It is a book that I prefer to do very slowly really studying every detailed explanation until I feel that I have truly understood and memorized them. I am very pleased with this book and I will be enjoying it and refering to it for a long time.

I've worked and studied for years with Richard and his institute and am so relieved that he has written down the groundbreaking basics of his fingerprint analysis system for all of us and those who will come after us.

If you really want to know your Life Purpose so you can wake up to the life you love to live, this is it! What are you waiting for? You're been carrying it around in your fingerprints since before you were even born.

This is bigger than just a book!

In the spirit of full disclosure, I was a student of Richard Unger's at the International Institute of Hand Analysis 20 years ago, where I learned his system of reading fingerprints as life purpose and life lesson imprints. And, also in the spirit of full disclosure, I've been waiting 20 years for this book and am thrilled with it!

Richard's grasp of phenomenology, complexity theory, quantum physics, psychology, and existential philosophy is nothing short of amazing, but even more amazing is that from his incredible mind sprang a system and a book that is accessible to anyone in the English-speaking world who wants to find out why they are on the planet and what gets in the way of living a fulfilling life.

This is not simply a 'self-help' book. It's a tool available to anyone in the helping professions or looking for a meaningful life.

I am so excited to have the definitive book from the master story teller and hand analyst. Richard, who has spent over 35 years researching the meaning of fingerprints, has been my mentor for the past 10 years and I have been waiting for his book. The first of many I am sure...there is so much more to tell. I wish that he offered a professional fingerprint analysis option. Deciphering your own patterns is not always easy. So, if he does, then I will give the book 5 stars for helping people own and live their own stories. Congrats!

This book was necessary for Comp.2. There is a large variety of different types and styles of literary works. This seem to allow the professors a wide lattitude in choosing works that they feel are most appropriate for the lesson that they wish to convey. There seems to be a large range in what works are chosen from this book for further analysis. The other students that I have asked about this course and book all used different selections from this book.

I love these books. I give them as gifts often. It is great for a night time devotional. It has a story and at the end of the story it has points to ponder on for the child and questions and comments for mom or dad to identify with and pass on personal experience we might have encountered that pertains to the story we just read! There is a mom/son book dad/daughter adn dad/son books too! but if the other parent reads the book, the questions can still apply-the book is not very limiting to just mom or dad!

Writing guides and handbooks fall into roughly two categories: Some are long, comprehensive, and, except for the extremely punctilious writer, unfathomable; a few are direct, useful, and ideal for serious writers who would rather write than spend hours finding the rules for semicolons. In the latter category falls Brandon Royal's brilliant The Little Red Writing Book.

The articulate exposition of his twenty principles of writing and thirty rules of grammar fit neatly into 159 short, accessible pages, pages undoubtedly well-thumbed by thousands of grateful writers for years. Built carefully and simply around the categories of structure, style, readability and grammar, Mr. Royal's little book will satisfy both the sit-down-and-read-all-about-it reader and the frustrated-fly-by-and-check-something-quickly writer.

I recommend this wonder to all my writing students; one day the writing committee with wise up and make this a primary text for all writing courses at my school. I won't hold my breath, but you could buy a copy now anyway.

When I first began this book I was a little skeptical. Similar books had left me unsatisfied in the past. My fears were soon dispelled. Of course, there is no such thing as a perfect book on writing technique (or any other subject) but The Little Red Writing Book is the closest thing I've ever seen. Filled with practical, useful advice, it taught me the fundamentals for good writing. It laid a foundation for excellence. That's why I would recommend it to anyone who is looking to improve their writing. It covers many subjects that are relevant to students and professionals alike. It is all around a great book.

This is a really great book, both for those wanting to write travel stories, or those who just want to lose themselves in a good story of a far away place.

Rolf Potts is a very talented writer, and in this book he writes a little bit about how he does it, and a lot about his journeys.

I really wish he had written more on the "how-to" aspects of the writing, but the parts he did include were very valuable.

If you have not hear about Rolf Potts, this is a good place to start. His other book "Vagabonding" is also a very nice read for those who have caught the travel bug! Both books are highly recommended by me to all my friends.!

I say surprisingly good not because I expected Rolf Potts to be a terrible writer, but because I expected envy to overcome me as I read about someone else having the adventures that should be mine. Instead Rolf took me with him through Libya, Cairo and rural southeast Asia, sharing personal memories and impressing me with his knowledge of travel writers. And I appreciate his confessions at the end of each chapter that made me feel as if my own stories might be worthy of telling if I just skip over the boring bits. Which is what I'll do right now: read the book, be amused, inspired and get out-even if it is just to a hometown museum in Kansas.

