Dr. Martin Haug (1827-1876) a German born Oriental scholar, spent close to 20 years, in India, studying the religion and manners and customs of the Parsis of Western India. His total learning and experiences are distilled in this book, first published in 1878. Since then the book has been reprinted and re-published several times, with revisions done to it by Edward William West, another outstanding Orientalist and a great Pahlavi language scholar. The book is one of the most readable accounts on the history of the Zarathushtrian religion and Zarathushtrian literature encompassing both Avestan and Pahlavi language literatures, and the history of the Parsis of Western India in general. Though succeeded by more informative and massive tomes on the same subjects, this is an excellent book for a beginner, who wants to know something about the Parsis in general. I wish and hope that every Parsi and Zarathuhstrian will give this book their undivided attention and will keep it as a good reference source. It would be difficult to surpass Dr. Haug's account under 476 pages. Readers should be very thankful to the University Press of the Pacific for publishing the paperback edition of this time-tested classic, so that a generation of modern Zarathushtrians can benefit from this nineteenth century account of the Parsis.

Inglis took 15 years to write this book. The book has been written in easy to read non-academic style that makes for easy access by the casual reader. I read this book with ease finding it full of useful and interesting facts. Inglis does not attempt to analyse the theory behind memory or memory representation but does allow enough material for the investigative reader to develop his or her own thesis.
In short it is a long book, but a good book and certainly one that helps to remind us that there are those that we should not forget.

There have been a great many fine books published in the last year on Lewis and Clark. One of the very best of those books is Dayton Duncan's Scenes Of Visionary Enchantment: Reflections On Lewis And Clark and richly deserves ongoing recommendation beyond the famous expedition's anniversary date. Presenting Duncan's retracing of the Corps of Discovery's route from St. Louis to the Pacific and back - four different times in the past twenty years, his travelogue commentary provides keen insights on people and places seen along the way, emphasizing why Lewis and Clark's discoveries remain so important today.

Seafaring in the Contemporary Pacific Islands

This collection of twelve original essays examines contemporary seafaring practices and the unique relationship of the islanders to the sea. The book adds a new dimension to present scholarship on the Pacific Islands by focusing on ordinary people and their attachment to the sea in the course of daily life rather than on the spectacular exploits of long-distance voyagers. Contributors to the volume examine islanders who depend on the sea for food and transportation, who paddle their canoes or fire up their outboard motors to transport copra to the local trader, whose songs and dances depict maritime themes, and for whom the sea provides a metaphor for all the vagaries of life. Geographical coverage of the book includes one Micronesian community (Enewetak), three Polynesian communities (Nukumanu, Sikaiana, and Rotuma), and four Melanesian ones (Marovo in the Western Solomons, Omarakana and Kaduwaga in the Trobriands, and Vanatinai in the Louisiade Archipelago). An essay on the Bugis of Indonesia points out the relevance of Island Southeast Asia to understanding seafaring in Oceania.--Book cover description

This book remains a classic reference for identification of tidepool organisms in southern California. Unlike many field guides, this one devotes 30 or more pages to basic oceanography (tides, currents, waves, water chemistry, etc) as it affects tidepool organisms. Other field guides include a greater number of color photos and line drawings but Hinton gives more help on identifying organisms and more explanation of their behaviors and ecological roles. He also includes a number of very entertaining anecdotes which make this book fun to read when the weather and tide aren't right for tidepooling.

My wife and I really enjoyed using this book. Walks on Capital Hill to Magnolia to Pioneer Square revealed many things that we did not take the time to notice before.
Our favorite was probably Capital Hill, it tooks us about 3.5 hours to complete and we've done it many times since.

A Prelude of Things to Come

This book is probably the most complete analysis yet made of the sexual activities of soldiers during wartime. It is a new reprint of the original, first published in 1941. Most of the data comes from World War I, and most of it was collected by the Germans.
The book first discusses the general release of sexual restraints caused by the mentality of war and by the separation of soldiers from the influence of home and family. From there it goes on to describe the various sexual activities from nearly every aspect including VD, homosexuality, brothels, genital injuries, the amatory adventure of female spies, sadism, rape and other atrocities.
The activies report here seem to be just a prelude to the much bigger World War II. Yet, as with the rest of World War I, the activities reported here seem to be much the same, just smaller, and without the organized activities later on.

Shem Pete's Alaska: The Territory Of The Upper Cook Inlet Dena'ina is an informationally impressive geographic manual that reconstructs traditional place names and maps of Alaska as drawn from the life experiences of Shem Pete and other Dena'ina and Ahtna speakers. Historic comments, vignettes, a wealth of black-and-white photographs, shaded-relief place-name maps, and more fill the pages of this meticulous and substantive recording of the close connection Dena'ina people share with the land. Shem Pete's Alaska is a very welcome addition to Native American Studies, as well as an essential acquisition for Alaskan Regional History reference collections.

This collection of fairy tales is, indeed, marvelous. It contains seven classic stories:
*Ivan Tsarevich, the grey wolf, and the firebird
*Sister Alyonushka and brother Ivanushka
*Finist the falcon
*Marya Morevna
*The white duck
*Vasilisa the beautiful
*The frog princess
While the stories are entertaining in themselves, the illustrations really deserve the most praise. Bilibin's work is reminiscent of Alfonse Mucha's Art Nouveau pieces -- possibly the best is Bilibin's painting of Vasilisa escaping from Baba Yaga's hut, carrying an enchanted skull mounted on a stick. (Light pours from the empty eye sockets; that's how Vasilisa can see to leave.)
Not to be missed by collectors or lovers of fairy tales and fantasy -- the artwork alone is worth the purchase.
