I read several previous reviews thinking this would be 100 pages of genuine in-depth help to assist the single guy in the dating world. Instead it felt like an over done Maxim article that was stretched out over 100 pages. It did have it's humorous points and some of the topics might prove helpful to some. However, you're better off spending your money on a cheap subscription to Maxin and grabbing a pint at your local dive bar with some friends.

While may be complimentary for beginners fairly vanilla typical player's type advice though entertaining. A short read. Not much to offer for the investment made. This one was a bomb for me personally. Beware author's business site doesn't respond email nor phone inquiries on book orders eventually had to request refund due to shipment and other irregularities. Recommend purchase only through AMAZON if you so chose. Pleanty in depth credible alternatives for professionals to consider here to polish up one's social skills and success da ladies. 2+ Stars***

I ran across the title of this book from a friend and i read a couple of the sample pages on the internet and when i went to the store to purchase it it was out of print so i just had to look for it. When I went to amazon.com i found out that they had copies for sale and i just ordered it... after reading it i just wanted to copies for my friends because it was so good. All that ime i spend in looking for the book was worth it and i strongly think that this book is a good investment.

I know ROE was written for men, but it gives really great insight, for women, into the world of men. It's humorous and clever, yet informative and quite realistic as far as what women are looking for in men. It's a quick read, and well worth the hour and a half it takes to read it. I can't wait for the female version, coming out this fall!

I borrowed this book and am planning to buy it. There are a lot of ideas to expand on. It's not really a step by step book although some steps are shown for each style the artist introduces. He shows how watercolor, oil and other looks are achieved. I feel, it's the best comprehensive book directed specifically at acrylics I've come across to date...

Excellent

I found this book just as I was beginning to paint. It helped me confirm that it was acrylics, rather than some other medium, that I wanted to use; and it gave me great instruction to get me going. I have subsequently read other painting-technique books (some excellent, others not) and I still think that, as a general discussion of acrylics, this book is perhaps the best I've seen. It has beautiful paintings as examples of what can be accomplished in acrylics.

I was probably a bit stingy in giving only 4 stars, but I feel that, on a very few points, there might have been more detail or elaboration. Still, overall, I know of no better book for anyone new to acrylics--indeed it continues to be a favorite of mine. I recommend this book together with the website of Golden Acrylics; those two resources might be all you will need to educate yourself about the use and manipulation of acrylic paints and acrylic mediums.

Stephen Quiller's books,(I have his book on using Acrylics as well) are definitly the most helpful to me as I am attempting to take up painting again after a long hiatus. His color wheel is fabulous as are his suggestions on mixing results for different pigments, suggestions on setting up one's pallette, what colors are available in various named brands, etc. on and on. All of this information is for water based media, so if that is what you need, it is all here! One may or may not like his style of painting---it is semi-abstract with elements of realism that makes it appear more commercially appealing I suspect, but his color info is dead on! One definitely does not wind up with mud when following his suggestions.

5 stars for his color wheel

This book is worth buying for Quiller's color wheel. It is by far the best and most practical I have ever seen. It makes paint mixing very easy. Throw out your color mixing cook books and buy this one.

A Master of Color Harmony

Review Date: 2004-09-16
Stephen Quiller is a real master of color harmony. I warmly recommend his book. He teaches not only the color theory, but also demonstrates how it works in practice with his own work. Quiller shows how to mix colors in real life and how to find out the complementaries. His color wheel adds the commercial names of hues that one finds in shops, which is quite handy.

Quiller will teach you not to use the "real" surface color of the objects, but to search for feelings and the atmosphere of the ambient. The leaves may be, say, violet and the sky yellow, if that is how you see them.

One thing Quiller misses to point out is additive color mixing like it was used by pointillists. When colors mix in the eye the rules of harmony are somewhat different.

If you are sceptical about brave color mixtures I recommend you to first have a look at Quiller's art at his internet pages.

Color can be everything!

A wonderful way to teach your child self-calming!
Helpful Votes: 18 out of 18 total.
Review Date: 2002-03-30
As the mother of two boys with autism, I am always on the lookout for programs that might help reduce hyperactivity and tics. Yoga For the Special Child has helped in that quest.

