This is an excellent book in the form of an autobiography with a filosofical and humanistic pulse, describing his stormy moods, passions, ideals, and beliefs lived during his artistically inclined youth, and their changes from middleage to his old age.
Late-life ruminations of an exceptional writerReview Date: 2000-04-07
Although I agree with Sabato's indictment of the terrible things that are happening around us, I find his invocation of the 'Absolute' quite uncomfortable. It seems that, in his old age, Sabato is trying to look for a 'deity' that would save us all, that would give meaning to our lives, and he calls it the 'Absolute'. I would have thought that, after all these years of suffering and searching, Sabato would have found more answers, and hope, in simple human beings than in the highly questionable grail of the 'Absolute'. Evidently, however, I was mistaken. To me, as to many humanists, it's not a matter of an ultimate goal, of reaching the 'Absolute' in one's every action; it's, simply, a matter of realizing that we are all human beings with the same basic necessities, just one species among millions, and that we should respect everybody and the world around us just for that. No invocation of a deity is needed; no 'Absolutes' are required. Sabato is, I'm afraid, painfully wrong and dissapointing on that account.
Even though I enjoyed the book, with its gripping prose, I must admit that I didn't learn much about Sabato from it. To me, the powerful and real Sabato is in his novels, particularly in 'Sobre heroes y tumbas'. However, if you haven't been introduced to Sabato's world, 'Antes del fin' would be a good introduction. Only on that account I recommend this book.

Bleh ...Review Date: 2008-07-20
There are 40 pages of useful information, followed by 160 pages of emo navel-gazing, and pictures of art that looked like they were "best in class" for some 3rd grade somewhere.
I'm amazed that this has managed to stay in print for 13 years!
Art is a way of knowing...yourself Review Date: 2008-05-12
Allen's book pushes me to keep on keeping on! For so long I've wondered about how to adapt what I make so others understand. Now I'm learning that has been the wrong question and challenge. This book was part of my realization of what Art is Really For -- for learning about myself -- for a message to myself -- a personal magic. Art can and does change the way we live our lives. The interesting thing to me is how making your own art can reveal deeper meanings in your life -- the real value of art-making -- understanding and meaning. Initially symbols may seem to mean something, but Pat Allen gives examples in her own life which show how understanding and living through the experiences of our lives change they way we perceive the meanings of our personal symbols. That's the great and wonderful thing about the symbolic language of images. ... A direct and candid look at one artist's experience of making art...which can inspire all of us who are driven to make things, and which can help us to better understand why. In many cases the answer in our artwork will come later, in time, when we are ready for it.

The book is filled with her own original artwork, and it is a very open, brave art indeed.
Her suggestions for the reader are very stimulating, and make one eager to begin to make art.She offers many examples of art activities and materials.,and even has an appendix for a music catalogue(she suggests listening to music while artmaking)and an adress for art supply catalogue...Everyone will feel like an artist,as well as getting to know oneself at a deep level through doing this book.

Very interestingReview Date: 2006-05-13
Some of Neuhaus students among many others:
- Sviatoslav Richter and Emil Gilels, both considered top 10 world pianists.
- The first teacher (the mother) of Andrei Gavrilov.
- Radu Lupu.
This book is funny as exemplified below by some excerpts:
"Thinking about art and science, about their mutual relationship and contradictions, I came to the conclusion, for some reason or other, that mathematics and music are situated at extreme poles of the human spirit, that these two antipodes limit and determine the whole spiritual and creative activity of man and that situated between them is everything that mankind has created in the field of science and art".
I found his above childish thoughts very interesting, perhaps meaning that everything is a linear combination of pure logic (math) and pure emotion (music). As I work with math and like to play piano I will tend to be a "complete" human being :-)
Other of his "jokes":
"When Emil Gilels came to study with me in the Moscow State Conservatory, I was once forced to say to him: You are already a grown man, you can eat steak and drink beer but so far you have been fed with a baby's bottle"
"I remember that when Glazunov was about fifty his mother used to tell the washerwoman to be careful with the child's linen"
"To play the piano is easy. I mean the physical process, and not the summit of pianistic art.It is obvious that to play the piano very well is just as difficult as to do anything else very well, for instance to pull teeth or macadam a road".
"I must once more apologize for this excessively long history about myself; that is always somewhat indecent. But what can one do?"
"Carl Czerny, the "dry and methodical genius" who has tortured generations of pianists wih an inexhaustible stream of studies and exercises..."
And many more...
His jokes are almost everywere. Otherwise the book has several useful recommendations and analysis about the art of piano playing and has chapters on "artistic image of a musical composition", on tone, on technique and on teaching activity.
But be advised: Sometimes the book is a bit verbose, repetitive and philosophical. It is not directed only to technical problems.

