A rare jewel of a book. James A.Gibbs creates a mood and a spirit that goes far beyond the simple history of a lighthouse. The author's firsthand experience of actually living and working at Tillamook Light gives the book a powerful and touching edge. Tillamook Lighthouse "Terrible Tilly" was one of the most fierce and inhospitable places in America and it produced a rare breed of men that were full of courage and unusual determination. A great adventure book for late night reading and a must for any lighthouse enthusiast.

Have you ever wondered what those government sponsered scientific documents mean? Gail has read many and synthesized some so that a reader can understand what they say. Have you ever wondered about practices like "Structure Based Management" or "Managed Growth" and why anyone would be interested them? Or what they mean to you, a person who cares about forest practices. The author of this book has a heart that loves hiking in rich forest and a soul that came out of a logging family in the heart of logging country, Coos Bay, Oregon. Do you want to know what foresters, government experts, ecologists, scientists, and planners are planning? The work they are attempting in the Tillamook will be replicated into other areas if successful.

An amazing story about a teenage boy's "rite of passage" on a trip along the PCT (Pacific Coast Trail) with his horse. It made me want to travel the PCT! What a great trip for a teenage boy to make, and what wonderful parents he had to allow him to do this. A great read, inspiring.

A bright, fresh look at Oregon
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 2001-05-12
Finally a travel/guide book that reveals the secrets and true beauty of Oregon! Gordon Coffin has done an excellent job of covering the entire state. The "Special Interest Tours" are well planned and have something for everyone. As a "local", the book is a great reference for our many visitors. We use the "Calendar of Events" section to schedule out-of-town guest's visits to coincide with fun events such as Portland's Waterfront Blues Festival. The writing is colorful, descriptions are enticing. This book makes planning and organizing a trip in Oregon so easy. Gordon Coffin stayed away from the overvisited tourist attractions and shared his private collection of Oregon gems. This is a book for anyone planning a trip to Oregon and a must for all Oregonians.

Seeking Northwest Trees
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2000-12-22
At times it seems urban trees are disappearing rapidly in the name of progress, but here the authors present 130 plus noteworthy native and "exotic" tree species growing throughout greater Portland neighborhoods dating from early settlement days in Portland. Along with neighborhood tree tours, street locations, photos, botanical and common tree name, the authors give us a glimpse of the story of the origin of many of the trees. The authors offer the reader a unique opportunity to get an upclose view of some great native Northwest trees along with other trees planted and thriving in Portland.

This is a GREAT book. It is easy to read and well-written. You will enjoy reading it if you have to study Lewis and Clark or just to improve your knowledge about the Trail. There are three extremely interessant parts:
- The focus on the Northwest at the time of the Trail
- How people have been celebrating the importance of the Expedition / Centennial, etc...
- The conversation between Lang, Conner, Zinn and Abbott
Plus: pictures punctuate the book / useful for people who are not from the Northwest

Get a feel for the culture
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2005-05-16
This book on the University of Oregon gave me great insight into the school and the area around it. I know next to nothing about Eugene, Oregon and now I feel I know it a bit better. The sections on Campus housing and dining were great as were the academics section of course. I was pleasantly suprised to find that there were sections on guys and girls, diversity, and athletics in addition to all of the more academic sections. All aspects of a school are important so it was good to get a better feel for the culture and this bok really helped with that.
