will find equally good explanations of the most recent discoveries in genetics and gene technologies (hox genes, gene manipulation, genes as switches, the nature of "nature vs. nurture" in genetics, etc. Nature Via Nurture : Genes, Experience, and What Makes Us Human is also really good).

The autobiographical part helps in three ways:
1) It gives a brief outline of the field of neurosciences during the second half of the 20th century, from the perspective of a great neuroscientist. It starts with psychoanalysis, neurology, cognitive neuroscience and finally the genetic basis of our brains, while it explains the major contributions and breakthroughs in these fields.
2) It is probably one of the best insights into the way scientists work; it narrates how the author chose the questions he wanted to answer, the choices he had to made regarding the experimental object (the animal on which he would perform his experiments, which is probably as important to success as the experiments themselves), the technological constraints and opportunities, etc.
3) It explains how gene technology firms were born and how scientists are helping to find cures and medications in these fields.

Eric Kandel provides readers with a compelling account of developments in molecular biology and neuroscience, including the work leading to his 2000 Nobel Prize in Medicine or Physiology. At the same time, he offers an overview of his own personal and intellectual development. Describing memories, alongside his study of memory itself, he recounts his emigration from Austria as a child and his successful effort, many years later, to engage the Austrian goverment in accepting greater responsibility for its role in the Nazi Holocaust. The book is unusually well written and clear.

"In Search of Memory: The Emergence of a New Science of Mind" by Eric R. Kandel. W.W. Norton & Company, Inc. NY 2006. ISBN 978-0-393-32937-7 Pbk. 510/429 pgs. Table Contents 2 pgs., Preface 5 pgs., Gloss. 4 pgs. Notes & Sources 31 pgs., Index 22 pgs., 8 1/4" x " x 5 1/2". Inveiglements include some exceptionally well-chosen B/W photos of childhood & later life along with schemata depicting research methodology, etc.

A nicely written, detailed autobiography by established author and researcher, Eric Kandel, who recites his life and times with emphasis on his childhood C. Nov. 7, 1938, a ninth birthday and an abrupt Nazi police intrusion, a calamitous Kristallnacht and his departure with older bros. Ludwig from Vienna to U.S., and an emphasis as an adult recalling the post-Holocaust Jewry theme of "Never-Forget" - plus his education which forged interests in psychoanalysis, biologies and thence study of memory and how the mind works.

The treatise has 30 chapters, some decidedly scientifically composed on enzyme systems which allow/permit memories (short term and long term), etc., others on the various peoples in his life, perhaps his 1st biology lesson provided by the seductive 25 yr. old housemaid, Mitzi, when he was 8 years old (later ran away with the gas repairman). Kandel provides a quaint dwelling on their bourgeois family life in sensual Vienna, moves on to Hitler's rise to power, his confrontation with Schuschnigg, Austrian chancellor, the Kristallnacht and Hitler's invasion, and worsening of racial anti-Semitism deriving from the Doctrine of Deicide as taught by the Roman Catholic Church led to belief that the Jews killed Christ and a doctrine evidenced in Spanish Inquisition and adopted in 1870's by some of Austria's and Germany's intellectuals thence becoming official public policy after March 1938.

In time Kandel turns to the conflicts of Freud's id, ego and superego; and after studying at both Harvard and Colombia, he embarks on his career as cellular biologist first and foremost with Aplysia sp., sea hare or giant marine snail to study nerve reflexes, and in time, serotonin, cyclic AMP, CREB-1, CREB-2, kinase A, then protein CPEB (a prion). There follows a dissertation on Alzheimer's disease, benign senescent forgetfulness and interest in cognitive (memory-enhancing) drugs. Kandel in time becomes associated with both Synaptic & Memory Pharmaceuticals in 1996 to develop a "little red pill" for age-related memory loss.

In concluding chapters has a digression on Alfred Nobel of dynamite fame, the Stewardship of prizes with the author a recipient of the Nobel Prize in 2000 for Medicine or Physiology, and finally an interesting 2004 anecdote about screaming at Austrian, Elisabeth Lichtenberger for mouthing anti-Semitic propaganda. Exceeding well written, in delicate and name-dropping prose, this book should be of interest to everyone with interests in science, war and workings of the mind.

A Must-Have for the Serious Student of Spanish

If you have a good basic understanding of grammar concepts, (meaning nouns, verbs, clauses, etc.) this should be invaluable. For instance, you are reading a story, and you notice that EL bebe's name is Marta; or you are coasting along through a program like Rosetta Stone, and all of a sudden you notice that "el bebe" is dressed in pink, and has a cute little barrette in her hair! The answer is right here, simple or complex. (This book is REALLY invaluable used with Rosetta Stone.)

I like how it points out regional differences; for instance, it explains things like: In Latin America, one uses "mujer" for woman and "esposa" for wife, but in Spain one uses "mujer" for either. I just got this book a few days ago. It has already helped me to translate a couple of sentences in "Dona Barbara" (a Venezuelan classic) that had me stymied. Now, if I could just locate an equivalent volume for French....

