The k-students in my classroom were captivated by this story, they loved the illustrations, and looked forward to when I would turn the page, so they could see what tie was on the page. The illustrations are fun and colorful.

"Mr.Tanen!" "where is your umbrella tie it's raining?!!"
Mr.Tanen ALWAYS wore great funfilled ties, until Mr.Apple told Mr.Tanen he HAD to be proper!!! Mr.Tanen didn't feel right one day so he stayed home. Mr.Apple was the sub principal. each of Mr.Tanen's ties in his closet held a symbol {ex.hearts for love}.See how Mr.Tanen's absence turns Mr.Apple into a good apple!!!

A fun, enjoyable story with beautiful illustrations

I loved this book and so did my kids. The colors and pictues are very inviting to children of all ages. Mr. Tanen is a very likable character and his story is funny and thought provoking. The story teaches a subtle lesson of tolerance while entertaining simultaniously. My 10 year old loved it as well as my 3 & 4 year olds, and so did I.

I just bought Hillbilly Hollywood by Debbie Bull, which is a great book, and I already own a copy of Cowboy Ties which I feel is very kitchy and delightful and I would like to give the book as gifts, but it is almost impossible to find. REPRINT IT!

Awesome, beautiful photos about the history of Cowboys & tie

Not only is the photography beautiful and inspiring, but the history of the Cowboy and the evolution of his neckwear is very interesting to both the collector and the student of the American West

A cute, lighthearted book and a great read aloud for younger students. The principal gives each child a different tie and exchanges roles and duties such as a teacher or janitor, etc for a day. Of course, the principal becomes a student for the day and when the school board members arrive for a visit, they are not happy with what is going on, but somehow the 'new' principal has a very different idea and her subtle message comes across at the end. A great book to explore different views and perspectives of people and schools in general.

There is no better threesome of books for a principal to read to elementary students than the Mr. Tanen's books. Mr. Tanen's Ties Rule is a fantastic 3rd book which my children (both at school and home) adored. Every child wonders what it is like to have an important job in a school and they will be filled with ideas of how to run school following reading this book. Maryann Cocca-Leffler's illustrations add to the enjoyment of this wonderful book. This one is a must-have both for school and at home!

I found a copy of The Tie: trends & traditions in a second-hand bookshop and read it in one sitting. It contains about 50,000 words and every one of them is gripping. It's Longditude for neckwear. Why on earth isn't it reissued? It is a classic.

Brilliant analysis of neckwear

This costume history book is unlikely to be equalled. Sarah Gibbings has done an outstanding job of recording the history of a small but often vital part of a man's attire.

If you can beg, borrow or steal a copy, do so. If potential publishers read this, buy the rights immediately. They will have a best-seller on their hands.

Book on tying ties. A history and practical use.

If the tie was used in fashion, it is in this book. It took a little trial and error on using the illustrations for knot tying, but they worked. Many of the ties in this book aren't used anymore. But if you were trying to recreate an appearance from the past, this book IS A MUST. Many ties of every shape, size, length, and style. Along with the how-to, a real photograph of the tie being worn with its appropiate in fashion is in the book for your viewing. WOW. If you want to shine better than a clip-on, this is the book for you. But,...it is VERY expensive.

I have used this book for years and there is no necktie (well, almost) that can escape me now - there is the perfect knot for most every tie; one simply has to have the time and patience to find it.

But order this book from Amazon UK. I can't believe the prices here!

The book is a bit old school but it does have about 13 main types with a bunch of variations of those.

Entertaining, but overpriced

This book contains an entertaining overview of the history of ties, including discussion of specific tie knots. If you do not know how to tie a tie, the book's illustrations are very useful (but presumably such illustrations can be downloaded from the web for free).

The science part of the book is rather weak. First, the number 85 is based on knots with up to 9 moves (so ``The" in the title is rather misleading). Even then they do not distinguish between knots with different finishes (some knots can be finished off by passing the thick end through more than one loop). These are mentioned in the book, but are not included into the count. The ``aesthetic" knots are the most symmetric knots in each of the many categories they define; knots are not compared across the categories. The ``math" sections are only vaguely linked to each other or the subject at hand.

I received as a gift the 2000 Broadway Books hardcover edition of the same book, which is nicer in appearence than the softcover version.

Order from amazon uk instead

While out of stock and grossly overpriced in the used section here, it's in stock and ships quickly from amazon uk. International shipping is cheap, and it's way, way cheaper buying a new copy and shipping it from the UK than paying some of the used prices here!

My copy, with shipping, came to $12 and it arrived a week after placing the order.

This book is great for making memories from Dad's ties, Grandpa's ties and to all that have passed in our family. What better way to make a lap quilt etc than with the ties that Grandpa wore????
This book gives you many ideas and ways to use them.

Although the concept of the book, and the designs in it are good, the author got lazy and used a lot of abreviations that are not normal, and I found myself constantly referring to the front of the book to find out what the abreviation meant. A book with instructions on how to build a quilt should be eaiser to follow and not require you to thumb back and forth through the book.

I am disappointed, as I love the quilts, just not the instructions. Why do authors have to get lazy?

This is a well written craft book that gives plenty of ideas for using ties in crafts. My father recently passed away and he had many ties. Using this book I can make something for myself, my sister and brother using his ties as a remembrance.

If you are a collector this may interest you. The book is primarily photographs of beautiful collectible ties. There is some history of the tie and labels to look for. All in all is is a pretty book. I had hoped for more information on values but was disappointed in that respect.

This is a charming, but ultimately shallow, book. It's something I like to look at when I'm looking for inspiration on vintge style, but there's not much context here. I'd love a bit of socio-history to give it some substance.

Well, if you're into ties, this is a great book! Not only it is fun to look at, but it serves as a useful guide for dating and categorizing old ties. This book has quite a bit of good info, as well, especially about labels and designers. Worth a look!