A classic....Review Date: 2005-12-02
This is also pretty advanced so I doubt non musicians could find any utility apart from historical tidbits. Neuhaus taught Richter who taught many others.... and just like we do with other disciplines - we have to pay tribute to the forefather of this lineage/legacy, especially since he helped produce Richter.

Possibly one of the best parts of the book is the last few pages, that actually show the musical notation for the trope marks. This is what most other sources are lacking, but it's immensely valuable to those of us who can read music. Once we've heard the trope a few times, we don't have to turn on the CD in order to be reminded -- just turn to the back of the book, or even just carry around a photocopy of those 3-4 pages.

Awakening and Supporting AD and HD at any AgeReview Date: 2002-07-12
The methodology of art therapy is an insight not only to expose repressed feelings as well as helping to define the perspectives of those with antisocial behavior patterns.
The clarity of this easily read book and the dedication of the author's efforts should give impetus to new hope for those who have struggled with this neurological problem.
This reviewer's first hand encounters with the symptoms of ADand HD,hyperactivity, distractibility and impulsivity which evoked only a loving empathy found the contents of the book a hope-filled horizon.
By teaching and giving vent through physical expression in art forms many more senses are engaged leading to awakenings, the author encourages, thereby moving all concerned to more pragmatic and redeeming stages of self regard and social responsibility.
Ms. Safran's studies and conclusions may well repave many paths filled with frustrations and heartbreak for families while providing a seemingly simple method to self discovery for the
ADandHD affected.....at any age.

Art Therapy: A must with ADHDReview Date: 2002-07-13
What is most impressive is her sensitivity to and the awareness of the pervasive impact this disorder has on the whole family. Regardless of whether the patient is a child or an adult, once the diagnosis is made, Safran and her team are prepared to address individual, family and environmental issues impacting on future progress of the patient.
The text is well written, the format easy to follow and the case studies and illustrations excellent.
As a pioneer in the field of art therapy education, I recommend this book not only to those teachers and mental health professionals working with ADHD populations, but to students in all fields of mental health who need to be informed about the value of this discipline as an adjunct to their practice and as a significant modality that may be a treatment of choice.