This book provides clear visuals as well as written directions on how to coax your child to engage in various postures and breathing exercises, first passively, and in later stages, actively.

I actually began the yoga with my son just as he was beginning to fall asleep. As the weeks have moved on, I have introduced some of the postures that require his active participation.

Very simply, he loves the entire process---and yes, it does leave him much more relaxed.

While I found myself raising my eyebrows at some of the claims of benefit enjoyed by severely disabled participants in the writer's yoga school, I do see where consistent use of yoga can provide a child with the means to self regulate hyperactivity and tics.

I do recommend the book in that light, and I am grateful to have found it just as I feared we would have to medicate for hyperactivity.

It's also a fun bonding experience. I finally have something I can do with my son for a change!

[$$$] for what? A happy kid who can play with others? Hmmm .
Helpful Votes: 19 out of 20 total.
Review Date: 2002-12-05
I must admit at the beginning of my writing this review that I was inspired by an earlier reviewer of this book on this site who wrote a relatively negative one. That is too bad; as there are, probably, a bunch of parents and professionals who have chosen not to plunk down their [$$$] to buy this book based on this person's opinion.

This book is for parents and professionals who are probably trying to find something (perhaps "anything" is a more appropriate word) to help their kid/kids. The author, as she describes in the first chapter or so, has "walked the walk", which now enables her to "talk the talk". And, after reading her story, which is heart-wrenching and, ultimately, uplifting, one realizes that the author is in the business of helping "special children", not because it is a good business idea, but because it is her life's mission. (How much money does an author make on such an inexpensive book written for such a limited audience? God bless her publisher.) In short, the author is sincere, authoritative, and, seemingly, hell-bent (in the most caring, lovey-dovey way imaginable) on changing the way that special children interact with the world.

She offers no quick fixes, and specifically warns against them. She emphasizes that patience, consistency, and a long-term commitment are the keys for the best results. She clearly prefers starting children in her program as soon as possible. However, there definitely seems to be no age limit to the kids with whom she works, as one on them seems to be sporting a cheesy-beginner mustache in a photo of him doing an impossible looking pose. The previous reviewer who said that there were no tools to deal with an older child missed the obvious. The author's emphasis on positive reinforcement and "love" is obviously an attempt to build trust with the child, which is the key to dealing with children (special or not) of any age. As for the most difficult cases, the author also conducts a teachers training program and has trained many people (professionals and parents) around the world, many of whom are available to help overwhelmed parents who want to try this program with their own children. (A website address can be found in a footnote on page 61.)

As for the bulk of the book, it consists of loads of exercises (with descriptions and pictures) to help a child develop strength, muscular control, concentration, self-esteem, etc. She does not give lessons on attaining enlightenment. The goal of these exercises is to have the child integrate with other (less special?) children in a "normal" way. Not bad, if this book can deliver all this for [$$$]. Even if this book only helps 1% of the kids that participate in this program, what thinking parent would not gamble a few bucks on those odds?

As for the previous readers comment about the author saying that a child's ears moved lower relative to the rest of her face, I believe that it is unjust. First, the comment appears(on page 32) in a reprint of a letter from a child's pediatrician. Second, the pediatrician does not say that the program moved the ears; it just says that the ears moved during the time the child was participating in the program. Third, the reviewer does not claim to be medical professional, so I don't think that she (or anyone other than a medical professional who examined the child) is in a position to say anything about what happened to this child's ears or how it happened.

In short, parents/professionals must choose to spend their [$$$] or not on a book that could potentially change their kid's life. I hope that my review will help them arrive at their decision. (And, remember, if [$$$] is too much, there is always the public library.)

As a pediatric community nurse who works with children with severe developmental delays as well as multiple medical issues, I can tell you that this program _ Yoga for the Special Child- has been a gift. The book is a beginning, or introduction of sorts to Sonia Sumars theraputic yoga program. The children whom I work with love all aspect (breathing, asanas and relaxation) of "yoga therapy" and often will initiate our yoga sessions. My clients medical specialists also have commented posatively and often times will atribute the achievement of developmental goals to the patient's regular yoga practice.
The child is only limited in his or her yoga practice by the creativity of the teacher. And if you just listen, the child will show you what they need. Yoga is a wonderful way to empower these special children.

