The text is excellent for anyone desiring to research the various arts and performances described in the book. There are numerous photographs that enhance description, and a variey of information that helps to better envision the Pacific Arts, artists's encounters and their struggles to maintain their native arts.

Flying on the Left

Originally published before VE Day in 1945, this is an account of the birth and growth of RAF's Ferry Command, later incorporated in its Transport Command. At its inception, at a time when there were few pilots and fewer navigators with real overocean experience, and when even Pan Am and Imperial Airways/BOAC avoided the North Atlantic, it ferried Lockheed Hudsons and Consolidated Liberators from Canada to Scotland. In time, South Atlantic and Trans - African routes were added. Better facilities and airplanes, and those core personnel who had gained their experience the hard way and could pass it on, made the operations less hair raising; but never quite routine.
Between Ferry Command, the USAAF Air Transport Command and the U.S. Naval Air Transport Service, transocean flight even in northern reaches would be a daily activity long before VJ Day; and increasingly popular in civil markets not long after.
This is more a pamphlet than a book, but a good addition to any collection dealing with World War Two air transport. It would have been improved by including BOAC's wartime activities. An additional work on these was promised but, so far as I can find, never published.

I bought this book as a requirement for a college class. The book was short enough to make it easy to get through and had enough details to learn more about the region than I ever thought I would. I was impressed with the book and will keep it for future reference.

Another good Australian Centenary History

Review Date: 2002-03-09
This a well written book covering the Royal Australian Air Force
from its origins as the Australian Flying Corps in World War 1 to
2001. The author expresses forthright opinions on politicians and
on senior RAAF officers.
As regards World War 2 he emphasises the significant contribution
made by Australian aircrew to the allied bomber offensive against
Germany and stresses the very high casuality rate.
He discusses the main aircraft types used by the force.
There are good photographs of significant players and aircraft.
All in all a most interesting book

Yosemite American Indians - A great reference on Mariposa Indian wars.

Review Date: 2006-07-11
This is a great book. The best book to get your hands on is Lafayette H. Bunnell's "Discovery of the Yosemite". Try to get an original one and not a revised version. Bunnell was the only person to meet Chief Tenaya and the original Yosemite Native Americans during the Mariposa Indian wars. In that book he documents that Chief Tenaya was the founder of the Paiute Colony of Ahwahnee, that he spoke Paiute, that his band was primarily Mono Paiute and not Miwok as has been falsely written. You see in history the ones who tend to write history are those who won it or those who helped. The Miwoks assisted the Mariposa Battalion against the original Indians of Yosemite. They were the enemies of Paiutes and not trading partners as has been falsely written. Tenaya's band and the Mono Paiutes did trade with each other, because they were both Paiute bands. That is documented in Bunnell's book, but this book is a great companion of that book.

Get both.

Clear and Creative Kokugaku Study
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2004-05-16
All in all, this book both clarifies and drastically changes one's ideas about kokugaku in Japan. The exploration of what are today considered "unorthodox" kokugaku scholars is interesting and really brings to light the complexity and plurality within this "school of thought" (if one may still call it that). And the comparison of different scholars' glosses on the first part of the "Kojiki" for what it tells us about their differing agendas is a masterful method. Really fascinating.

This would easily be a five-star book if it weren't for the inconsistent editing. For some reason Tanuma Okitsugu's personal name keeps on showing up here as "Okitsuga." Annoying typos and sentences bearing traces of incomplete revision further mar what is otherwise an excellent and exemplary piece of scholarship.

Southwestern America's Ancient Past
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2002-09-15
Unlike Lister's previous book, *Pot Luck: Adventures in Archaeology*, her account here is less anecdotal and personal, but she goes into more scientific detail as she focuses in on five prehistoric Southwestern U.S. sites, namely Lowry Ruin in Colorado, Awatovi-Kawaika-a in Arizona and Kuaua, Pottery Mound and Gran Quivira in New Mexico. The prehistoric pueblo Indian time frame is from the 6th to the 13th Centuries and the conquering Spanish overlays are investigated up to the 17th Century. Archeological discovery times covered are from the 1930s to the 1960s.

College students, Native American helpers, and professional archeologists uncovered scores of embellished walls, different kinds of pottery and evidence of agricultural practices of the pueblo peoples, but conserving the finds was tricky at best and impossible at worst. Some of the most stunning finds were at Pottery Mound in the Rio Puerco in New Mexico. Wall paintings were startlingly abstract, complex and sophisticated. Shells, pottery, and gemstones not found in the area evidenced trade with Mesoamerica while pictures of fish and bison indicated exchanges with plains Indians.

The downside of these finds, the inside story of how archeologist Frank Hibben fudged on and suppressed some of the data at Pottery Mound for instance, is also chronicled by the author. At the end of her chapter on the subject, she states that "It is a pity that they are beclouded by controversy and that the original records are today beyond the reach of further scientific study."

Photos in this book are clear and intriguing. An excellent beginning and in my opinion a must-read for anyone interested in any or all of these five sites.

An enjoyable read from the late 12th century

In this entertaining volume, Scott characterizes the unrest between England and Wales in the year 1187, during the time of the Crusades. The Western Marches had not yet been subdued by English authority, and clouds of banditti continue to make inroads into English territory. Our characters are besieged in a castle that only at the moment of crisis is it put into a posture of defense to withstand the siege. A phlegmatic Fleming and his daughter form the sensible counters to the hot-blooded English family who owns the castle. Intrigues and sorcery (the product of the times), conflicts between religion, the foreign wars, infighting within the family (when a son would murder his father for his possessions) all have equal place here. A fascinating glimpse of the times, and a highly readable story make this yet another jewel in Scott's wonderful body of historical fiction.

Is this a field guide?
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2005-12-05
No, it's not and it's not supposed to be. It's a desk reference. It gives status and distribution details for the 483 species documented in Washington. Extensive data on occurrence including noteworthy records are provided for all species. Most accounts also include phenology bar graphs (sometimes broken down regionally) and a distribution map. Distribution maps show breeding, and non-breeding ranges. Some accounts also include brief habitat descriptions and additional remarks on identification, ecology and historical changes in status.

Ahead of the species accounts are several sections detailing how the book is laid out, discussions on habitat, avian conservation and "the evolution of field ornithology in Washington".

There is no doubt that wildlife specialists will find this reference useful for quick and authoritative information on what species occur and where. It is unfortunately rather skimpy on the kind ecological details that connect bird species firmly to niches within habitats. The habitat details that are provided are inconsistently applied and usually limited to generalized ecotypes and brief descriptions of nest sites. Those charged with making resource management decisions that depend on more detailed information regarding ecological requirements will be obliged to look elsewhere. Obviously, content choices were made to keep the size and cost of the book within reason, but I would have preferred less discussion on how firm the status of the species is county by county and more discussion on what attracts a bird to a habitat and how it interacts with its environment. County status is a geopolitical constraint that has almost nothing to do with bird distribution.

Avocational naturewatchers may find the county by county detail of the range maps and phenology bar graphs useful, but the minutia on occurrences will probably not be of much use to birders.
