Great survey of how India has developed

This book provides a thorough account of the colonial affects that India went through to shape is modern economy. The first two chapters are broken up into agricultural development of the period and the industrial development of the period. It clearly shows that there was subsistence agriculture but industrial scale was struggled to be achieved. This book is very fine economic analysis and while having the common methods of econometrics it does not become bogged down in them so it can be understood by those without a mathematical background. If you do have one though you will find some extra goodies within the book. The last chapter looks at how the countries economy developed between the 1920's to the 1970's and focuses on the struggles India faced once it was free of colonial domination. Overall this is a very thorough account and one worth taking a look at if you are interested in colonial India.

Remarkable work, but not for beginners

Being a beginner myself, I can't say that I enjoyed this book as an introduction to the Egyptians. The lack of a timeline and the assumtpion by writers that the reader is accustomed to the history of Ancient Egypt makes it difficult for someone who doesn't have a proper grasp of the ancient Egyptians' era to enjoy the reading. However, the portrait it gives of the various social groups which made up the Egyptian world is quite remarkable and can be enriching for any reader, even the unexperienced ones.

This book is presented beautifully with the side by side English and Arabic Text. The print is beautiful, and for pure aesthetic value Chittick has put together a masterpiece. This is Islam at its best and a chance to peer into the minds of one of Islams most enligthened and undervalued philosophers. Sadras Falsafah has largely been eclisped by the works of the greats but many scholars of Islam are beginning to explore his work in earnest.. Treat yourself or one you love to this great book.

Unlike most of the rah-rah books published in the HR area, this book is based on real research in Japanese and American companies. I don't agree with all of it, but it is interesting, insightful, and original. I would urge all HR professionals, corporate or consultant, to have a look at this book and see what we can (still) learn from the Japanese.

Women's Hand Made Clothing of the Holy Lands: Valuing Culture and Creativity

This is a very interesting direct and informative book steeped with information about the historical women's garb of the Holy Lands. Anyone studying textiles, women's studies, art history and religion, as well as those interested in sewing technique would find this book highly informative. Particularly enjoyable to me, were the beautiful color photographs as well as the descriptions of the parts of the clothing and the fact that each region had a type of dress specific to it. I hope that high quality images on CD or slides of each of the outfits shown along with details of the cloth will soon be available for educational use. As we all know it is of paramount importance to preserve the creativity of each and every culture in our world today because so many cultures are being destroyed by conflict. Iman Saca and Maha Saca deserve much commendation in their role in preserving the historical clothing of the Palestinian women of the Holy Lands.

A well written book on a very important episode of Bangladesh. With appropriate reference, this book elaborates the events and analyzes the events carefully. Of course one may argue that the author uses leftist methods or portrays the events in leftist observations. However you cannot totally deduct the presence of the historian himself from the equation which he is laying out. One problem - the author uses long sentences, reminiscent of the old Indian English writing style, and the reader grapples with the meaning at the end of the long sentence. Thats irritating.

The Most Comprehensive Book of its Kind

This is the most comprehensive introductory text on Southeast Asian History that I have come across in many years. Despite there being several survey books such as Mary Somers Heidhues' Southeast Asia - A Concise History an in-depth examination of the political and/or economic history of the Southeast Asia is much appreciated as a pedagogical tool. Owen's compilation is different from most because of its comprehensive and balanced approach. It is my opinion that the collection does well in capturing the essence of the region's multiple dimensions. From colonialism to globalization this book guides you through the complexity of the region that we begin to get by reading Heidhues' `A Concise History.' Along the same lines, editors and writers comprehend how hard it is to amalgamate the scholarly energies of eight authors of different generational situations and yet come up with a consistent and accessible book - a book on the histories of ten nation-states that have complex and interrelated narratives. The writers, in particular - Owen, should be applauded for accomplishing this Herculean task in less than four years after commencement. The book itself is the metaphor of the "unity in diversity" that is Southeast Asia. The writers are self reflective of the ever-changing dynamics not just of Southeast Asia but the ever-changing perspective of the region as well and this volume is "a fresh look at modern Southeast Asian History", deliberately as a "shorter more accessible text for the twenty-first century" (p. iv). The book is arranged into 37 chapters in five parts. The editor's aim is to map out the "processes of historical transformation" as well as to reveal the "chronological narratives of events" unfolding across time and space (p. xi). Despite its omissions and errata it is still arguably one of the most comprehensive works of its kind.

Professor Sang's book makes original and insightful observations concerning feminism, gender and sexuality in greater Chinese culture. Significant archival research on texts ranging from early European sexology to modern journalism combines with close reading of prominent authors from Taiwan and China in this unique volume. Highly recommended to anyone who wishes to understand how ideas such as lesbianism and homosexuality were transplanted from West to East, and how they have evolved in modernity.

A wonderful look into the Imperial Court.

There are, regrettably, few books that touch upon the intricacies of the Byzantine Imperial Court, that pinnacle of splendor that awed emissaries from all four corners. Fortunately however, the books that we do have certainly do a terrific job at detailing the particulars of the system. Gilbert Dagron's book touches especially upon the Imperial Office of Byzantium, and does a spectacular job at doing so, explaining the odd concept of 'caesaropapism' that to Enlightenment scholars defined the Byzantine court. He writes detailed descriptions of imperial ceremony, and gives wonderful accounts of the evolution of the imperial concept from Constantine the Great onwards. Included is a gorgeous diagram of the Imperial palace, which is reason to buy this book. Certainly a necessity for any serious Byzantophile.
