Great book - just missing all the PEER-REVIEWED scientific references

Mr. Fitzgerald is a very knowledgeable athlete and trainer, and indeed an excellent writer. The book is filled with the best running advice I have seen in a while. I am a former triathlete, now a daily exerciser who runs, does weight training, and yoga.

My only reason for not giving the book 5 stars is that as a scientist (Professor with a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering), the statements throughout the book where the author says, "from the science ...", or "studies show...", the PEER-REVIEWED references for these studies should be cited in those locations, or at a minimum listed at the end of each chapter with reference numbers throughout the text. I have access to the best scientific reference databases and can look up the papers mentioned with a bit of time since no authors, dates, titles or journal names are mentioned, yet it is unlikely most readers have the same access, and therefore, such references should be included in subsequent revisions.

I do want to thank Mr. Fitzgerald for (again) sharing his training expertise with the lowly runner like myself. Anything new that I learn is one more step toward a healthier life, happier running, and less wear-and-tear on this 51 year old female's body. My husband is benefitting a great deal from this book as well. Many thanks for a well-written work.

This book lives up to its title! Buy it!

I just finished reading The Cutting-Edge Runner. This is one of the few running books that I read from cover to cover. Many of the books out there fill half the pages with running plans, this book focuses on providing great useful content. I'm training for the Richmond Marathon, and have already incorporated a few of Matt's suggestions into my program. The book is truely on the cutting edge, Matt provides the latest concepts on how to run faster, longer and healthier.

Great synthesis of recent research, an easy read

I used to do triathlons, but now I figure I'm primarily a runner. I just turned forty, and I am on a quest to get my 5k time from the 19 minute range down to 18 minutes. I figure if I can do that I'll start winning or placing in my new age category; that's my way of dealing with middle age and mid-life crises and so on.

I typically read a couple running books a month, looking for ways to improve, and this book really stands out. The author cites numerous studies and relates his personal experience in incorporating new discoveries into his training. If you subscribe to Runners World, you're probably familiar with most of these advances, but it's all thoughtfully considered here in a way that lends itself to reading cover to cover.

A great book, with a SERIOUS CAVEAT

This is an absolutely amazing, and probably most cutting-edge book on running you can find on today's book market (summer 2006), and a large part of its appeal is the fact that the content and the author's numerous recommendations are based on recent, serious, and carefully analyzed research.

This means, alas, that the book is VERY technical, and often assumes that the reader will understand without further need for explanations some fairly arcane terminology in the areas of sports medicine, biomechanics, and physiology. Admittedly, the author makes a good-faith effort to explain some of the more complex issues, but sometimes even that is not quite enough for this reader.

Although it will be a good, informative, and worthwhile read for all those interested in running, the recommendations and advice will be of use mostly to (and are almost exclusively directed at) serious, competitive, and very experienced runners.

I have to admit that since I focus on running as only a small part of a basic general fitness program, i.e., I have completely NO interest in running competitively, or in training for a marathon :) - most of this info. is not for me. Still, for those more focused on running competitively, it is probably a very valuable, cutting-edge read.

I hope that at some point the author will take the time and write a book based on the same well-informed sources, but directed at a more casual runner, and general reader without sports-medicine background like me.

It's hard to write a review without it sounding like an advertisement...This book dispels many myths of youth training like the need for early sports specific exercises. It covers exercises for all phases of youth development from ages 5 to 20. His advice, backed by world class achievement, can help you resist the pressure to put children through adult style training exercises and at the same time properly train children for future world class competition. I have compared his recommendations against many sources and have become convinced that they are correct. This book is a must have for Directors of Youth Coaching and Physical Development.

On a more serious note - it shows that the only way to improve is to train. It's informative and backed-up by some of the world's greatest runners. As Mr. Tanser says: Train Hard, Win Easy. If you are a "goal oriented" distance runner, you'll love this book. Most of us can forget trying the workouts listed here but hey, we can dream! This is a great thing to reread when one wants to get fired up about one's training. I really turn to this book when I am tempted to waste more money on fads, new gadgets, etc. :-)

The formula for Kenyan success in distance running? It is no secret, really. You will find about what you expect. Still, this book is worth reading.

This book also provides a few brief glimpses of Kenya's culture and of the various sub-cultures within.

I expected this to be a book, which would reveal all the secrets of Kenyan runners and take my own running to another level. I was a bit disappointed at first but when I started reading it more I found it very inspiring. It teaches you how crazy actually the Kenyan runners are with their training. This book does give training examples of what the Kenyans do but they are more like just "samples" of the training and it's hard to get a big picture. If you want to learn the secrets of Kenyan runners, forget it -- there are no secrets. These guys just train so hard that it would be a wonder if they wouldn't be world class runners. If you want find out what it takes to be a world class runner, this book could be your choice.

Touchdown! This book drives the length of the field to take the reader on a journey through small towns and big cities who live and die for football. The tradition of Ohio High School Football is second to none and Butler's brilliant narration mixed in with interviews from coaches, players, parents and fans captures what Friday night in the fall is all about - a social gathering of sorts where football is the main focus. Rothchild's photography allows the reader to experience every facet of Friday night football from the star quarterback to the mom selling programs to raise money for the band.

Across Many Fields is a must for anyone who loves high school football.

I hesitated to buy this book because I had read some negative things about it on some Ohio high school internet sites. Then I browsed a copy in a local bookstore and realized how foolish I was to wait. This is one of the finest books on high school football I've ever seen (and I own many).

