I was really impressed with this Kaplan book. I purchased it because I was debating about whether or not I wanted to pursue a Ph.D. This book gives you step by step guides on how to apply (from writing essays to asking for recommendations), how to find money for school (scholarships, school funding, loans: types of, etc.), and wake-up calls on the real-life of a Ph.D. student and after graduation. There is also a section in the back on where to find scholarship money.

I read this book straight through with a highlighter and pencil and it helped me get through the application process smoothly. It's well written and user friendly. I strongly recommend purchasing this book even if you're just thinking about applying to graduate school. It really makes you think about the entire process, not just the "going-to-school" part.

General but Helpful Overview!

I was pleasantly surprised by this book, written by Kaplan. Although some of their LSAT books were not helpful to me, this "strategic approach" to applying to law schools was quite effective in offering solid information.

The strongest sections of this book deal with how to write the personal statement, and how to create a special theme for your application. These sections give practical and insightful advice, allowing readers to hone in on their strengths and weaknesses.

The main drawback of this book is that most chapters are brief and pretty general. If I could suggest to Kaplan how to improve this book, I'd tell them to expand their shorter sections with more indepth material.

Overall, I'd recommend that readers check this book at their local bookstores first. It's possible that you can obtain all the secrets and tips on a brief skim of the book. For others who have not done much reading on applying to law schools, this book should be useful to them.

As a public librarian, the first question I ask about a book that seeks to help people is: "Is the information accurate and the help practical?" The second question is: "Will the book be useful in my library?" Get Into Veterinary School: Insights by an Admissions Expert is positive on both questions. In fact, shortly after it was added to my library, it was checked out, so I had to wait a few weeks to borrow it.

The book is by a true expert - the former Director of Admissions at Cornell's famed veterinary school - and the insights are exceptionally practical, such as classes to take in high school as well as in college. It has wise advice on choosing the college to attend when veterinary school is the ultimate goal. The author also stresses the importance of large-animal experience and references from practicing veterinarians in the admissions process, as it is highly competitive.

At the back of the book are three very practical appendices - lists of veterinary schools and organizations, veterinary technology programs in community and technical colleges, and animal and veterinary organizations. Vet tech programs are a wonderful alternative for those who do not feel a DVM program is the right fit. I found one such program a short drive from my home.

This book contains a very clear and concise explanation of all the key concepts in science, complete with sample questions throughout the chapters. Material is presented logically, and no time is wasted with extraneous details, it get's right to the point. There are 3 sample exams as well, and each has a detailed answer key, which is of key significance in helping one learn from their mistakes.

The bible for graduate admission!!

The main reason I bought this book is because I got three rejection letters during the last season of admissions. So, I bought the book with the hope that it will give me an insight of the admissions process in which it did. You will get all the information you need regarding how to choose the right college. What you should do during your undergraduate studies in order to make a better chance of getting acceptance. How to ask someone to write a great recommendation for you, and of course, how to write a supurb personal statement. You don't really need to have a straight A's to get into Grad. School. However, a long preparation and strong commitment is required. At the end of the admissions this year, I got five thick envelopes sending to me, now I just have to choose which one will I want to go, and one of those happens to be Harvard University.

This is the only book on this subject and is very good.

If you are like most MBA applicants, you'll probably have to prepare a draft recommendation letter for yourself. Not many supervisors/managers can find time to write detailed recos.

You need to see at least one recommendation letter to understand what does it actually mean. I couldn't find a single free sample reco letter on net that I could use and as far as books on this subject are concerned, this is the only one. So, you don't have much of a choice here.

But the good thing is in spite of being the only book about reco letters; this book is actually quite good. 30 sample letters will give you enough material to prepare detailed recos. Moreover, it's available as PDF, so you are spared the headaches of shipping and all that too.

The only reason I didn't give a 5 star to this book is because I couldn't find another book to compare it with. I'm sure the book could be improved further but even in its current version, it's of great value.

Kaplan provides 3 very helpful practice exams and a solid list of literary terms. Their multiple choice advice was generally useful, too.

If you want to buy only 1 AP English Lit. prep book, I'd recommend the Princeton Review. It's more compact and doesn't beat around the bush.

Buy the Premium Book not the Comprehensive
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2006-01-06
This is a great book and I definitely recommend it, but you really should get the premium program instead of the comprehensive program. The premium is the same book but also has a cd included which has four computer practice tests as well as lots of extra practice problems. It is well worth the extra cost for the premium book. I bought the comprehensive and after reading reviews about the premium, I realized I bought the wrong version and went ahead and bought the premium book in addition. I'm really glad I did.
