The book itself is a classic from the 1930s, but the afterword by Dr. Starchild did a good job of convincing me that this old form of transportation could still have a wonderful potential.

Doomed to repeat history?

I can't believe I'm the first to review this book because I found it so important in understanding the current American invasion and occupation of Iraq and the attitudes here at home about that series of events. I also found the most coherent exposition of the concept of Manifest Destiny that I've read... ever. Whether he's taking a close look at Fr. Berrigan's words or at films released after the Vietnam war, the author is spot on about what ails the U.S.A. He offers no easy solutions, but defining the problem well and accurately is generally a huge step towards solving it. William Cobb defined the problem.

Still an indispensable guide to lieratures of Hawai'i.

This far reaching study, the first of its kind, is still an indispendable guide to the literatures of Hawai'i and required reading as such. The pathos and commitment of the book still come across, over the years and the distances of island separation and diaspora in Michigan. Read it on the beach or in your study.

The best !

For nine years this book has been my "bible" in my job as biller for a plant broker in Southern California. Although my education included two years of Latin (it helped me get the job!) I still need help in the proper spelling of plant names/species/varieties, since my boss is a great horticulturist but a very poor speller. This book is now dog-eared and falling apart, but I can't work without it. Although it was published many years ago and doesn't have the newest varieties, it still has many that the later books don't have, in a concise and readable format. I recommend it highly!

A brief history of Antarctica
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-09-28
Great overview about the geopolitics of the Antarctic Continent. The book is separated in four chapters:
1.- The Antarctic Continent, which briefly describes the story of explorations, fauna and flora and the minerals and hydrocarbons of this region.
2.- The Future of Antarctica, why is everybody interested in this continent.
3.- The Antarctic Treaty of 1959, and
4.- Chile's Interest in Antarctica.

As you will see there are two important movements arguing the future of this continent, one is Internationalization of the continent and the other one is Territorial claims of this polar region. In my view the first one is totally out of discussion since countries like russia has nothing to claim about this continent. I believe Antarctica is of major importance for this earth, we must take good care of it, but nobody knows what the future holds so if one day some of its resources needs to be exploited, is absolutely necessary that those countries with valid claims should be granted access to it, that is to say, Chile, Britain, Australia, New Zealand, Argentina, Norway and France.

Instant immersion into Washington state prehistory
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-12-09
This book by Ruth Kirk (author of many Washington guidebooks) and Richard Daugherty (a leading Washington State University archaeologist involved in many of the studies discussed in the book) provides a wonderful introduction to the field of archaeology and to many of the diverse sites which have been studied across the state of Washington. In the process, the reader is exposed to many themes: the dramatic geologic events that characterize the state's history (volcanoes, tsunamis, mudslides, ashfalls, giant floods), food-gathering and cultural patterns of Native Americans, long-term patterns of climate change, and effects of European contact. A very interesting chapter on archaeology of newer sites related to European settlement is also provided. The photos and list of references at the back of the book are excellent. This book makes me want to go out and visit the sites (where possible) and museums to see what is discused firsthand.

Reprint of an Air University Press classic
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2002-07-10
It was in 1944 that General of the Army Henry H. 'Hap' Arnold established the Army Air Forces (AAF) Scientific Advisory Group (SAG) under the direction of Dr. Theodore von Karman. The SAG meticulously created the first science and technology forecast ever accomplished in military history. Some of the more outstanding developments are supersonic flight, precision weaponry, accurate radar, and the development of intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBM). In this book, Dik Daso tells the story of the founding of the scientific and technological base of today's USAF. In large measure, this book reflects the symbiotic nature of the military and the society which it serves. This book is an introduction to the very nature of the USAF-a service founded in aviation science and technology and built by great commanders, innovators, and dedicated men and women in the service of their nation.

Arguments About Aborigines
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2000-06-14
At first I felt awe, then dismay, at the amount of literature available on this most-studied culture, the Aborigine of Australia. The culture has been of intense interest since the ealiest days of formal ethnological and anthropological enquiry. Hiatt's book has given me a perspective into the history of scholarly enquiry that informs and conditions my reaction to the work of others. His format is subject-oriented according to his own scholarly interest in the Aborigine but is prefaced in each chapter by a review of the prejudices and aspirations of his predecessors. The book is highly readable and very stimulating. I consider it essential, at the least, to others like myself who have no formal anthropological training but who must discern and rely on the work and opinions of scholars.