If you don't know anything about yoga or therapy, then this is a great book to get to use with you child who has a disability. If you do have a yoga background then a lot of it is common sense on how to stretch your child. The great thing about this book is that it has specific exercises for each stage, so it is a handy reference tool.

This is a wonderful book. Ms Sumar is an inspiration for all parents and caregivers of special needs children. By following her heart, she has proven we can overcome all obstacles.

Letters from parents and health care givers who have used her method give this book authenticity. The illustrated how-to section make this unique approach easy to use.

Yoga for the Special Child is truly a blessing for all of us looking for a more natural way to help our children.

I bought this in 1992 for the State of Washington EIT test at the price of $43. How the hell is this now $134 and it's the same damn edition, not to mention the print quality doesn't merit such a hefty pricetag? [read: it was recycled paper with crappy fonts]

I lost my copy and many books in a storage flood. Hindsight is 20/20 and my careless nature due to a freak flood at WSU one winter is going to force me to fork out a lot more money than this damn text deserves.

Only problem is that Lindeburg has a virtual monopoly on this type of examination.

This book is great for civil engineering students, even if you are not going to take the FE exam for a while. It is a simple yet thorough reference that will probably replace a lot of your old textbooks once you are finished with your classes. The only problem is that the answers/solutions to the exercise problems seem to be published in some supplementary text to be purchased separately. At least you will be able to sell back some of your old textbooks to help pay for it.

Review Date: 2003-11-14
This book is extremely useful, as the FE exam is based on rapid recall of fundimentals, not in depth knowledge or detailed problem solving. It is very well rounded and is designed to help you brush up on areas where you are weak. As a Chem E. it was necessary to learn the basics of circuit design, statics, etc. and this is the book to do it. The book is laid out in simialr order to the NCEES reference manual, so no surprises on exam day. Remeber, you only have to PASS, you don't need to ace the exam, so the book's few weaknesses won't hinder you from passing.

I recommend this book enthusiastically to my students as a concise, clear, easy-to-use and thorough reference on painting materials, especially oil painting (though it does cover other painting media). There hasn't been a technical question about materials that it hasn't answered for me, and the information provided has also led me to experiment with new materials. It is not a "how-to" book on painting and there are no pictures or anecdotes, but it is oriented towards serious students and professionals. Gottsegen's knowledge and expertise in the field allow for an in-depth understanding of the tools of the fine artist, and his book dispels so many of the myths surrounding art materials that have been perpetuated in other resources.

My painting instructor reccomended this book. If you're serious about art, you might want to get this...It's a handy reference to materials (frames, grounds, paints, solvents), techniques and safety/protection...It's also easy to follow, well researched and comprehensive. The 4 stars is because there is some outdated information...e.g. Gottsegen explains how to make oil paints...But given the health risks (of working w/ dry pigments), difficulty and time required in this process, it really isn't feasible.

The only thing that keeps me from giving this movie the full 5 stars is my disappointment at WB's decision to tone it down before release. The action and plot development are more intense than they regularly dared in the televised shows, and all things considered, it is very good, despite the fact that I know it would have been so much more. One warning, however. I made the mistake of checking out the extras first, and it ruined the surprise at the end. A definite must for animated bat-fans.

