This is a detailed account of the rivelry of Woody and Bo. They hated each other on the field but loved each other in their hearts. A book that people who followed Michigan and Ohio State football should read.

An excellent chronicle of an intense athletic rivalry set against the background of one of the most politically and socially tumultuous eras in modern American history. Rosenberg's in depth research and behind-the-scenes insights offer a glimpse of how two genuine titans in collegiate sports met the period's unique challenges of impacting young men...all the while establishing winning football programs in the traditional sense. Most deninitely "a story worth telling." Very well done!

One of the finest books on football, and a turbulent era in American history, to come along in years. Like a great novelist, Michael Rosenberg deftly weaves together multiple stories and complex characters, while making all of the original connections and conclusions of a fine historian.
"War" as I saw it.

Michael Rosenberg did a superb job illuminating the larger than life personalities of coaches Woody Hayes and Bo Schembechler. How do I know Rosenberg did a superb job? I know nothing about football except that two teams, wearing two different uniforms come together on a large field. Yes, I am a woman almost totally ignorant of testosterone-soaked sports. Yet I have to admit I was completely enthralled by "War." My family is from Ohio and though my husband isn't, he attended OSU during Woody's early era. So, I had some familiarity with the Ohio coach and wanted to learn more about him. Though the author is grounded in Michigan, I never felt that he treated one rival at the expense of the other. Rosenberg was completely fair and even-handed in his appraisal of the two men.
Those in the know about football (which is probably almost everyone else in the world), will enjoy the specifics of the plays. Though I could not because of my lack of experience, I will confess I raced to the end of the description to find out how the games turned out. What made the book compelling to me, though, was how the author reveals the depth of character of the two coaches. Through thoroughly researched primary sources, Rosenberg authentically sets each scene. The reader comes to know the two coaches as if one had known them firsthand. And, in doing so, one both loves and loathes them at the same time. At times I found I wanted to grab them by the neck, shake them and discipline them like children. But then I had to remind myself that the very quality I was reacting to was what made them the competitive fighting animals they were. And how they played off each other. Their antipathy compounded at the same time by their respect for and understanding of each other, was exquisite. Place all of this in the context of the tumultuous times of the 60's and 70's and you're in for a great ride. I especially loved learning about Don Canham, an ancillary character, whose luck, pluck and instinct, propelled him to success.
I highly recommend this book to people interested in sports, in football, in life. How Hayes and Schembechler chose to live their lives in their time in history has relevance for us today. If we could take away with us, the best of them, we would not do poorly.

An excellent introductory study of the issues which affect the ADHD athlete. Very readable. Interesting discussion of interplay between styles of concentration and different sports: eg. in which sports is ADHD an asset or a liability? Emphasizes the important role of the coach in giving consistent positive feedback. Gives suggestions re. ways to talk with coaches about ADHD and child's needs. Intriguing discussion of effects of medication on level of play. Summary of ways in which techniques aimed at improving the mental game (such as anxiety management or improved focus) can improve performance and enjoyment of their sport for ADHD kids.

This book is an easy and enjoyable read; at times you even find yourself smiling at the examples Michael Stabeno uses to illustrate his points. The book is comprehensive as it discusses what ADHD is, common misconceptions of ADHD, communication and coaching strategies, the implications of medication, and parenting tips for the athlete. I appreciated the discussion on perceiving common behavior traits of ADDers as assets rather than liabilities for the athlete. The strategies and tactics he provides are common sense and easily applied. As a parent of a child with a head injury who presents with ADHD-like symptoms, I have found the communication and coaching tips very applicable to life skills...getting ready for school, completing homework or chores. The information is straightforward, thought provoking and useable! I recommend it to all parents and coaches who interact with ADDers of any age.

Very readable--a good start for those interested in musculoskeletal medicine and athletics. The chapters are well organized and well-referenced. I think this is one of the better sports medicine books available.

When I bought this book I thought it would be a book like better runs but with completely new essays. When I got the book, I noticed that it wasn't really much more than a revised version of Better runs. There's absolutely nothing wrong with the content of this book -- it gives you great running advice. But if you've read Better runs, there's not much new to learn from this book. It does contain some new insights, so it still might be worth the purchase if you enjoy reading Henderson's work.

This book not only offers training tips, but racing strategies and most important- inspiration. I found the look at the mental side of running to be incredibly motivating, and i couldn't wait to get on my shoes and run out the front door. I re-read parts of it before races, just to keep up my mental fitness as well as my physical. I recommend this to ANY runner.

The diagrams that outline the different locomotor, non-locomotor and manipulative activities help break down all the skills I teach. I recommend this book to any and all physical educators.

This book has it all. Skills, drills, tactics, safety, how to organize the team and deal with parents as well as fitness and psychology goals. This is a professional publication, but written with the average youth coach in mind so there are many practical tips and trick that can be immediately implemented with a team. I'll be using this book for YEARS!

market and has significant number of errors and conflicting data. Good for review of primary care sports medicine, but use with caution. Accompanied by a question-answer book which does not always agree with the information in the text being tested.

I found this book very helpful to me. I'm a novice runner returning to a regular exercise routine after some years off. I'm on the other side of 50 so I needed a workout regimen that would allow me to slowly build up to a more streneous program...if I choose. This book doesn't make you feel like a turtle if your running 12 minute plus miles.
It offers very sane and practical advice and provides a variety of routines if you are a casual runner, 5k, 10k, half marathon or marathon runner. The goal of the book is not to try to have you run races, but, it does provide a road map if you decide you want to do it.
I found it very easy to follow and it allowed me to run to my potential without feeling guilty about not slapping a number on my back and trying to set personal best times.

I utilize this text for the Introduction to sports medicine elective I designed for my school disrtict. This came as a recommendation from the NYSAHPERD sports medicine chair as he developed a program to teach teachers how to develop sports med classes for high school students. The text is an easy read, clear pictures as well as quite thorough in content. I would recommend to anyone looking to do the same as I did.

The book was a page turner, finished in 3 hours. It tells the tale of peter shifting his energy into a sport instead of getting in to gang activities. It also speaks of the racism that Peter experienced avancing as a black fencer in a mostly white
sport. I especially enjoyed his adventures on the subway and
how he reacted in confrontational situations! A must read for

Peter Westbrook is one of the true gentlemen of fencing. He is also one of the great competitive fencers of the twentieth century. Needless to say, his rise from tough "street kid" to Olympic medal winner makes interesting reading. This book is a definite must for all fencing enthusiasts, but it should also have appeal for anyone who likes personal stories of challenge and perseverance
