As a great-great-great grandson of A.J. Drexel, it was a pleasure to read this book and to learn about my famous ancestors. It is crazy to think that many of his progeny have a difficult time balancing their checkbooks today. Before this book, my knowlege of the Drexels had been limited to family lore.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading Dan Rottenberg's informative book The Man Who Made Wall Street. The book contains all there is to know about the wise and amazingly successful nineteenth century financier Anthony Drexel and the profound role he played as a mentor to the young J. Pierpont Morgan. I especially enjoyed reading about financial systems and processes in nineteenth century America that author Rottenberg describes so well in his new book.

"The Man Who Made Wall Street" is exceptionally written. Not an esoteric financial biography, yet deep enough for an intellectual discussion. Within the folds of 200 pages, you get a sense of the real person behind the financial machine. It is a brilliant biographical account of the leading figure in the financial world of the nineteenth century. There are many things you can take from this book. For me, it revealed that even 'starving' artists can find creative ways to make it and that there is often more to the person who chooses to remain behind the scenes.

Indispensable reference work about the Nuremburg Trial
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2001-02-06
"Entertaining" and "fun to read" are not the usual descriptions applied to books like this heavily footnoted, two volume set. But this work is very enjoyable to read, despite its comprehensive and well-documented scope. David Irving will not be pleased. Mr. Sprecher effortlessly moves through the origins of the Military Tribunal conducting the trial, the 4 counts under which the defendants are tried, the defendant individuals, and the defendant government organizations. The prosecution cases against all of these are presented in volume I, and the defendants' cases are presented in volume II, followed by the judgement and aftermath.

Mr. Sprecher's presentation is a summary of each case presented by each prosecutor (or defense attorney), quasi-day-by-day, interspersed with personal observations, observations from other people such as psychologists who interacted with the defendants, and also provides defendant reactions to certain witnesses/documents during the trial. Highly informative, highly entertaining. Mr. Sprecher also provides pointers to follow-on sources, if you wish to do more research. An invaluable work.

One nit to pick, however: there are so many mispellings and typos in this work that one wonders if the publishers had editors go through the book prior to publishing it. Although the writing is first rate, the production work is second or third rate.

Vital road map

I first met the author in 1968, while I was still at Uni. Several years later I learned of his earlier life at Nuremburg. Now, I have found use in his having put down a summary of his work at Nuremburg. Mr. Sprecher has written a great reference work for anyone who might wish to pursue the evidence of Buchenwald, Treblinka, etc., rather than the dramatic stories we've often seen in film or read in novels. All human rights lawyers who are today looking for precedents to help support their arguments will find this is a thorough and excellently organised sourcebook. Non-lawyers need not worry--the language is quite readable, and while the text often refers to evidence, it nonetheless contains enough detail for the gruesome-minded.

Comprehensive coverage of war crimes trial & holocaust
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 1999-02-19
This book discusses in considerable detail the trial before the first International Military Trial in Nuremberg in 1945 and 1946. From contemporaneous documents, Drexel Sprecher discloses the planning of aggressive wars by Nazi Germany which eventually resulted in the deaths of nearly 30 million people. Sprecher describes the evolution of the numerous concentration camps and the genocide of more than six million Jews and one-half million Gypsies. Though he was a prosecutor, Sprecher presents the first complete account of the defenses made on behalf of the 22 defendants at the trial. He also sets forth the findings of the International Military Tribunal concerning the guilt and innocence of the defendants. The book is an important source for reference by the several international tribunals which have been established by the United Nations to deal with recent war crimes and civil crimes involving the murder of large numbers of civilians. Inside the Nuremberg Trial is well organized into 122 chapters, each with many subsections. This organization makes it possible to find virtually any topic concerning the Nazi regime and the holocaust and how the Nazi leaders were brought to justice at Nuremberg.

Gorgeous Galveston

I grew up going to Galveston and have always loved this strange city. This book does a wonderful job of capturing the architecture that made Galveston unique. Clayton is definitly the definitave Galveston architect, he shaped the style of the city. Galveston was so lucky to have had him as their preeminant architect. I loved the historic pictures in the book and the text was facinating, I learned a great deal about a subject I thought I knew much about. I urge anyone who visits Houston to make it their mission to go take in Galveston and take this wonderful book with you.

Few people have shaped the face of Galveston and Houston as much as architect Nicholas Clayon. This book compiles the architect's works in Galveston during the boom of the Gilded Isle. This invaluable resource is filled with photographs and renderings of Clayton's projects, both commercial and residential. While many of his buildings remain, many more have been lost and this book helps recreate Galveston during Clayton's time. It also includes information on other architcts who were Clayton's contemporaries. A must for anyone interested in Galveston, architecture and how one was shaped by the other through Clayton's vision.

