Splendid study of power shifts in textualizing Pacific

This is a splendid study of power shifts, ruses, mimicry, contamination, counter-authority, in the textualizing Pacific seen as a domain of conversion and imperial materiality. The book deserves a wider recognition within postcolonial studies, as a thick descriptive theorization of colonial authority as made and unmade in a nexus of unequal and unstable distribution, then and now. The materials on Stevenson in Samoa are the best of their kind on native and colonial collaboration in something mongrel and new.

This is a beautifully written book that intertwines science, life and poetry. Suzanne seems to draw on her own experiences and mingle them with art. There is a great feeling of truth you get from reading this book, it's real and refreshing.
Suzanne is also a wonderful speaker, words come to life like nowhere else when she reads aloud.
I would recommend this book to anyone, it opens a whole new door in the world of writing.

Living with Wildlife in the Pacific Northwest fills a huge hole in creating understanding of the wildlife we share our beautiful region with. Each description is packed with useful information on how to identify an animal, its habits and preferred habitat and its legal status to name just a few categories. This is a "must have" for anyone who wants to learn more.

This is a very creepy play. There is a doctor attending a dying patient at the beginning of the play, but the doctor is a minor character. Most of the plot is about young people discovering what happened 23 years earlier, when an actress, a painter, and a poet started to live their lives as single people instead of forming couples, except that the plot reveals who had been the most significant couples in the days before being single was realized to be the kind of freedom most likely to produce youthful artistic accomplishments. One of the creepy aspects of the play is how artistic skill is tied to youthful self-confidence, the pride in one's work that is difficult for an actress to maintain if she has been Marilyn Monroe for too long, for example. Even the actress is a minor character in this play. A professor of art who is functioning mainly as the head of some institution is a symbol of the societal need for fatherhood, but he is even a minor character compared to a picture that was painted 23 years before and a poetic image that might drive someone insane if the actuality of the image breaks into reality. The picture becomes the life and love of this play, but most of the characters treat poetry like it is death itself. Such comprehension might be more wrenching than creepy for people who are experts at this kind of thing, but what matters is that it is well done.

The book has a great variety of historical pictures. You get the real flavor of the old west. You understand how many settlers earned their money and how they settled in the old west.
It is a beautifully crafted large book.

A Revolutionary Voyage

D'Entrecasteaux was a talented French navigator, tapped in 1792 to lead a "rescue" operation to find the great French explorer La Perouse, whose Pacific expedition had vanished without a trace in 1789. The collective French desire to find and rescue this great man was intense, and transcended political boundaries. Indeed, in his last moments before facing the guillotine, King Louis XVI had asked "What news of La Perouse?" When the expedition did sail, however, it was torn between three conflicting directives; first, the "official" rescue mission, second, pure scientific research and discovery; third, to check British influence in the Pacific region. Thus it was that D'Entrecasteaux ended up zig-zagging around the South Pacific in an effort first to check whether the British were truly settling the Admiralty islands (they weren't), then to look for La Perouse (they didn't find him) and then to seek out new discoveries (he discovered the Recherche Archipelago, among others). Sadly, however, D'Entrecasteaux died of scurvy in 1793, and his expedition was commandeered by d'Auribeau, a royalist sympathizer determined to stop the ships falling into the hands of the new republic. He surrendered the expedition to the Dutch authorities in Java, and through this and a series of further misadventures, the expedition's papers were not published for another ten years.
Horner's account is through and enjoyable, and pays particular tribute to D'Entrecasteaux's contribution to Australian exploration, notably in Tasmania, where he discovered the celebrated D'Entrecasteaux Channel, an excellent deep water channel separating Bruny Island from Tasmania's east coast, which is now a highly popular cruise ship destination.

I read this within a month or so of reading On The Bottom by Edward Ellsberg. That heroic rescue of 50 years earlier was so similar to the total disaster of the Thresher. I would highly recommend reading both books, for a comparison of submarine rescues fifty years apart.

Clive's real-life story would be judged as implausible if it came from the pen of a novelist. Robert Clive was the founder of the Indian empire, Britain's first guerilla fighter, conqueror of Bengal, and an avenging angel of righteousness.