A Truly Enjoyable RideReview Date: 2008-04-21
Anyone who grew up with sixties Rock 'n Roll should find this funny yet
incisive retrospective highly entertaining.
Al Kooper, a man with 50 years in the music business as back-up, and a
Magna Cum Laude graduate of the School of Hard Knocks, manages to relate
his memoirs in an easygoing, good-natured and often hilarious manner. And,
despite the title and events behind it, he hardly has a bad word to say about anyone (which would seem somewhat incredible). As a bonus, he's a pretty good writer.
Here is a man who, for a half century, has been ubiquitous in the Rock business, mostly in the background but never from the sidelines, yet is largely
unknown outside of the music industry fraternity. And while it appears that credit for his enormous contribution to the medium has been difficult
to come by, he has to a large extent gained the RESPECT he so rightly deserves. Perhaps this is because he comes across as a real
person and not some untouchable Rock legend. You'll like him.
I had a great time reading this book and recommend it highly.
Not bad, Al, not bad at all!!Review Date: 2008-04-02
Al Kooper is a musician's musician. His experience spans the history of good popular music from the late '50s to the present. It is intriging to figuratively be a "fly on the wall" as Al relates his experiences with the Blues Project, Dylan, BS&T, Bloomfield, Skynrd, Jimmy Vivino, the Beatles, Stones...shall I go on? His wit, objectivity about himself and down to earth perspective on events which (although many of us see in mythic proportions - Dylan's Highway '61, for instance)he actually lived, make this book a uniqely honest portrayal of the period. If you are a guitar player who grew up during the mid-late '60s in America, you probably were either a Bloomfield or Kalb fan. Well, Al played with both of them. If you are a Hammond B3 player who grew up during the same period, well, you must be aware of Al's work. For you other people who may not know about Mr. Kooper's contributions, you you are in for a surprise, a big one!! Mr. Kooper, as a working musician, provides inside details of events only someone with his experience could. This book is highly recommended for anyone who has even a passing interest in rock, blues, culture or just likes a good read. "Dr." Kooper is one of the good guys and really delivers with this one!!

Fun book.Review Date: 2004-06-03
Unfortunately, that's how most Aaron Carter books are. There may not be as much to write about on a sixteen-year-old as a thirty-something-year-old, but you can make it interesting.
All rants aside, again, this IS a fun book. It has the astrological stuff that teen mags repeat every month. However, this isn't the book for you if you've been a fan of Aaron's for a long time. It's very basic, and you probably already know who Nick is, what his birthday is, where he grew up, etc. Not to mention the fact that this book was released when he was just eleven. Most of the book is filler. His life story is finished before hte first half of the book; the last 2-3 chapters are donated to Nick and the BSB.
A recent fan? Check it out. A long-time fan? Skip it.

Each of these books is an absolute MUST if you are a Beatles fan. I find myself getting one of them off of my bookcase every now and then to read up on a certain album or single...be it VJ, SWAN, CAPITOL, or APPLE. I especially like the Capitol albums book AND both books on APPLE RECORDS.
I'm kinda wondering what Bruce will write on next!!
Why The Beatles Hate the LP'sReview Date: 2007-05-13
disaproval of how the American record company would release anything
as a single. During one of their U.S shows John took a swipe at one
of the LP titles. He didn't have a copy of it & didn't want one. After
buying the Capital Box sets of their U.S. LP's I know know why & you
will too. Growing up in Australia, we got the U.K. versions of their
albums - which are the REAL versions & are better. Read this book & you
will see how the record company milked the music for all they could.
Capitol never wanted them but when they were forced to take
The Beatles...they became the most succesful act to have records released by the label. And you payed for that privilage. A facinating book.

Play like Barry!!Review Date: 2003-07-30
When I say that you can "play like Barry", I mean it. The Brothers have presented us with their well-remembered hits of their collection, and for each hit includes piano and guitar chords. Now, for any guitarist like me you're lucky to have illustrated guitar chords--not just the abbreviations and symbols. I love it when I play my accoustic guitar while going along with "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart"--sounds just like Barry's guitar playing!! The layout of the music is just flawless and unsurpassable.
And, finally, in the "About the Songs" section of the book, I love relooking at the descriptions of the Bee Gees' hits, where Barry, Robin and the never-forgotten Maurice Gibb made comments. The descriptions give you plenty of detail and I always learn something new reading them--for instance, Robin describes how the UK hit "My World" surprisingly became a hit--that motivates me on their music. What I'm trying to tell you is that the descriptions aren't like: "Yes, a great song indeed" and that's it. Not really.. For example, Barry's description of Stayin' Alive blew me away saying "Light fuse and stand well back"--like it was some explosive piece of music. That section just captivates my attention, and makes me replay their music.
This is one ultimate book that makes you play their hits without trouble! You're definitely missing out on this inspiring book if you don't think about buying it!! Believe me, it's worth your every penny.
