The Underside of College Hoops

Journalists Alexander Wolff and Armen Keteyian show the underside of college basketball recruiting in this still relevant and hard-hitting book. As many know, the key to winning is recruiting the top players. Since the NCAA forbids paying athletes in cash - recruiters, scouts, coaches, and hustlers have alternative methods for landing the top jocks. As the authors show, those methods include gifts of athletic shoes, summer camps, and fun-filled recruiting trips. Parents of top athletes and their high school coaches sometimes receive dollars, favors and/or jobs. I particularly liked the authors' description of Nike executive Sonny Vaccaro, who skillfully exploits the process with his popular athletic shoes. Simply put, the game is awash in corruption,

Many realize that amateurism - paying athletes not in cash but with scholarships - is unworkable in big-money sports. Others know that too many top players leave college without a pro contract, and with little education. We fans may enjoy college basketball, but that cannot obscure the sport's dark underside.

This book has helped me a lot with the rehabilitation aspect of Athletic Training, which is my major at school. Two of the grad assistance have it and loved it, so I decided to get the book! So far it has been the best move, I have learned new exercises to help with athlete's that I didn't know about prior to this book. The only downfall was I bought it used from someone whom claimed the book had "NO writing or Highlighting" inside and once I received the book it was filled with highlighting. If it doesn't bother you when other people have highlighted information that you might not want highlighted than go ahead and buy it used. If not than I really recommend buying it new, especially if you are in a physical therapy or sports medicine field.

Excellent reference. Along the lines of, but just not as good as, Miller's classic Review of Orthopaedics.

Many years ago when I started running, "The Runner's Book" was the first publication I purchased about running. In it I learned many basic stretching techniques, running styles, and ways to prevent common injuries. I learned about shoe design, and how to get the most out of every workout. This book served as my "beginners bible" of running. It sat on my bookshelf right next to Jim Fixx's "Complete Book of Running."

THE runner's book for women new to the sport.
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2005-07-29
The first time I tried to go running I was 17 and didn't know what I was doing. My friend and I ran for an hour, were terribly sore the next day, and that was the end of that. When I was 30 I picked up this book, and when I finished it I knew enough to start running and stay with it for 6 years until a knee injury stopped me.

If you are an experienced runner, there are plenty of other specialty books and magazines that will be more interesting and fill in more detail, but if you have never run before, this is the book to start with, written from a woman's point of view. It will give you enough confidence and information to go out there and get started and see if this is the sport for you.

This is a good book if you like basketball alot and you like reading. I bought this book at a half price bookshop and I didn't stop reading until I was done with it. After I read it I started reading the others and they were good too. What I like about it is how Dave sticks up for Mr. Bowman after he has a heart attack. There is no language or violence in it so it would be a great book for a basketball lover.

It is a great book for training for speed in soccer. It is short, on the point and has a set of excellent practice programs which one can use. It definitely helped me a lot to develop a personalized training system. The shortcoming is that it doesn't discuss to much the physiology of the exercises.

VHS cautions should lessen sport's injuries

9/11/08 The VHS 's cautions should lessen spine injuries just by virtue of players and coaches emphasizing these cautions..The VHS is what it promises to be, "only up to and inclusive of prehospital care (removing garments and helments of the injured)"..Total approval of the VHS would have been had it included even minimal procedures of MRI & O/T and P/T , once it displayed how to remove garments and helmet of an athlete at the hospital .

A great book for a ortophaedic view!

This is a great book for those who seek for a orthopaedic view in sport medicine. Each part of the body is studied, including physical exam, treatment of injuries and return to activity. A good book for the physician improve the musculoskeletal medicine. Although, the book have short information about training, nutrition and supplements.
