Rooted in the forest-abridged version

Review Date: 2004-01-17
This book is the perfect introduction for those fellow Drew-ids who would like to know more about the history of our Alma Mater. The authors take the reader back to the 1770's, to the plot of land known as the "Forest" by local inhabitants of the town that would become Madison, NJ. Tracing the history of the area and the university through many photographs. Cunnigham and
Diverio, provide information in concise, easy to read prose. For those alums who would like more in-depth background, you should go to Cunningham's recently revised version of Rooted in the Forest. With either tome, you will gain an appreciate for the wonderful educational institution we attended.

Glad I Stumbled Across This Book

What an informative book for any baseball fan of any age. I had no idea how college baseball influenced Major League Baseball. Thanks to this book, now I know. I would recommend this book to any person who enjoys baseball. The focus is on Notre Dame's contributions to baseball, but it also shares other colleges' contributions, too. It's full of interesting facts and features. I'm glad I stumbled across it and read it. It's a good read for any sports lover.

Great Photos

This is an interesting compilation of photos taken through the years at SIU Carbondale. I got this as a gift for my Dad who is an alumni of SIU, he enjoyed looking through it, though there are very few pictures from his time at the school (late seventies through early eighties). If you are looking for a detailed history of the school, this is not what you want. This book is strictly photos and captions, albeit good ones. Overall this makes a nice gift for a SIU alumni.

Great Gift for an Incoming St. Lawrence Student

I bought this book as a gift for a student of mine who is going to St. Lawrence University next year. He appreciated the gift as a way to get to know his new college. The book has more photos than words but it is still interesting and I suspect gets more interesting as one learns about the college.

While the name Arcadia Publishing may not be a household word, many readers are familiar with their style without realizing it. Arcadia Publishing is the company which has put out a prodigious collection of local history books since the early 1990s about all parts of the country. They are particularly well known for their Images of America series, which each focus on a particular city, town or region and include numerous vintage black and white photographs with small amounts of commentary to accompany them. Arcadia now has a number of other similar lines following the same basic vintage photos with slender commentary on a variety of special or localized interests, including postcard histories of a particular place and corporate histories, among others.

Arcadia now has a similar series called "Images of Sports" that follow the basic model used in other series. This series features books in a variety of American sports, and includes about a dozen books on football history, particularly the history of specific college football programs. These books include histories of such schools at Harvard, Yale, Michigan State, Auburn, Nebraska, Northwestern and others, with the most recent (as of this writing) a book on Oregon State University football.

Dearest to my heart in college football, however, is the University of Wisconsin, which is featured in this entry in the Images of Sports series. I started going to Badger games as a child and had season tickets for three years while attending school there during the Dave McCain era of the early 1980s, when Al Toon, Tim Krumrie and others led the Badgers back to postseason bowl game play for the first time since the early 1960s. No matter what era of Wisconsin football is of most interest to the reader, however, this new book will bring back many happy memories. Like other Arcadia books, this book features a gold mine of wonderful old black and white photos which in this case date back to the 1890s and go through the early 2000s, and features a good balance of shots from throughout Wisconsin football history. The book also features commentary from Dave Anderson, which sometimes is a bit too idiosyncratic and focused on his own experiences, but overall a useful addition. Here, too are useful lists for Badger fans, such as award winners, the records of all UW coaches through 2004, and more. But like other Arcadia books, this books is all about the pictures, and wonderful ones they are. I particularly enjoyed the collections of program covers through the years. Any Wisconsin Badgers football fan or Wisconsin history buff will enjoy seeing them, and even people who are neither may well enjoy this pleasant, slender paperback.

I purchased this book for an entering student at the University, who lives in Raleigh, NC. The purpose was to give him a picture of the beginnings of the school in Wake Forest, NC. The book gives a really good history of the school, its student body and the move to Winston-Salem some fifty years ago. I recommend it to anyone who has an interest in the school.

The only things you'll get out of this book that you may not find easily on the internet are the pictures.

Also, I was disappointed that the author was not a Cornellian.

You can finish this book in one sitting and not because it's well written or particularly interesting. If you extract just the words from this book it will not fill a pamphlet.

Must read for the Lynah Faithful

This book is a pleasant summary history of Cornell Big Red Hockey. There is a chapter for each of the six head coaches of the last sixty years, a chapter about hockey on Beebe Lake, and a final chapter on the Lynah Rink experience.

The book is missing two things: color pictures and a summary of team year-to-year results. Lynah Rink has banners honoring the NCAA championships, NCAA appearances, ECAC championships, and Ivy League championships. I would like to see that summary in the final pages of the book.

Nice quick read.

Nice read that brings me back to the Cornell days.

Good information on the history of cornell hockey. Pictures are great.

Minor gripes.
Not enough recent pictures.
All pictures are in black and white.
All pictures are small.

Although the history of U of M's baseball team is very interesting . This book is not. Please save your money and don't buy this literary disaster. If I was adler's writing professor, he would get a about a 20%. Hence 1 out of 5 stars.
