Tales of Ivan Belkin is the breaking point in Pushkin's creative work. It's the border between Sentimentalist literature and Realistic one. The characters are much deeper than they could be looked for the first time! Tales of Ivan Belkin are something about a JOKE OF GENIUS, don't you see that? They all are about things that were important for the author in this horrible autumn, 1830, when they were written. These things are family, friendship, and love. Each tale is full of love, don't you think so?

These engaging, informative profiles combine to build a history of New Zealand music for the highbrow crowd. The 14 subjects are all forthcoming and opinionated in their interviews, and the breadth is wide. Frank Gurr talks of the excitement of building a symphony orchestra from scratch after the Second World War (the weekly pay cheque was a generous £10), composer Dorothea Franchi of early discouragement playing the harp (an influence was Harpo Marx). Edwin Carr - the proudly conservative and accessible orchestral composer - is acerbic of "narrow nationalism" and recent cultural cross-pollination in music ("You don't plunder the temples," he quotes a friend), while Jack Body shrugs off accusations of exoticism. "One of the functions of art is to be outrageous, provocative, politically incorrect ... one has to learn not to become an embittered, grumpy old man. There's a few of those around. I hope that I can grow old joyful and unrepentant." Peter Scholes passionately parries criticism of the Enzso project from both classical and rock critics as "conservative and limiting"; he also describes his despair at sitting on arts council panels with such limited funds to share as "like walking into a nuclear bomb zone with a suitcase full of medicine".
It's invigorating to read such articulate opinions about music - especially for those jaded by musician interviews which are so often more about marketing - and no matter what your discipline, there is plenty here to inspire any musician.

Edited by former Washington State University History Department chair David H. Stratton, Terra Northwest: Interpreting People and Place is an anthology of scholarly essays by eleven authors discussing society, culture, and transitions in the American and Canadian northwest. From a historical assessment of "The American Indian and Freedom of Religion", to "Mexican American Street Gangs, Migration, and Violence in the Yakima Valley", to "The Mind of the Founders: An Assessment of the Washington Constitution of 1889" and much more, Terra Northwest offers detailed examinations of past events and historical trends supported by meticulous research. The resulting anthology of in-depth historical analyses is a welcome supplement to American and Canadian history shelves alike, especially recommended for college library collections.

Paul Hirt has pulled together some of the best western historians to focus on the Pacific Northwest; from Spanish attempts to settle the coast, to Hanford, irrigation, and post-war race relations. Very readable, comprehensive, and well-done. Anyone looking to understand the Pacific Northwest will enjoy this book.

Gradually the important work of Japanese literary critics is coming to be made available to Anglophone readers, and this book constitutes a milestone in that regard. Maeda Ai combines critical theoretical insights (of which I am usually suspicious) successfully with meticulous historical research and attention to detail, an alchemical mix of the abstract and the concrete that produces startlingly original and convincing results. The translators deserve appreciation for producing exceptionally high quality translations of quite challenging material.

Thinking As A Science has an excellent chapter on concentration. It also has some wonderful insights as to how we think and how we can improve our thinking. The downside of the book is that the beginning chapters are somewhat boring b/c they deal with methods of thinking that are very scientific. But once you reach the concentration chapter the book is great.

Have you ever wondered what those government sponsered scientific documents mean? Gail has read many and synthesized some so that a reader can understand what they say. Have you ever wondered about practices like "Structure Based Management" or "Managed Growth" and why anyone would be interested them? Or what they mean to you, a person who cares about forest practices. The author of this book has a heart that loves hiking in rich forest and a soul that came out of a logging family in the heart of logging country, Coos Bay, Oregon. Do you want to know what foresters, government experts, ecologists, scientists, and planners are planning? The work they are attempting in the Tillamook will be replicated into other areas if successful.

This is a biography of James Yen and his pioneering work in the vilage of China before and during communism revolution. Though the event was old, and ignored in Communist China long time, his value which has been popular outside China recently becomes recognized in the area of rural development even in China as well. This book tells how important role a man like Yen plays in the human and social development in whatever the political system is. Yen's ideology is of everlasting truth, proved also in other countries.
