Great resource for home & small group therapy

This is a very complete guide to using swiss balls (also known as therapy balls or gymnastic balls). The exercises are grouped by skill with the goals of the exercise clearly described. The suggested modifications for children with disabilities are also very helpful. Though the book is clearly targeted at school phys ed programs, we found it very easy to use at home with all our children.

This book of exercises for kids ... and adults in fact... on the ball, is exceedingly well presented. The explanations are precise and easily followed. The illustrations are equally as valid.
HOWEVER... the book is intended for use in therapy/gym or other applications and here the problem lies! The first time I opened my book to use it, the binding released and a cascade of pages flew out like confetti- very large confetti all over the place.
I phoned the London agent and no help was forthcoming from them. In fact they were not courteous!
Is thisa problem with my book only - a dud? Or is the general binding not safe?
Sincerely,

Jennifer Lewkowski OTR

Mandatory for your basketball CLIENTS to read.

Optimum Performance Training: Basketball is a tough book to review. From the viewpoint of someone who's a NASM Performance Enhancement Specialist, I was expecting a more thorough approach on how to train NBA players. I didn't receive that with this book. However, Optimum Performance Training is a tremendous tool that the NASM trainer should give their basketball clients to minimize the 'buying in' process. Enhance yor credibility with this one.

This book is excellent for the general population and fitness professionals. It is easy to follow and so functional. The workouts are fun and produce great results! I am a physical therapist assistant and have been a personal trainer for 12 years and love all of NASM's resources. Caroline San Juan and Mike Clarke are wonderful!!

Great help in tournament planning

Review Date: 2006-11-10
Very handy source for competition planning. Within a week of purchase we held a 14 team round robin that was much easier to set up with the book's guidance.
Our tournaments generally conform to the number of teams that show up, so a reference that allows very flexible formats is appreciated by the event co-ordinator

Excellent resource for Tournament Directors
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 2000-04-01
Organizing Successful Tournaments is a great book for any budding tournament organizers or directors to build a library upon. John Byl does a very nice job of defining and discussing the various types of tournament, and how each one may or may not apply to the needs of the organizers. Included worksheets make this job even more simplistic and go a long way towards making the tasks of the tournament director less stressful. If there is any area that this book did not cover it would be that Mr. Byl focused mainly upon sporting tournaments instead of also including more game oriented events, such as cards, chess and the like. However, the tips, information, planning and worksheets make this book appicible to almost all events with very little alteration. A very nice job, and highly recommended!

Still useful after all these years...

This is the only book of its kind, and one badly in need of updating and revision because it was published so long ago. Winters offers a historical overview of intercollegiate athletics in the community colleges, tracing the evolution of the NJCAA and the split of the California community colleges to form their own athletic association. Most significantly, the book offers a historical roster of community/junior college alumni who went on to Olympic and professional sports careers. Much more could be done today to add to and fill in gaps in this work, but this is the single most significant piece of historical research ever published on community college sports and the thousands of great athletes produced by two-year schools nationwide.

I've just started co-coaching a small club in Kinsale, Co. Cork. I'm a competitive swimmer and knew what I wanted to get across, but not how. John Leonard's book has really made a difference. I'm now structuring sessions in a useful way and I know I'm communicating better with the swimmers. I shall be introducing his suggestions about setting objectives and using a bulletin board when we start training again after Easter. I'm confident that my swimmers will benefit. Thanks John.

Good for summer swim teams

I did not realize from the description that the book was aimed at summer teams and people who know very little about swimming. It is a good beginning book but was not particularly helpful to me as I wanted information for a high school team.

Title Over-Promises -- Book Under-Delivers
Helpful Votes: 28 out of 28 total.
Review Date: 2007-01-10
I read this book with high hopes. It is a good and effective introduction to distance running, but much of the book appears to be generic material that would apply to anyone who is just starting a running program. I expected much more age-specific commentary on the unique needs and demands of runners in their 40s, 50s, 60s, etc. Although there was a little bit of this, the impression I got was that much of the book consisted of "filler" and generic introductory material to running.

Beyond the advice that more "mature" runners take it easy, integrate walking into their workouts and run on alternate days -- sound advice all-- there is not a whole lot of advice that applies uniquely to older runners. This is not a bad book, but I did not believe that the glossy content fully delivered on the promise implied in its title.

Read this book. Keep on running. Be more knowledgeable. Improve or start running/walking today.

This book was given to me as a retirement gift by another runner. I retired June 1, 2007 at the age of 67. This book plus more time for reading and exercise have already resulted in improved running performance.

I'd been hoping to find a book written for older runners for a long time, but hadn't found one. This book definitely fills that void even if you've reached your 40s, 50s, 60s or 70s as a non-runner. Fortunately for me, I started running in my 30s and hope to continue for as many additional years as possible.

I've already been previleged to see as many as 5 grandchildren participate in the same high school cross country meet and to have run in local 5K races with all of them as well as with their parents.

This book provides me with a lot more knowledge and incentive to keep on running. It gives me additional hope that perhaps there could even be a 4 generational family run sometime in my future!

In summary, if you want to stay fit and healthy while adding years to your life, "Running until You're 100" is for you!

Susan Wilson sets out a comprehensive, well-thought-out plan for helping girls build a foundation to become active and stay active throughout life. Excellent insights into how girls learn and play differently from boys. I was even able to understand why I personally did poorly in sports as a child and why it has taken me another 15 years to overcome that and become active as an adult. A must-read for anyone interested in coaching girls.

As the director of the Attachment Living Institute(http://www.attachmentliving.bizland.com) we found that the ideas, programs, and principles of Susan Wilson's book, Sports Her Way, were entirely compatible with our mission. As the mother of a young boy, the information also works with him, so even if you are not the parents of a girl, you'll find this information to be rewarding, useful, and instructive.

When The Rules Fail To Come Into Play
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-05-25

Author Robin Lester chronicles the program - a national power from 1892-1939 - which captured a pair of national titles and seven Big Ten Conference (Western Conference) championships, along with having the first Heisman Trophy winner - halfback Jay Berwanger, 1935 - before the university abandoned the sport from 1940-1962.

And there is the larger-than-life coaching icon, Amos Alonzo Stagg, who was at the helm of the program from 1892-1932, who oversaw the grand success, while shaping the game through a number of revolutionary innovations and in the forefront of organizing the Big Ten Conference.

But as the last several years proved to be tough on the gridiron for Stagg, the seven seasons under his successor, Clark Shaughnessy, were a struggle on the field and off, as a series of digressions - that could have easily been pulled from today's sports pages or magazines - ultimately doomed the program.

While there were great victories over the years, the collapse of the team is a timeless tale of trying to play the game without following the rules.

College football: Same problems today as in its infancy
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 1999-02-28
Problems facing college football programs today include paying players, questionable player eligibility, and the fact that the bottom line is money-money-money. This book shows that these same problems were a factor in the development, rise, and fall of one of the pioneer college football programs.

Book gives insight into the history of the University of Chicago football program. Book focuses on the policy behind opponent scheduling, maintaining the eligibility of marginal students, and the issues of money-money-money. Good review of Stagg's career at the school, where he was viewed as the most important figure at the university for most of his tenure. Fine review of the decision to discontinue the sport, the first school from a major conference to do so.