Loved it!!!

Travel books have always tickled my fancy. I have always had a strong desire to travel, but in the past I was without the means to do so and I always reveled in the stories of others. I lived vicariously through the writings of authors like Bill Bryson. Having taken my first extended trip overseas this past summer to India, I have now finally experienced some of what the road has to offer; however, after returning I am left with a persistent and nagging travel itch that will not subside. This book allows me to satisfy that urge.

I couldn't put it down on my first read, and having just finished I am already going back for another round. Highly recommended!

Review Date: 2007-10-25
I chose this book for two reasons: Joyce Rupp is my favorite author of spiritual materials, and I was in the process of walking my daughter home during her final year of life.

The stories and prayers helped me feel that I was not alone in this journey. That others had experienced it before and lived through it to tell the tale gave me strength to do the same. I know that my daughter had a better quality of life through this process of dying from cancer and being in home hospice care because I was better prepared to companion her.

I highly recommend this book to clergy, family members, and other caregivers. It is full of 'hope' as well as practical suggestions gleaned from others' experiences of companioning the dying.

It's also a great read for those who support the caregivers who support the ill.

The Meaning of Marxism by D'Amato is a good start for any person wishing to learn about the ideologies of the great Karl Marx. The book is up-to-date and has many references on how Marx's ideas provide the answers to the problems we face today in society. It touches upon other great Marxist thinkers like Vladimir Lenin. It is a good introduction and will help you understand the work of Karl Marx. But I recommend after this to read the Communist Manifesto, which shows the mind set and the thoughts of Karl Marx.

This is a clear and concise overview of Marxism. It breaks down the major thoughts of the ideology and presents them in an understandable manner.

This is fantastic book for college students, particularly those who will be presenting research or essays that include Marxism as a topic or thesis. The most difficult concepts of Marxism, such as dichotomy, are easily understood by the manner in which D'Amato has presented them.

In truth, the ideas within this book, as they are presented, has made this book a citation treasure trove for presenting key arguments within several of my essays. The logic that is laid out can be used to analyze a number of historical, cultural, and socio-political topics in a relative manner.

The perfect study guide for an introduction to Marx and Engels
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2007-10-30
Paul D'amato takes the classical works of Marx and Engels (Capital, Communist Manifesto, The German Ideology, and others) and selectively quotes the trenchant passages and then parses and elaborates their meaning with simple (but not simplistic) explanations. For an example early in the book:

"Greed and selfishness are not the result of bad individual choice, but are engendered by the competitive and profit driven nature of capitalism. A capitalist who is not greedy for profit is a capitalist who will lose out to his more greedy competitors. The problem with the notion that it is only necessary to change people's ideas in order to change society is that this leaves the social structure of society intact. `This demand to change consciousness amounts to a demand to interpret the existing world in a different way, i.e., to recognize it by means of a different interpretation,' Marx wrote of some German idealists of his day. In doing this `they are in no way combating the real existing world,' but are `combating solely the phrases of this world.' The materialist view is exactly the opposite. Morals are derived from particular forms of human social organization. Capitalism breeds greed, not vice versa. In societies that foraged for food and shared it as a collective, greed was frowned upon because it disrupted the functioning of the group." [Page 26]

That short paragraph explained Marx's views arguably better than did Marx himself! Marx's explanation of the same phenomenon takes up thirteen pages in the original text. I truly wish that the political science professors and graduate assistants who taught me Marxist political economy in college had had D'amato's book on their reading list or even used it as the principal text; it's that good.

Essential reading

Review Date: 2008-10-13
"The Meaning of Marxism" by Paul D'Amato provides an accessible introduction to Marxist thought for general readers. Mr. D'Amato is an accomplished editor and writer of socialist publications who displays both a thorough knowledge of the Marxist ouevre and a knack for connecting Marxist theory to contemporary world events. The book fills a void by helping us understand the importance and relevancy of Marxism towards helping us remedy the failures of an increasingly dysfunctional and unstable capitalist system.

