Peter Kropotkin's 'Conquest of Bread' helps point the way toward a future ruled, not by greed and oppression, but by fairness, rational division of labour, and humanity. This book is an antidote for the bugbears of state socialism and 'liberal' capitalism.

The collaboration of Patricia Crawford and Ian Crawford, Contested Country is a fact-filled, 303-page, highly recommended history of the area surrounding Northcliffe, a small Western Australia country town. Ably presented as a microcosm of Australian society and socio-environ-mental history, Contested Country expertly and informatively explores the ways in which different people have strived to shape the land to suit their own needs, with a close eye on divisions between Aboriginal and European attitudes.

Lively, spirited journal

Review Date: 2006-01-04
Albert Jerome Dickson was a fourteen-year old youth when taking these notes of his 1864 journey westward to Montana. In later years his son Arthur compiled all his father's notes, journals and papers into this narrative. Young Albert was enthusiastic, sharp-eyed and keen in his observations.
Not only do we read of day to day travel on the trail, but also Indian uprisings and intimidations of the early 1860's; road agents, thieves and murderers and how vigilante groups confronted this behavior; life in early Montana mining communities; the reality of making ends meet while homesteading; establishment of territorial laws; character analysis of such men as Jim Bridger, J. M. Bozeman, military figures, the notorious Jack Slade and many others.
An enjoyable and historical timepiece.

Deserves a spot on community library American history shelves.

In the early nineteenth century, Chief Paulina proved to be the fiercest human enemy the early settlers of the west ever encountered killing unknown amounts of them, just one of the many stories from the Oregon of the old west. "Crooked River County: Wranglers, Rogues, and Barons" is a non-fiction tale of Oregon's wild past focusing on twenty eight years starting with 1825. Reading like fiction, author David Braly insists it's a true story, and the wild exploits and actions one will read about are just crazy enough to be just that. Thoroughly researched, scholarly, but still intriguing straight through, "Crooked River County: Wranglers, Rogues, and Barons" is enthusiastically recommended to anyone with an interest in the old west, and deserves a spot on community library American history shelves.

Written by Bruce E. Barnes (Associate Professor of Conflict Resolution at the Matsunaga Institute for Peace), Culture, Conflict, and Mediation in the Asian Pacific is an advanced study in the art, skill, and invaluable practice of negotiating solutions to problematic situations between people, businesses, and governments. Culture, Conflict, and Mediation in the Asian Pacific specifically examines what can be learned from conflict resolution scenarios seen in the nations of China, Taiwan, Singapore, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Philippines, Indonesia, and Thailand, from ancient processes to newly evolving "ADR" techniques. Chapters focus upon the practices of each nation in turn, and over thirty case studies robustly illuminate the points and suggestions that can be learned for global application. An advanced reference and resource especially recommended for study and reference by aspiring and professional mediators, whether in law, social work, or other fields.

Insider point of view on an Old California town.

As a California historian, columnist for the OLD CALIFORNIA GAZETTE and author of SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA MISCELLANY, I found this book to have a wonderful insider's point of view on Daggett's history and culture. This is the kind of book that readers--who have an interest in local and regional history--will find interesting and infomative for it recounts the events and personallities in Daggett as written in the local newspaper by an "Old-timer" resident, hence an insider's knowledege is shared and if not for this book... who would ever know?

A groundbreaking look into Sioux (Dakota) customs and manners from a long-term observer
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2005-10-14
Written by the wife of an army officer, and compiled over the course of seven years in the 1840s at Fort Snelling, in what would one day become Minnesota Territory, Dahcotah Or, Life And Legends Of The Sioux was a groundbreaking look into Sioux (Dakota) customs and manners from a long-term observer, first published in 1849. Now republished in a new edition with a biographical preface about author Mary Eastman and featuring the quality painted landscapes of the original reproduced in color, Dahcotah Or, Life And Legends Of The Sioux retains its unique keen insight and attention to detail that distinguished it over one hundred and fifty years ago. Though Dahcotah is not an entirely unbiased account - for one thing, the author was a devout Christian who wished to see all Native Americans converted to her religion - yet it is written with empathy and sorrow for the sufferings of the Dahcotah people, retold in individual stories as well as broad descriptions, and deserves its reputation as a frontier classic.

An Excellent Read

How was Hugo as a murder mystery writer? Excellent, in my view. While teaching at Montana, Hugo served with excellent mystery writer James Crumley, and the latter may have provided some impetus and inspiration to Hugo. 'Death and the Good Life' is a quick-paced read, one filled with the veridical wisdom we have come to appreciate so much in Hugo's poetry. While weaving an intriguing mystery, Hugo's characters leave us with several memorable, if not haunting, lines: "As long as we can keep the working classes under surveillance, we will survive" (74); or, "... and it was like a lot of other American towns -- junky. The usual monuments of something that may, given the peculiarity of history, come to be called civilization" (128); while lines like "We sat and looked at the ocean spilling all its secrets to a world that didn't care" (134) remind us of his poems, 'Beachthieves' and 'Alki Beach.' In sum, Hugo's only novel is full of enough action and surprizes that grip the reader's attention right through to the surprizing end.
