Flying on the LeftReview Date: 2008-02-15
Between Ferry Command, the USAAF Air Transport Command and the U.S. Naval Air Transport Service, transocean flight even in northern reaches would be a daily activity long before VJ Day; and increasingly popular in civil markets not long after.
This is more a pamphlet than a book, but a good addition to any collection dealing with World War Two air transport. It would have been improved by including BOAC's wartime activities. An additional work on these was promised but, so far as I can find, never published.

Another good Australian Centenary HistoryReview Date: 2002-03-09
from its origins as the Australian Flying Corps in World War 1 to
2001. The author expresses forthright opinions on politicians and
on senior RAAF officers.
As regards World War 2 he emphasises the significant contribution
made by Australian aircrew to the allied bomber offensive against
Germany and stresses the very high casuality rate.
He discusses the main aircraft types used by the force.
There are good photographs of significant players and aircraft.
All in all a most interesting book

Clear and Creative Kokugaku StudyReview Date: 2004-05-16
This would easily be a five-star book if it weren't for the inconsistent editing. For some reason Tanuma Okitsugu's personal name keeps on showing up here as "Okitsuga." Annoying typos and sentences bearing traces of incomplete revision further mar what is otherwise an excellent and exemplary piece of scholarship.

Southwestern America's Ancient PastReview Date: 2002-09-15
College students, Native American helpers, and professional archeologists uncovered scores of embellished walls, different kinds of pottery and evidence of agricultural practices of the pueblo peoples, but conserving the finds was tricky at best and impossible at worst. Some of the most stunning finds were at Pottery Mound in the Rio Puerco in New Mexico. Wall paintings were startlingly abstract, complex and sophisticated. Shells, pottery, and gemstones not found in the area evidenced trade with Mesoamerica while pictures of fish and bison indicated exchanges with plains Indians.
The downside of these finds, the inside story of how archeologist Frank Hibben fudged on and suppressed some of the data at Pottery Mound for instance, is also chronicled by the author. At the end of her chapter on the subject, she states that "It is a pity that they are beclouded by controversy and that the original records are today beyond the reach of further scientific study."
Photos in this book are clear and intriguing. An excellent beginning and in my opinion a must-read for anyone interested in any or all of these five sites.

Is this a field guide?Review Date: 2005-12-05
Ahead of the species accounts are several sections detailing how the book is laid out, discussions on habitat, avian conservation and "the evolution of field ornithology in Washington".
There is no doubt that wildlife specialists will find this reference useful for quick and authoritative information on what species occur and where. It is unfortunately rather skimpy on the kind ecological details that connect bird species firmly to niches within habitats. The habitat details that are provided are inconsistently applied and usually limited to generalized ecotypes and brief descriptions of nest sites. Those charged with making resource management decisions that depend on more detailed information regarding ecological requirements will be obliged to look elsewhere. Obviously, content choices were made to keep the size and cost of the book within reason, but I would have preferred less discussion on how firm the status of the species is county by county and more discussion on what attracts a bird to a habitat and how it interacts with its environment. County status is a geopolitical constraint that has almost nothing to do with bird distribution.
Avocational naturewatchers may find the county by county detail of the range maps and phenology bar graphs useful, but the minutia on occurrences will probably not be of much use to birders.