Across Many Fields is about football with capital "F". Having read it now (which I suspect some critics have not), I realize the authors were looking for the whole picture and that people unhappy with it were upset because their team wasn't represented. Well, this book isn't about one team or another. It's about all the teams in Ohio that strap on the helmets each season and all the people who support these young men (and a few women).

The pictures are tremendous, glorious and the writing is smooth and creative. For any football fan, for anyone who has relished the crisp autumn air on a Friday night in a local football stadium, this book is a can't miss. You'll be transported!

While Across Many Fields chronicles the 2001 Ohio high school football season, this book is to be enjoyed by all -- regardless of the reader's geographic location. Across Many Fields goes well beyond statistics and X's and O's to explore the very essence of high school football; whereas a Friday Night Lights exposes the darker side of a big-time high school program, AMF is a celebration of the sights, sounds, athletes, and communities that make autumn evenings special for so many. From big-time rivalries to small town tradition, this book explores high school football with a depth and passion that make it a captivating read.

Handsomely photographed and insightfully written, Across Many Fields is a timeless tribute to a uniquely American institution.

I purchased this book to help with my bowling, since as a novice bowler,
I was dismayed by my embarrassing performance when bowling with friends.
I would bowl a strike and then have a string of gutter balls.

I found this book really helpful, not just for bowling, but for achieving excellence
in other sports. I was able to apply the lessons to other challanging areas in my life.

The book gives a comphrehensive overview of this incredibly popular sport. The writers have laid out a step by step mental
plan of action that accounts for most contigencies and can used when someone has to psychologically prepare
onself to perform at a high level.

The use of acronyms such as RALLY ( react, accept, learn, lean, yes )and the examples
of positive self talk particularly useful.

The evaluation forms are informative and the exercises are easy to do. I would recommend this book to all coaches and players who want to take their teams to the next level. It is also very good for parents to help them understand the role and the need for the role that their child plays on the team. It will be interesting to see how this affects the play of our team that traditionally plays well against really good teams, but then reduces the level of its play to not so great teams.

Review Date: 2008-04-21
For amateur "weekend warrior" coaches such as myself this is a topic that is far to often barely touched on if talked about at all. Telling kids to concentrate, focus and be mentally tough without teaching it like any other skill is like giving them a bat with no instruction and telling them to hit. Some will pick it up better than others due to their own make-up but all can get much better with a coach teaching them. The mental game can be taught as a skill the same as any physical skill we teach them.

This book is one that has the authentic "been-there-done-that" feel to it. It's well organized with great real world examples and has multiple lists at the end of each topic on how to make our athletes aware of the mental game and how to practice getting better at it.

This is a book you will read and re-read if you're truly interested in being the best coach you can be. It's one of those books where you can just open to any page and pick up a great idea or tip.

My mother attended OU when Bud Wilkinson was coach. My brother attended OU when Barry Switzer was coach. I attended when Gary Gibbs was coach (not a highlight of OU football history

The book contains great "Did You Know" boxes within the text with a short factoid. It also contains things ancillary to actual on-the-field play, but nonetheless important: e.g. the perennial game-day hangout, O'Connell's, and super-fan Cecil Samara. I also got a big kick out of the chapter on "The Rivals: The Accursed Teams of Texas and Nebraska." I would have liked to have seen more quotes from former players about their feelings for TX and NE - to stir the pot more.

There is a lot of information to digest. So I appreciate the author/publisher including some easy-to-read call-outs in the book, like actual diagram of the Wishbone and the Right 53 Veer Pass, and a full win-loss record from 1895-2007. Don't forget to take the 50-question quiz at the end of the book to test your knowledge of Sooner football.

This will make a great gift for the Sooner football fans in your life. A great read that will make you appreciate the storied history even more.

Jim's effort with the research and interviews really shines through as you absorb each page. Absolutely the best book I've read in years.

Wow!! This is a book for not only EVERY Sooner football fan, but EVERY college football fan! Fletcher takes us back to the beginning of the program and makes it exciting from the outset. The interviews with the legends are phenomenal and the little tidbits of history throughout were a wonderful addition. If you are intrigued as to how a football dynasty is created and stories from behind the scenes, you will LOVE this book.

As a long time Sooner fan and alum, I was thrilled with this book. The detail (like the Steve Davis and Barry Switzer interviews) was worth the price of the book alone. I'll be referring to this one again and again.

Reading this book was very refreshing because Mr. Willis has also woven his empathetic experience into the book. It is nice to see a person write both from his experience and from his academic learning. I appreciated his dedication page too, and I think that this book would benefit most orthopedic patients.

Most MD's won't take the time, or they don't comprehend how to explain what Willis does, as to why certain exercises or cardiovascular training programs are so good for Preventing and Healing people's injuries!

Willis' writing style made it an interesting, enjoyable read and because of that, this book is a winner!

Solid introduction for layperson or Students!

This method of providing information, clearly reflects the knowledge gained from injuries (Dr Willis) has personally sustained and helps the reader identify, recognize and make decisions about how to recover from a variety of joint traumas. The specific nature of these injuries is presented clearly and briefly.

*** 'Effective Orthopedic Rehab' is a solid introduction for the layperson, a young professional working with injured athletes or a freshman undergraduate at college studying athletic training or kinesiology.

When I learned of this book, I was skeptical and thought it might just be an ordinary "home-grown" rehab book, but IT WAS MUCH MORE! This book and the author's references promote the same components that I learned in my Master's program in Physical Therapy.

This book grew from the author's experience and his doctoral education, and THIS BOOK has SOLID ROOTS in clinically proven rehabilitative protocols. I'll recommend that many of my patients read this book which will help them understand that recovery is not a switch that they can quickly turn on. GOOD BOOK!