Excellent for adult self-study
Helpful Votes: 13 out of 14 total.
Review Date: 2006-03-17
My goal is to master the algebra that I found so troublesome as a junior high student. As an adult self-learner, I recommend this book highly. Although the illustrations and writing style are pitched at a 12 to 17 year old, I found the information presented clearly and in an easy-to-understand format. For example, the importance of the Pythagorean Theorem is emphasized and then beautifully reinforced with numerous sample problems, worked-out in great detail. Also, the treatment of "completing the square" is the best I have yet encountered. Finally, the author's philosophy of education coincides with my own, namely: difficult material can and should be presented simply as opposed to the all too frequent, presenting simple concepts in an absurdly convoluted and impossible to comprehend manner.

Not a Thorough Text, but Great Explanations
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2007-11-12
This book has very clear and concise explanations that give readers a real understanding of what's going as opposed to just teaching the steps of algebra. The material is very digestible, too. It's written in a pleasant, informal style with brief introductions to topics followed by question and answer format explanations.

My only caveat is that it's not, nor does it claim to be, a thorough guide to Algebra. It's more of a helpful supplement or a great springboard for a class or a more thorough book. This might deter some people who only only want to buy one book for self-study, but many of the explanations of basic concepts in this book are the clearest I've read.

As another reviewer said, this book is aimed at young teens, but it's great for anyone. It's not dumbed down or embarrassing for an adult to read. I'm a returning adult student studying to be a math teacher, and this book has helped me clarify a lot of my own ideas about how to teach this stuff.

Learning Algebra "using this book" is Hard!

Review Date: 2006-11-03
If you are learning algebra for the very first time, this is not the book to use. There are not enough examples in the book to help you really understand the concept at hand. It is very confusing at times. The authors try to add a little humor in the book which is very annoying. Overall it is not a bad book if you have a strong background in math and want to brush up on your skills.

Since my son started using BeeStar online math, he often asks questions about math problems. They are more and more challenging to me. This book came in as a big help. Its friendly question and answer format makes it very easy to use. The answers are insightful and presented in an elegant and simple manner that makes otherwise hard-to-explain concepts easy. It not only teaches the conventional math, but also gives you the context and the thoughts behind the principles. My son's math sense is improved significantly since I used this invaluable book. We love it.

Suffering from pre-algebra anxiety? I prescribe Dr.Math

Dr. Math Gets You Ready for Algebra contains answers to some pithy questions.

ýWhat is algebra?ý The answer starts out: ýAlgebra is like arithmetic, but in algebra some of the numbers have names instead of values.ý

As another example, ýIt makes no sense to me why someone would replace a number with a letterý signed Carissa. The answer is in part ýYouýre doing something a little like algebra whenever you use a pronoun. You could have written this: It makes no sense to Carissa why someone would replace a number with a letterý

Or how about: ýAn algebraic expression is like a word or phrase, and an equation is like a sentence.ý

A successful textbook is easy to TEACH from because it has lots of exercises, and plenty of extra padding in case there isnýt quite enough useful content to fill the entire semester. Reading a successful textbook is often like eating sawdust. In contrast, Dr. Math Gets You Ready for Algebra is easy to LEARN from. It is not necessary to read it cover to cover. Instead, I heartily recommend that you keep this book in your medicine cabinet, secure in the knowledge that if your pre-teen comes home with a questions about pre-algebra, you wonýt be left with a splitting headache.

This is an interesting book to read through and gives clears information on the logic of proving or using various theorems. Information is separated into chapters on circles, triangles, quadrilaterals, etc. How much you will enjoy this book is probably dependent on how you want to use it. If you have a specific question you need help answering, it may not be of use to you unless you have time to skim through the appropriate chapter, and then you may or may not be lucky and find it. It is not intended to be a text and doesn't necessarily progress in that structured, complete form. It is a fun, math "read" with nice diagrams and clear explanations.

very informal pedagogy
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2006-07-05
Drexel University has been putting out a series of Dr Math books, with this being one of the latest. It has that trademark cheerful, breezy style that is meant to engage a recalcitrant primary school student. Or perhaps even a high school student. Though the material seems rather basic for high school.

Students who are already into maths won't need a book like this. But the forced informality and cartoony aspect is thought to be more likely to attract students with little interest or ability in maths.

The material here is Euclidean geometry, in 2 and 3 dimensions. Needless to say, the level of rigour in the proofs in minimal. But enough is given to provide a logical framework.
