I read this title back in 1992 when I participated in a Law Enforcement/Physical Security Training program for the United States Navy. A very informative work, but unfortunately, it is very outdated at this time (October 3, 2001). If anyone really wants to understand what the U.S. can and cannot do under the laws of the U.N. and the International Community, this is must reading.

R S Thomas is the best Welsh poet writing in English. All his work is good and this collection especially so. It is more concerned with religion and has fewer of the rural vignettes and the concern with Welsh identity of his earlier work. His craft and his bleak vision remain. Highly recommended.

These days, celebrity authors earn thousands of dollars for a speech, but back in the 1880s, Ralph Waldo Emerson, the first American author known to receive payment for delivering a talk, was paid $5 and oats for his horse.

"Letters from the Pacific" should be required reading for all U.S. Military Chaplains. The letters written by Chaplain Russell Stroup show the side of a sensitive, caring man who ministered to the troops assigned to him, plus even the enemy (as P.O.W.'s during WWII) on occasion. A Godly man, his letters have been edited and presented to the public by his nephew, Richard Cartwright Austin. I have the hardback book on my shelf, and will read it again in the future.
I wish I could have met him; there don't seem to be enough heroes these days.

As an admirer of Victor Hugo's famous novels, Les Miserables and Notre Dame de Paris, I have now come to have an affinity for the man behind the epic novels and the grandoise talent throughout his works. Reading his letters gives u a glimpse into the writer's thoughts, and also gives a glimpse of his exile, his friends and family, and the events that happened in his life from exile. It's quite an interesting read. You have to be a fan or admirer of Victor Hugo to actually get something out of this book. But i recommend it to people who are interested in Victor Hugo. I also recommend Les Mis and Toilers of the Sea.

Commander Paul C. Bonnette was apparently not only a good dentist but a handy man to have around when the chips were down.
His letters home, written while taking part in the Kwajalein, Eniwetok, Saipan, Guam, Leyte, and other operations, are in a breezy style which may be a bit off-putting to the modern sensibility, until it is understood that his facetious tone was deliberately adopted to keep up the spirits on the homefront. The reader in any case will forgive the stylistic shortcomings when he realizes how Bonnette earned his Bronze Star during a kamikaze attack at Lingayan Gulf in 1945.
It would have been nice to see some further research by the editors on persons, places, and events encountered by the Commander in his 16 months at sea, but the letters alone are a valuable record of a brave man and a fine combat ship.

Reading Fabre is a joyful experience. I don't normally care much about insects, but I find that reading Fabre's essays on various denizens of his Provence property draw me into the passion he feels for his beloved subjects. Unfettered by formal education and conventional notions (Fabre was an autodidact), Fabre gives free rein to his delight in observing the insect world while not losing a standard of refined, accurate observation. He also has the knack of keeping the reader engaged, allowing the drama of these tiny lives to show through. This book is a great find. I got turned on to it by its mention in William Zinsser's "Writing To Learn" as a premium example of the finest non-fiction writing.

This is an Award Winning catalogue which shows the exhibits which were collected during Captain Cook's expeditions to the Pacific. They have been in storage for many years at the Georg August University of Gottingen and have now returned to storage for an indefinite period. It was a unique opportunity to view long unseen artifacts. Excellent.
