Must Read for the Athletic Administrator

Its hard to believe that an athletic program in the Big 10 conference was close to bankrupcy in 1990. Lackluster performance on the field and poor fiscal responsibility led the Badgers to the edge of financial ruin.
What turned this program around? It depends on who you ask. Rick Telander (a senior Sports Illustrated writer) lays out the many complexities involved in the decisions made that not only returned Bucky and the UW athletic department to economic solviency, but to the Rose Bowl.
Anyone who coaches or is an athletic administrator should read this book. There are lessons to be learned for coaches and AD's at every level.
You can usually find this book for under at Amazon or any used bookstore in your area. It's worth that much just for the story about the fundraising golf tournament UW hosted and LOST money!

For anyone interested in fishing from the beach, this book is a must-have. It's more of a pamphlet, really, with not a lot of detailed information, but all the basics are covered plainly and simply. The sport has changed plenty since this was published, but the basics remain the same. Save yourself hours of scanning the internet and posting questions by reading this pamphlet, which lives up to it's title.

I've started looking over this book and Gary Barber has done a great job of capturing what is really needed with starting kids in athletics. Far too man of the "coaches" kids encounter today are ready to have them go pro at any cost.
Gary has done a great job at putting forward the development and making it fun. Assuring that the childs experience is rewarding yet still providing the desire to go higher. A very good piece of work, you should adapt it to the baseball, football and soccer coaches as well.

This is a really good book if you want a deep look into Georgia Football history. Stegeman did his homework. I highly recommend this book and "A Tailgater's Guide To SEC Football" for any serious Georgia or SEC enthusiasts.

The author provides a year-by-year history of each of the All Star games, giving the reader a run-down on the hoopla surrounding the event, the important players participating in the game, the politics and disputes surrounding the game, a discussion of the game itself, and a wrap-up that gives the reader what the contemporary views of the game were and comments on what some of the All-Stars achieved later in their careers. The author makes considerable use of sportswriters' comments, before and after the game, to enliven his narration.
Schmidt wisely understood that his history had to be more than a mere chronicle of the games, and both in the introduction and throughout his text shows how the All-Star Game was used by the National Football League to first lend legitimacy to the professional game and to help foster its growth. For sport historians this is the author's more valuable contribution. Librarians will find that Football's Stars of Summer fills an important gap in their coverage of football in their sport history collections.
Football fans, on the other hand, will enjoy reliving the exploits and exciting games of this annual event, which the author brings to life with his sparkling prose and astute insights. There is a small 20-photo section that illustrates some of the most famous teams, coaches, and All-Stars; a note on sources; an index; and appendices that provide a all-time game results, the most valuable player awards, All-Star captains, and most valuable of all, the All-Star team rosters.
