Another book I purchased as my professor wouldn't let this book leave the laboratory. Any book with Bruce McCune listed as author is an investment. This quality book is great for the field; not heavy and just the right size for a backpack. The photographs are very representative of in-field specimens in the NW - making it nice to ID a lichen without having to take it back to the lab. Having a degree in plant ID is not required for this book. The book also has a great glossary complete with illustratons.

An awesome story of romance and patriotism

This book is worth the wait it takes to find it. It not only tells Riis's story of his battle with the slums, but it is also the story of a simple man's journey to America and how he fell in love with her. Intertwined is a love story that if not for history would be quite unbelievable in its romance and ending. The book shows what the faith of one man can accomplish in our world when that faith is put into action. This is a heart-warming and positive book that should be reprinted.

You won't need any other map of Oahu, unless you plan on some serious hiking or backpacking on the Waianae or Koolau trails. This map, with Stuart Ball's Hiking Guide will get you to and from most trails. This map also includes many interesting tourist spots not usually found in more popular guides.

The resplendent writing style is what nourishes the readers' attention in these exploration narratives of John Fremont. His exploring responsibilities were to map and survey the American West, and gather scientific data on geology, botany, zoology, geography and natural resources. In addition to these responsibilities, he was to observe Native American cultures and suggest locations for future military forts for the protection of the soon to be thousands of overland emigrants. These exploration narratives are a total pleasure to read, being very descriptive, vivid and realistic as to their day to day existence. Fremont and his expeditions covered thousands of miles, gathering a plethora of information for future generations and setting the tone for westward migrations. The first one to coin the phrase "Great Basin" because of his exploration efforts; put an end to the mythical Buenaventura River legend which was suppose to be a major waterway connecting the Rockies with the Pacific; and discoverer of Lake Tahoe. He and his men suffered through hunger, thirst, frigid temperatures, snow, Indian confrontations, etc. Should have access to a map however, as this version does not contain one. Excellent book. Highly recommend.

The Basis and Structure of Civilization

The above would be an appropriate title for this concise and unpretentious account of human development.
My first reading of the book was many years ago and was invaluable in formulating an understanding of how civilization began and particularly in withstanding the nonsense produced by the present day "anthropologists" who make the definition of civilization a shifting target.
If this book were to be the basis of a definition of civilization it would begin a useful science of anthropology and a reaming out of the nonsense that has inundated this area of endeavour.
The style in which the book is written makes surprisingly absorbing and light reading considering the scope and weight of the topic .
The sombre title is witness only to an unassuming presentation of an Author sympathetic to his subject.

Classic Biography

Forget Antonia Fraser, Alison Weir, and their sorry ilk; this hundred-year-old work still ranks as perhaps the most definitive biography of this most controversial of Queens to date. Henderson's work remains valuable because, unlike virtually every book to date about Mary Stewart (including John Guy's admirable recent bio,) the author manages to remain coolly objective. He comes neither to praise Mary nor bury her, although in the process he manages to do a judicious amount of both. In addition to this unusual lack of partisanship, his biography is solidly-researched, factually accurate, insightful, and well written. (As a bonus, Henderson is also very funny at times.)
The one major flaw in the book is Henderson's cavalier treatment of the death of Mary's notorious second husband, Henry, Lord Darnley. Here, his usual common sense and restraint seem to utterly desert him. Perhaps overwhelmed by the sheer murky complexity of the crime (despite over four hundred years of effort by numberless historians, Darnley's demise still ranks as one of history's most stubbornly baffling unsolved murders,) Henderson really fails to even try and explain Kirk o'Field at all, retreating into vaguely muttering a recap of the most absurd contemporary efforts to frame Mary and the Earl of Bothwell for the slaying.
When a reputable historian finds himself relying on George Buchanan for source material, you know he's in big trouble.
I also wish Henderson had spent more time analyzing the Casket Letters in the main body of his biography, but I suppose that, having already devoted an entire book to the subject (the indispensable "Mary Queen of Scots and the Casket Letters,") he felt he had said his fill on the matter. He compensates, however, by including an appendix where he gleefully tears into Andrew Lang's famously indecisive book about the letters ("The Mystery of Mary Stuart," a work where Lang seemed to come to a different conclusion about their authenticity with each successive edition.) While this essay is one of the most hilarious historical Fiskings I've ever read, you can't help but squirm while he takes on poor Lang. It's a bit like watching Godzilla going through Tokyo.
This book is one of the relatively few "must-reads" for anyone interested in the human puzzle that was Mary Queen of Scots.

Mountain Wildflowers Of The Southern Rockies: Revealing Their Natural History" is the work of retired academician Carolyn Dodson (University of New Mexico General Library) and William W. Dunmire (Associate in Biology at the University of New Mexico). The result of this impressive collaboration is a superbly illustrated and enthusiastically recommended field guide to the principle wildflowers most commonly associated with Southern Rocky Mountain landscapes during the high country seasons ranging spring through to the end of fall. This mountain range runs from Taos, New Mexico to Casper Wyoming, and from Colorado Springs to Boulder on the east and west, to Grand Junction. Featuring 201 color photos, 58 line drawings, and a map, "Mountain Wildflowers Of The Southern Rockies" offers 192 pages of informed and informative information including each featured plant's physical description as a wildflower, the plants individual roles in human history, their relationship with birds and insects, their origins and family characteristics, as well as their evolutionary details. From western wallflower, columbine, larkspur, shooting star, and lupine, to water hemlock, primrose, flax, scarlet penstemon, and bluebells, the flowers showcased in this very highly recommended reference include the individual flower's Latin name. Featuring a glossary, suggested references, a selected bibliography, and an index, "Mountain Wildflowers Of The Southern Rockies" could well serve as a template for similar field guides for wildflowers in other sections of the country.

Here is the first place to go if your paper happens to be on one of Wagner's music dramas (read: operas). This is the only publication I have found which lists every single leitmotif used in each music drama, with musical examples. There is even a chart at the beginning of each section (each music drama) which lists all leitmotifs one should look for in each scene. Definately a must for every musicologist's library, and recommended reading for all those who want to join the struggle to understand Wagner.

Joseph Addison resided at Magdalen College, Oxford for ten years. He was elected a fellow. His serious attention was concentrated on Latin Poetry. His classical knowledge was confined within narrow limits. Addison imitated Virgil with skill. He was probably introduced by Dryden to Congreve.
In 1700 Addison was in France and subsequently in Genoa. Addison was not mean, he was not cowardly. He wrote with a delicate and humane sense of humor. He was in Parliament for nine years. His influence was the result of his literary talents. Addison did not speak in the chamber.
Steele had known Addison from childhood. The best writing in THE TATLER was the handiwork of Addison. In 1711 THE SPECTATOR was conceived by Addison. Steele sketched the two friends. About three-sevenths of the work was done by Addison. At the close of 1712 THE SPECTATOR ceased to appear. Swift showed respect and tenderness for Addison.
Milton is best known by his poetry. He admired Euripides. The only poem of modern times PARADISE LOST can be compared to is THE DIVINE COMEDY. THE DIVINE COMEDY is a personal narrative. Milton wrote in an age of philosophers and theologians. Milton's fiends are wonderful creations. Dante had intensity of feeling, Milton loftiness of spirit. The strength of Milton's mind overcame every calamity.
Macaulay has an admirably compressed style. His focus is on character and personality in regard to his subjects.