Not just another stupid kids' cartoon

Review Date: 2003-04-15
When WB first started running ads for "Batman Beyond," I must admit I was skeptical. "Batman: the Animated Series" and its subsequent series had been among my favorite shows, but having a show that was wholeheartedly separate from the Batman canon was a little questionable, in my mind. BTAS had done a few things to ignore the comic story, like eschewing the tragic story of Jason Todd in favor of skipping right to Tim Drake in the line of Robins, but that can be chalked up more to network censorship and showing people what they would want to see (which is not Robin getting beaten to death by the Joker). I was also a little worried the series would go the way of "Extreme Ghostbusters," taking an excellent cartoon with wonderful characters and throwing it away for a cheap grab at a new market.
Having said all that: Batman Beyond definitely exceeded my expectations, and this movie went beyond that. The movie format allowed some things to happen that could have never happened in the TV show--the ten minute flashback showing the Joker's torture of Robin, and the terrifying grotesque skeleton's grin forced onto Tim's face as a result. But unlike many attempts, live-action and animated, to delve into the psyche of the Batman both as a hero regardless of who wears the cowl and as the men who have worn the suit, this really hits a home run. Bruce Wayne's motivation for ending his use of a Robin and eventually ending his career as Batman is revealed, as well as his hesitancy to let Terry be Batman at all, let alone be Batman without his supervision from afar.
If you could care less about the psychological drama of some guy who dresses up as a bat, the action scenes and smooth flow of the plot provide plenty of entertainment. The "whodunit" aspect is especially played up and detective work, something the Batman has always been known for and that has been sorely lacking from all but the first live-action Batman movie (that's the 1989 one, not the campy 1966 movie or any of the rarely-mentioned 1940s productions), is especially present.
Check it out; it's worth renting or owning, with a great story and character development.

Don't shoot yourself in the foot, see the movie first.

If you haven't yet seen the Batman Beyond movie, Return of the Joker, buy it and watch it now. Go! Shoo!

Yes, WB did edit the movie.

Yes, it would have been better unedited, assuming you are 11-ish or older.

Yes, the movie is still totally 'Schway'. It rocks! Buy it! Now! Great art, nice music, tight like a drum story.

What I did? I bought the movie and this book, which is the _UNEDITED_ screenplay. I watched the movie, then read this book to see the difference. Slight, but noticeable. The models in the back were a nice touch- needed more Dee-Dee pictures. ;-)

How come there aren't Dee-Dee action figures? I want them.

After reading the screenplay for Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker, I CANNOT wait for the video. This was VERY well written and explains what happened to the Joker, Harley Quinn & Tim Drake, (Robin), and why the Joker is still around after all this time in a believable and understandable manner. They even explain why Bruce walks with a limp & cane now, (& it's not because he got old either). I hope WB does not edit ONE SECOND of the screenplay as it will do it an injustice. As with the others, I do not want to give out any spoilers but I will say that there are many twists, suspenseful moments and surprises that'll make you want to read it over and over. This is a must read for anyone who follows BB and wanted to know where the rest of the "Batman family" is after all these years.

There are a few unanswered questions though like why Bruce stopped being Batman, (though that WAS explained in the very first episode), whatever happened to Nightwing & why Bruce has a costume "tribute" of Harley Quinn, especially after what she & the Joker did...sorry, can't give away any spoilers, (though if you're dying to know, just look at the character drawings in the back of the book to get an idea. That's as close as you'll get from me about a spoiler). However, those minor omissions are more than made up for by the clever & well written plot & story about the rest of the characters. I highly recommend this book for every Batman & Batman Beyond fan.

Cyrano de Bergerac, the character, the play, the legacy, is a timeless literary herald due to its theme. Existence in a contrived reality constitutes a standard motif of Romanticism. Literature itself is able to assume the bittersweet but themed predictability that concrete reality lacks. It pretends no circumstance is too outrageous or too wonderful, seamlessly binding the ruthlessly sinister and the impossibly good. A contrived existence in literature can be interpreted as a dream world in which the character chooses to envelop himself, blocking out society's standards and inverting the impossible. This shadow often sadly results in the opposite of the character's original intentions because it is surreal. The main use of this method by Cyrano is in writing sonnets for Christian's dictation to Roxane. In an abstract way, Cyrano vents his own feelings, but credits his the resulting glory to a handsome protégé. A secondary example is the finality in Roxane's tragic statement upon realizing that it was the dying Cyrano she loved, and not Christian. "I never loved but one man in my life, and I have lost him twice". She has finally allowed the vale of deception to be lifted, finding in its place a life misspent. Not unlike a certain Shakespearean character of the same era, she realizes herself to be a woman who has loved not wisely but well. Shaped by a theme of false reality's ultimately unhappy demise, the play is an extraordinary work magnifying life's complications.

I have had this recording for many years. My original copy is on vinyl. Not only is it extremely well acted, but one almost feels like they are in the locations of the play, the theater, the bakery, the battlefront.