At a time when the word 'socialism' is casually but erroneously thrown about to describe public bailouts for reckless private bankers and short-sighted businesses whose excesses have driven them to financial crisis, Mr. D'Amato reminds us that socialism is actually about empowering the people to democratically manage their own affairs. According to Mr. D'Amato, this definition explains why the Soviet Union and Cuba have failed the socialist test and undeservedly tarnished the Marxist brand. Yet, to the extent that inequality and injustice persist, Marxism has inspired new generations of activists to struggle for political and revolutionary change in our time. As promising as this might be, Mr. D'Amato cautions that the kind of socialism envisioned by Marx can not merely be championed by individual leaders but must be supported by bottom-up movements whose ultimate objective must be the withering away of the state, which is the mechanism by which the rich and powerful have institutionalized their dominion over the poor.

Mr. D'Amato goes on to discuss the major themes analyzed by Marx, including materialism, profits, working class politics, human nature, racism, imperialism and war, the environment, and much more. The numerous insights gained are enormously helpful to the reader who wishes to understand the various forces that have shaped the modern experience. As Mr. D'Amato makes clear, Marx' compelling arguments remain essential reading to anyone seeking to develop a coherent and critical worldview. With laissez-faire ideology currently in ill repute, there can be no doubt that the markeplace of ideas is in dire need of the enrichment that can be provided by thought-provoking books such as this.

I highly recommend this book to everyone.

This is a great book to have. It lists synonyms, antonyms, analogous, and contrasted words. The vast majority of the book is dedicated to explaining the difference between synonymous terms. The layout and format of the book facilitates searching for words. There is an extremely informative introduction that provides a brief history of synonymy and how the current book came to be what it is.
The dictionary defines a synonym as: meaning "one of two or more words in the English language which have the same or very nearly the same essential meaning." As for antonyms, the definition is: "An antonym is a word so opposed in meaning to another word, its equal in breadth or range of application, that it negates or nullifies every single one of its implications."

i was about to write a review of this book, as well as give my unassailable opinion as to which thesaurus is best. then, i read the first review, submitted by A CUSTOMER. the review is pretty much exactly what i was going to write, with one notable, though admittedly minor exception. the most startling thing about this book is that you very well may find yourself READING IT. it's fascinating to read about the different synonyms and how they differ in appropriateness and meaning. another thing about this other person's review is that he implied that he had an earlier edition of the book. mine is ninteen-sixty-eight edition, although i've used (and, unfortunately stored away) much earlier editions. i'm not sure about the current one, but the earlier ones distinguished between words that are now considered indistinguishable. for example, did you know that woody allen's humor is not self-"deprecating", it's "depreciating". and, i don't know if i used the quotation marks and commas correctly in the preceding sentence. anyway, don't be swayed by the fact that this is not a thesaurus. what it is, is both interesting and useful.

Indispensable for ESLs. Buy it and you will never regret. See the other reviews for why. In other thesauruses you can not choose a word without knowing the shades of meaning and usage discriminating one from the other. This can be easy for native speakers, it is but terribly difficult for an ESL. I know, because I am one. From the moment I opened its package, I have never used any other thesaurus.

An Exceptional Commentary for all Christians

Stott has written a commentary on Romans that is suitable for readers of all level of Christian maturity, interest, and previous study of Romans. Stott writes simply and thoroughly on the text, the message, the purpose and the personal and corporate applications of Romans. I think this commentary is a balanced look at interpreting the Greek text and conveying the gospel message that Paul, by the Holy Spirit, wanted to provide to his original audience and how it applies today.

Stott does a great job of looking at the big picture of the text and the individual points made by particular verses and sections of the letter. He willingly provides disagreeing interpretations and weighs in with his own conclusions when helpful.

This commentary is helpful for research or devotional Bible Study. I recommend it for those interested in learning more about the gospel message of Romans.

very good, but too long

For me, this is probably one of the best written commentaries I have read in a while, however, the length of it isn't necessary, but as far as understanding and depth, and a catalyst to spur on continual thinking, it is good...

As a retired United Methodist clergy, I have many commentaries by a variety of authors. None can hold a light to J. R. W. Stott for accuracy to the biblical text nor evangelical zeal. Stott will still be communicating and commending Jesus Christ long after he has been buried.

Scholarly, comprehensive, readable.

Stott conveys a sturdy solidarity with the historic Christian faith, rather than promoting any pet agendas of his own, or an abrasive combat with opposing views. He reasons in the spirit of an objective scientist whose field is theology. He offers evidence, reasoning, and cordial summaries of several conflicting viewpoints on key, difficult passages. The conclusions he favors in each case he sets forth mildly in a way that leaves the reader feeling equipped with a credible stance to take on the issue. So, this commentary serves the teacher as a rich resource, and the simple Christian studying Romans as uplifting nourishment to the soul.
