If it's worthy of Kurosawa's attention, it's worthy of yours

This book reads like a wilderness adventure novel that Jack London only wishes he could write. The author's efforts to explore and map the Mongolian taiga in themselves make you feel like you're travelling to this far land and experiencing the lifestyle with him. The star of the book, however, is not the author and main character. Instead, it is the fur trapper and guide Dersu, who has lived in the wilderness for so long he understands it on a level that you, as the reader, will slowly come to appreciate and even to partially share.
Akira Kurosawa (of Seven Samurai fame) directed the movie version of Dersu Usala, and that movie is also well worth watching.

read the free report from 2000 instead of getting the book

The title itself can seem strained. The trendy, made up word 'infotech', that is used in the text as a 'cool' shorthand for information technology. Maybe indeed at some time in the future, infotech will become the accepted term. But right now, it has minimal usage. Ah yes, and then there is the 'speed of innovation'. Clearly, thought has gone into the title.
The text itself is based on a report by the authors in 2000 for the US Department of Commerce. In fact, instead of getting this book, I suggest you read that 2000 report, at technology.gov/reports/itsw/Digital.pdf. While the book has updated material, the bulk of it is unchanged from 2000.
In the 2000 report, the authors analysed anticipated demands for IT workers in the US, based on various IT labour market trends. Of course, the dot com era ended that year. Followed by deep retrenchments in IT, and a parallel growth in offshoring. In this respect, the 2000 report may actually be more useful to you than the 2005 book. Because you can now assess how accurate the authors were in 2000. If you think they are still worth reading, then perhaps get the 2005 book.

Detailed, but lacking in personal touches

This is definitely an excellent gold rush diary. It is very detailed and well-written by a man with obvious intelligence. However, compared to "The World Rushed In" it is really lacking in those personal touches that make the diary more "gripping." Dr. Lord's writing is a bit clinical in comparison, which doesn't hold the reader's attention so well when describing the more monotonous details of his journey.

The Double Traitor is an espionage novel set in the days leading to the first World War. It presents a fascinating picture of the political mindset of the day to go along with the twists and turns of the story. It was a gentler time (at least in fiction), and the prose and characters have an elegance rarely found in more modern fiction.
E Phillips Oppenheim was a prolific author, and I have enjoyed many of his novels. Another excellent book from WWI era is The Great Impersonation. Most often, Oppenheim books must be found in the dusty recesses of used book stores (or bibliofind or abebooks one the net), so it is nice to see a new printing available.

Entertaining, impressively thorough, no-nonsense chronicle highlighting the glory days and difficult periods in one of the ELCA's more progressive institutions (Located in Tacoma, WA). This is one of the few university projects that doesn't appear to sell its name or show off, but the title, apparently, gives it away. Indeed, not one of those glossy books to place on a coffee table. Yup, my alma mater. How'd you guess?

If you want to understand a real Russian soul read this book. It may seem that Leskov is critical and negative about the Russian Orthodoxy but when you finish the book you'll see how great he is in upholding the principles of a true godliness.

Creation of a Modernist Subjectivity

Here, LiPuma does an increadible job of combining analyses of local and global forces in many registers. Through his lifelong study of the Maring (in Melanesia), LiPuma questions the conventional limits of ethnography which puts the Other on the stage for inquiry. Rather, his analysis of contemporary changes (he is concerned with a period of roughly 1950-1980) occurring within the Maring community incorporates a reflexive inquiry into the agents of Western modernity, such as missionaries, health care personnel, and ethnographers (including himself). In the context of late capitalist globalization, LiPuma charts out fragmented, and indeterminate courses which Western modernist projects inevitably take in any local settings. Furthermore, this contingency of local forces becomes complicated by the tensions and heterogenous motives of the agents of modernity themselves. This type of analysis cannot be achieved in those studies which overemphasize the power of global forces (i.e., capitalism, construction of nation-states in relation to int'l arena, commodities, etc) in imposing meta-narrative aspect of social changes. Against this background, LiPuma weaves out a story within which a modern and the Other are inextricably linked and mutually constituted. In the process of this storytelling, his analysis and emphasis on the power of epistemology in shaping social changes is crucial. It seems we need more studies on how the desires and subjects are constituted in a complex web of socio-historical conjunctures, such as the one exemplified by LiPuma's eloquent work.