I was going to say a lot more, but a previous reviewer (Steven P. Kanig) pretty much said it all.

This book is an absolute mine of information. Highly recommended.

Best advanced Spanish book available for LatinAmerican Spanish

This is probably, at least currently, the best and most advanced Spanish grammar text available that is for use of LatinAmerican Spanish. There is a similar book,A Comprehensive Spanish Grammar (Blackwell Reference Grammars) (Paperback, but it is strictly focused on the use of Spanish in Spain. I have lots of Spanish grammar books--from beginning to advanced, and this is probably the best of the lot.

This it not for a beginner. This would be for an advanced intermediate Spanish language who is self-motivated and a self-learner and probably has a great interest in languages in general or at least in Spanish.

A must have

I love this book-as a Spanish major, I consider this the "bible" of Spanish grammar. It breaks down every aspect of Spanish grammar-even small things. It gives examples of how to use it and examples of common mistakes by English speakers. It is complicated and I would not recommend this for beginning students. It "speaks" to you believing you have a certain amount of previous knowledge that might confuse beginning learners.

Absolutely the best Spanish grammar for English speakers. Period.

I keep B&B close at hand. My only slight disagreement with some of the other glowing reviews here is that if you love Spanish, you'll find this book to be not only a superb reference, but a highly enjoyable reading experience. I will frequently look something up, and end up re-reading an entire chapter or two. I never fail to learn something new. The many real-world literary examples are wonderful, and it's hard to read a chapter without an "Ahah!!" moment.

Unlike other textbooks, this is where you learn Spanish with all its ambiguities, national and regional quirks, and the marvelous subtleties that make Spanish such a rich and rewarding language. And while the technically correct answers are all here, this is where you'll learn the differences of opinion about what is correct, how Spanish is evolving, and how people actually use the language.

Do you have to be an intermediate or advanced speaker to read this book? Absolutely not. While this is definitely not a basic textbook, even if you're a relative beginner but want to progress beyond just getting by and truly learn the language, you can follow up your beginning texts by reading the appropriate chapters of B&B and learn much more. You won't absorb or even understand everything the first time, but that's perfectly OK. It just means that this book will never be boring, because over time, as you come back to the same chapters, you'll learn (and retain) something new each time.

Is everything you'll ever want to know about Spanish here? No, of course not. This isn't where you'll learn (or be able to look up) all of the rich and colorful expressions that are so much a part of the Spanish language, for instance, although hundreds of examples of idiomatic speech are used throughout the book. There are other books that are dedicated to Spanish expressions. That's not the purpose of B&B.

I am a believer that you can't learn a language well without actually studying grammar. Sure, you can buy one of the popular programs that teach through repetition, and I'm sure those programs get you to a certain level of proficiency, and help greatly with pronunciation and common expressions. But unless you're born speaking a language, you'll never be fluent and correct without actually sitting down and learning the rules of grammar, IMHO. And there's no better resource than B&B to accomplish that.

Butt and Benjamin should be commended on achieving something rare: writing and keeping current and alive a scholarly but readable and very accessible work that contributes immensely to the enjoyment and ability to more fully participate in a entire world of language and culture.

I like mostly everyone liked this book; it opened my eyes to a better way to garden. The jury is still out on "Compost Tea", very little true long-term scientific trials so far, and E.Coli can be quickly introduced into the soil if brewed with poor compost and molasses, and/or poor equipment, for further reading go to the microbeorganics web site. Some "Organic" ingredients are not always organic, currently "Inert Ingredients", which could be non-organic, are not required to be listed. As far as balancing the best uses of "Organic" and non-organic "The Truth About Organic Gardening: Benefits, Drawbacks, and the Bottom Line" by Jeff Gillman would be an excellent follow-up read to this book, as well as "Gaia's Garden, Second Edition: A Guide To Home-Scale Permaculture" by Toby Hemenway. All-in-all an excellent book but the brewing thing should be handled very carefully; it is not a fix-all and could be very dangerous if not done properly. Finally rotor-tilling one time can actually be good for poor soil, just one time only not every year. Then consider "Sheet Mulching", so much easier.

Buy this if you want a beautiful garden, now and the future. Feed the soil!!

I dislike reading books but I found this book easy and fun to read. There are many technical/scientific explainations in this book but it still makes very good sense...common sense to a gardener perhaps. Through many years of gardening (usually 'organic') I found that a lot of what I have read I believe to be true; i.e. through experience it works! Some of the new things I've learned from this book I've tried and they appear to be working as well.
I'm not an organic gardening 'purist' but I guess I've always taken care of the soil; using leaves, compost, cow/chicken manures, etc. without even realizing how healthy I was keeping my soil. Bottom line...my neighbors can't seem to compete even though THEY try. Hey, I'm just gardening :)

I'm gardening since 20yrs, the last decade I attempted an organic approach and failed - I got slugs and snails and all pests you can imagine.
After reading this book I know why and how to "heal" my garden.
I will recommand the book to all my friends.