Very good

This book came quickly, and was the correct book for the reading list for my daughter who is in the 10th grade. We both love used books and have never been diasppointed in their purchase. This one was no exception!

The play in which Steve Martin's "Roxanne" was based on is "Cyrano de Bergerac", a French play by Edmond Rostand. The title character is a witty men, well about words, but has a physical appendage that all find alarming and engrossing: a large, portrusive nose. He falls in love with Roxanne, but she is in love with another man; while he is beautiful, he's also a veritable dunderhead. Cyrano agrees to help him court Roxanne and many funny happenings occur. This is an amusing play, sure to charm anyone who can take physical imperfections lightly.

This book is not only a list of the ways you can reward people, but it also gives you a bit of theory behind it, it also tells you what are the risks associated with rewarding and the unforseen effects that uneffective rewarding can have on your team.

I think this book is great reading material, besides giving you extra ideas to reward your team (like the rubber chicken), it can be used as a stepping stone to find more creative ways to improve your team's morale.

Efficient on the topic but disgusting

How can managers dream of subordinates that are competent, reliable, hard-working and mature and at the same time more naïve than toddlers?!?? This book is the modern equivalent of Columbus soldiers trading gold for mirrors and tin bracelets with the indigenous.
Imagine you're a manager whose happiest dream is having your subordinates providing valuable and creative (or at least hard-worked) contribution without having to pay more than a ridicule extra, say $20 (or less, as the title goes). Well - I'd call you a scrooge. But if besides beeing a scrooge, you need a book on how to be so, then this book should be called "Avarice for dummies".

On this topic, which is, pretending to reward subordinates with the lamest surrogate bonuses imaginable, the author does a creative job indeed.
This very creativity abunds on the topic of negative rewards as well, in the chapter 13 which is the crème de la crème of the counterproductive ideas, reaching a climax with the "plastic toilet seat framing a description of why the award was given". The proper retort to such offense would most likely be a resignation written on an used toilet paper.

Offering a tool to evade the reality doesn't do any good.
Ultimately, the manager was supposed to collaborate with subordinates, which means listening (not only hearing), communicating (not just dictating), deciding , evaluating and only then, rewarding or punishing. In THIS order. Well, I 'd put my neck on the line for if a manager followed these steps properly, he wouldn't need a book in order to know how to offer proper compensation to employees. Particularly not this one.

Great addition to a Manager's Library

Kevin Aguanno has created a really good resource book listing 101 different rewards that managers can use to enhance morale and productivity in the workplace, each at extremely little direct cost to the organization. Managers often look for ways to recognize good employees for good performance, but have little to nothing in the morale budget to accommodate larger numbers of people over time. This book guides the reader to a one-stop shop of ideas and suggestions for recognizing others. In addition, Mr. Aguanno gives his readers four factors of when to reward and four tips for choosing the right reward for the right time and person.

As a retired Chief of Police who often recognized his employees and staff, I struggled with identifying what to present to whom when the time was right. With Mr. Aguanno's book, my issue would have been considerably simplified. The book is more than just a list of ways to reward, it is a discussion of when and how to reward, with a strong emphasis (rightly so) on positive rewards, but also a discussion of the infrequent negative reward. All managers and those who aspire to lead should have this book. It is really a great addition to the manager's library.

Fun, practical ideas.

I liked this book a lot better than the Bob Nelson book which was not very practical. This one is full of inexpensive reward ideas that are well-suited to my small (under 100 employees) company. I was impressed with the first half of the book that explains how to get the most out of my reward budget by telling me (step by step) how to ensure that the rewards I select will be valued by the recipient, reinforce the correct behaviors, and have spin-off benefits by motivating other employees. I would recommend you buy this in a minute.

Management, team leaders and the like, have no excuse any longer when it comes to rewarding their team members! Kevin Aguanno, has provided an easy reference for even the most busy managers. This book is a wonderful resource for managers that need good ideas quickly. It is so easy to forget to reward one's staff when times get crazy. The ideas in 101 ways will help every team leader save time and money. Most importantly, it will enable management to show its appreciation in so many ways that are truly meaningful to staff.
