Dr Strahan's masterly review of changing Australian perceptions of China is nothing short of miraculous. My only comment is that Dr Strahan neglects somewhat the role of the Collingwood Australian Football Club in Australia - China relations in favour of the less important and quite frankly overrated Carlton.

if you are going to read 1 book on Indians in the next year, read this one.
the author may have written the 'best in world' discussion of how and by whom Indians are defined.
probably the best book on the subject since "The White Man's Indian : Images of the American Indian from Columbus to the Present" by Robert F. Berkhofer

B Street: The Notorious Playground of Coulee Dam captures an up-close, in-focus glimpse of American history in the making during the era of the Great Depression and beyond. During these difficult times, B Street was a place of recreation for white workingmen, particularly those who labored on the Coulee Dam; filled with shops, restaurants, and brothels, B Street was off-limits to blacks and most dark-skinned individuals, including Indians. Opening with the eyes and memories of author Lawney L. Reyes, a young boy who wandered B Street with his little sister Luana and their dog Pickles while their Indian mother and Filipino father survived hand-to-mouth running a Chinese restaurant, B Street continues through preservations of Reyes' mother's diary, enhanced with stories told by his parents and other members of the Sin-Aikst tribe. B Street is ultimately a profound testimony to the history and culture of the Indians whose way of life was overwhelmed with change through the creation of the Grand Coulee Dam. Highly recommended, especially for Native American reading lists.

This one is the real deal. Philip Garrison is not talking about idealized images of a people. He is talking to the people who are moving from one culture to another and trying to make sense of it all. And Garrison is trying to make sense of their worldview. If you really want to get beyond the trite slogans about migrant labor, read this book.

Joseph Campbell meets Barry Lopez

This book held my attention and is a rich experience in the geography, history, comparative religion and spirituality of the Great Basin. If the mythologist Joseph Campbell sat down with the poet Barry Lopez the resulting discussion might look a lot like this book. Yet the book is richer than such a discussion because of Francaviglia's rich nuances and deeply personal take on the Great Basin. This is a stunning book and taught me a great deal about appreciating the many levels of the Great Basin.

I am an International Relations grad. student. This book is a class assignment. It turns out a really good read: like watching a live debate in front of you, one gets a basketful of good ideas as well as personalities. Almost every author in the book brings with him/her a refreshing set of arguments and presents each with coherence and cogency. IMO, many articles are befitting for publications like the New Yorker, Foreign Affairs, the Economist and the NYT.

This is a quietly beautiful and fascinating story--a work of scholarship and a work of love. Joanne Mulcahy has written a stunning book about Mary Peterson, a remarkable woman, and about the cultural revival that both Mary and the author played crucial roles in bringing about. It is something few Americans know anything about--and all of us should.

I read this book a few years ago and loved it. The story of the Texas and Pacific Coal and Oil company seems so typically American. From the crooked Yankee come South who recognizes the coal that was a nuisance to the farmer scratching out a living, the New York financiers who put the enterprise on a secure financial foundation and did very well by themselves in the process, the immigrant miners, prosperous company town, self-taught geololgist who opened up the Ranger oil field, a gas-pump juckey who earned a raise in the midst of the depression selling lube jobs and treating his wife to a mid-week hamburger, the names which dot Fort Worth buildings and streets, this book covers and links up an America and Texas from frontier to the outlines of its present corporate complexity.