Prior to reading this book, I was one of the millions of Americans who bought into the wonders of "Miracle Grow" & "Turf Builder". Oh how wrong I was. After reading this wonderful book on the importance of the amazing world of soil, I've sworn off my dependence on these synthetic fertilizers in favor of compost & compost teas.
In part one of the book , the author does a fantastic job of educating the readers on the make-up of soil. Then in part two, the author provides the readers with helpful soil improvement techniques that will hopefully wean America of its fascination with synthetic fertilizers. Every gardener should have a copy of this book in their library.

With so many helpful reviews, what more could I possibly add? Healthy at 100 is much more than a book about longevity. It's a challenge to not only change your perspective on your own health, but to make a difference in our own communities, and our family. John Robbins will take you into the seemingly heavenly world of the Abkhasians of the Caucasus Mountains, the Vilcabambans of Ecuador and the Hunzans of Pakistan, and then jerk you down to earth with a mission. Haven't read about the China Study or the Okinawa Study? John will get you up to speed.
A must read for anyone he is even remotely concerned about a better quality of life.

a no-brainer

I'd give this title 5 stars if he wasn't so darn wordy and repetitive. Very useful information and lots of data to back everything up.

The supposed mainstream medical professionals have us all hyped into believing that a pill here and there will cure everything that ails us, and that many of the diseases we suffer from in this day and age are a result of it's just "the way it is". John Robbins, from analyzing those populations who have an extraordinary number of elders shows this is just not true. Over and over he documents cases whereby these elder populations suffer from none of the common diseases such as heart disease, cancer, etc. but, when the Western world knocks on their doorsteps in the form of unhealthy foods and ideas, the number of disease-free occupants takes a nose-dive.

It is very obvious it is our diet and lifestyle that causes these diseases, not the "it's just the way it is" and attack it with a pill doctrine.

A whole section of the book is devoted to feel-good things such as family and friends and purpose making a difference in how long people live as well.

Nothing complicated about the ideas in this book - just common sense once you've read the data. Ignore the almost daily studies that espouse this or that being good for you with contradictions galore. Time to get back to basics and use your head. Read this book and you'll be convinced.

Although there is much to like about this book, there are also some glaring inconsistencies. While it may well be true that the healthy societies presented in the book live on plant-based diets with little animal protein or fat, other societies in which the population eats high proportions of fat from animal sources are similarly healthy but not mentioned. Robbins set out with his own prejudice and excluded research that did not coincide with his hypothesis. To conclude that a low-fat, plant based diet is optimal for everyone based on these few examples is by no means conclusive proof. Even in Okinawa, the population eats plenty of pork and uses lard in their cooking, something Robbins conveniently omits from his discussion.

Additionally, Robbins praises the Okinawa diet and the Asian diets in general for their high intake of whole grains. Yet he never gives us an indication of what these whole grains might be and how much is consumed. Actually, Asians eat white rice, often three times each day. There is a saying in Japan that "white rice is easier on the stomach." But Robbins makes no mention of the high intake of white rice in the typical Asian diet. So when he can't explain something that blatant, he ignores it.

I think it's time for Americans to stop looking for the magic bullet answer to their diet woes. We only need to look at our own history to see where we made a turn for the worse and correct our course. A mere century ago, we did not have an obesity crisis or epidemics of modern chronic disease. And at that time, we were NOT consuming a low fat, plant based diet. What's changed? Plenty.

If you want a very thoughtfully written, well-researched book that busts the low fat myths wide open, read Gary Taubes' new book, "Good Calories, Bad Calories." Robbins is one who has bought the low-fat myth hook, line and sinker, even when faced with his own contradictions.

The portions of "Healthy At 100" devoted to exercise and lifestyle are quite nice.

"Healthy @ 100" claims that milk/dairy is bad for you, but what the book fails to mention is that the European and Near-Eastern Caucasian people underwent a natural selection process that enabled them to digest milk. Meaning, that ancient individuals that couldn't digest milk died off, and the humans that could digest milk thrived and reproduced, and thus furthered their milk digestion genetic make-up .

So obviously, mother nature thought it best to consume dairy products. The individuals with the ability to digest milk grew big and strong, and survived, the ones who couldn't, shriveled up and perished.

If you saw John Robbins interviewed in the movie "Super Size Me", he looked emaciated, quite honestly, I thought he looked liked an AIDS/HIV patient. Sunken eyes and very little muscle mass. Hardly the image most men strive for.

No, I refuse to give up dairy......ice cream, yogurt, sour cream, cheese and milk chocolate is what I live for. I hate the taste of chalky tasting, estrogen laden soy.

anyway, all the claims in "Healthy @ 100" are a crock of cow excrement.

John Robbin's book Health at 100 is one of the finest books I've read on living a healthy, vibrant life. Based on his own life experience and more particulary on the extensive research around the longest lived and healthiest, happiest people on the planet it is a must read for any person, at any age and stage of life, seeking sound, commensense input on living a healthy life. Very well written and engaging I was truely reinspired the whole book through. I have purchases copies for family and friends.

John's watershed book "Diet For A New America" was the catalyst, 20 years ago, for me becoming a Vegan Vegetarian. This is every bit as profound and compelling. John A Wood, Darlington, Western Australia
