Very Interesting Read

As a college basketball fan, I found this book to be very interesting. As the book claims on its back cover, it really does provide a behind-the-scenes look at a Division I basketball program. It also provided quite a bit of background information throughout Penders 10 years, all of which culminated in the final season and nasty ending. Not being a Texas fan personally, I recommend it to all college basketball fans who enjoy reading about the greatest sport on earth.

The book Careers for Sports Nuts and Other Athletic Types by Ray Heitzmann is a great informational book. The book tells about occupations in the athletic department. For example the book describes jobs like physical therapy, coaching, sports communication and much more. This book is more for high school students who want to go into athletics for an occupation. I believe this book is a great book. I choose this book because I want to go into athletics; this book helped me narrow my choices.

The book Careers for Sports Nuts and Other Athletic Types reminds me of the lawyers in Inherit the Wind. In Inherit the Wind the lawyers are very successful. For example one of t he charters ran for president three times. I also recommend reading Inherit the Wind.

A good book for a lot of exercises

This book contains the Muscle/Tendon change classic, short form of Tai Chi, 8 piece of brocade (Ba Duan Jin), and some other exercises. This alone was worth the price of the book; less than $10.00. But it also contains a nice section on chinese massage. Basically two books for less than $10. The other books with the Muscle/Tendon change classic I've seen range about $30.

This is a particularly a good text for those involved, or about to become involved in sports coaching.

The book concentrates on partical and workable issues in sports development. The text is particularly useful for the American market mainly due to Ralph Sabock's history in coaching.

Many a purposeful qoute can be gleamed from the pages and which helps add weight to any essay. Moreover, the text allows the reader to focus his/her ideas on coaching and helps to address the issues of motivation, both intrinsic and extrinsic.

The book also aids the reader in overcoming the pitfalls of experience. Perhaps the only issue the book does not focus on is that of markes outside the US. Having said this the book advice is transposable.

Gripping reading, workable solutions, partical lesson plans and sound advice.

Excellent Resource

This book is an excellent resource for coaches involved in any sport. If you have already been a head coach for a while, most of the material is not going to be anything you have not dealt with already, but the author does a great job of putting the many tasks coaches have to deal with in perspective and offers a wide variety of ways to handle about every situation that can arise throughout a coaching career. I especially recomend this book for young coaches just getting into the profession. I wish I would have read this when I first broke into coaching. Coaching is often stereotyped as practice and game management alone, but as people who do it for a living know there is much more to it than that, and this book does an excellent job of generating some good ideas and philosophies about handling the job.

Not Systematic, But Quite Helpful

Because of the title, I was expecting a more methodical treatment of coaching: job descriptions, basic expectations, evaluations, etc. But what it lacked in organization, the author made up for in his "homespun" wisdom. He obviously has a lot of insights into coaching from years of experience. Using broad brush strokes about strategy, motivation, relationships, and philosophy, I think the author captures the heart of coaching. Excellent book for coaches with various years of experience. I would've rated the book five stars if he was more methodical.

He is somewhat verbose in his writing, and the book would benefit from a dose a Reader's Digest type editing. He makes valid points about the rise of coaching as a model for encouraging change. There is a whole life coaching movement in progress, I guess in reaction to disenfranchisement with psychotherapy. If you want to wade through the many detailed illustrations it is worth the read.
