This worked so well for me, I still remember it years later

This book had a huge impact on how I wrote my college essays, and it was a good read, too. It _has_ been a few years since my college days, but I found this book so helpful that I looked it up immediately when my niece reached the college-planning age.

Pretty Good

I think this book is pretty good with the exception that it only uses examples of essays from people who aleady had really good grades in High School, obviously these are "likely to suceed Students," so why wouldn't their essays get them into an ivy league school. I like the way the book is set up, on how it puts you in the admissions officer's shoes and allows you to decide whether the student is capable of making it in a high end college. You flip back to the book at the end of each essay to see where the person got accepted and what they major in. I believe they should have used more average students that wrote good essays and got into decent schools. Most of us arent 5.0 GPA students and seeing what other people in our position are is more important for our confidence. Many 2.5-3.0 GPA students have gotten into good schools just the same. I also think not so good examples should have been used. All in all this book is worth buying if you are planning to write a college essay soon just as i am.

This book is great if you are looking for sample letters, but if you are looking for hints, suggestions, or guilines you will not find them in this book. The book has page after page of sample letters, both well written letters and poorly written letters.

Great help with a bit of humor as well

I have written college letters of recommendations for many students, which is often a stressful process, and this book is definitely a great resource! When you get stuck on occasion, it reminds you of some of the approaches you can take. It also gives you a good feel for what colleges are looking for. I really liked having true examples to illustrate the points that it's making. The section of poor letters is often fun and entertaining (unfortunately at the expense of the students being written about).

I would highly recommend this book to all high school teachers and counselors, and even students trying to get a feel for who to ask for letters of recommendation and what advice to give those who they ask.

This is a really helpfull book. It gives you a great idea about the test and format/contend of questions. It is for those last months of preparation, when you have read others and are quite ready to give it a try. And you learn best doing questions and answers! Especcially when they have explanations like in this book.

Focused study of key information. Princeton Review teaches you the 'need to know' information in a concise manner. Their test taking tips help you narrow the answer choices to a managable level, critical for cracking the difficult questions. This is a great place to start your preparation for the Gmat.

For learning the techniques, not for practice.
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 11 total.
Review Date: 1998-11-25
This is really a good book. It doesn't waste your time by teaching all maths and english. Instead it teaches you GMAT maths and GMAT english.

All the techniques are quite easy to follow and it is worth going through the book before you practice on original GMAT questions. The only drawback is that it has only two full length tests and not much material to practise.

I've used Kaplan to teach a Catholic High School Entrance Exam prep class in Rhode Island for four of the past six years I've taught the course.
Students give the text consistently high scores as a great resource.
It's practical, concise and has lots of opportunities to practice. Highly recommend. See my website at www-chspe-prepclass.com

Review: Kaplan Catholic HS Entrance Exams 2007 Edition

My daughter found this book to be the most helpful of the two books she used to study for the Catholic high school entrance exams. The Kaplan book provided good explanations of each of the different exams administered, i.e., COOP, HSPT and TACHS, and it provided good sample exams of each, with answers and explanations. The HSPT exam was the most common exam administered for the high schools she was applying to, and she felt the practice exams gave her a really good feel for the real test.

worth owning but be forewarned
Helpful Votes: 13 out of 13 total.
Review Date: 2006-01-09
there is not much out there for ISEE prep so to get adequate sample tests you need to buy this one too.
the tips and techniques are good and there are a fair amount of practice questions and tests but 2 things to watch out for:
- on the mid-level exam, some of the reading comprehension passages are MUCH longer in the actual exam
- the practice tests for mid-level are a combination of mid- and upper-level exams so it is very difficult to gauge how well a tester is doing esp. for a six-grader (going in to seventh)

Kaplan SSAT the 2006 Edition
Helpful Votes: 17 out of 26 total.
Review Date: 2005-08-20
There are two major divisions of the SSAT exam. These are the
English language and Mathematics compilation and induction.
A strength of the work is that it teaches how to approach
problem sets methodically while utilizing limited time wisely.
There are 45 questions on the English section and 75 minutes for
completion or 1.67 minutes/question. The Mathematics section has
50 questions to be completed in 75 minutes or 1.5 minutes per
question. There is plenty of time; however, there is no time
to waste. Candidates should not dwell on any single question.

The English section tests the following:

- Synonyms i.e. peddle is to sell or synopsis is to summary
- Logical analysis of words
- Writing essays in standard English

[ Standard English means adherence to punctuation, spelling,
sentence structure, structural coherence and the absence of
slang or street language. ]

- Reading paragraphs and answering questions by summarizing the
material, researching in the paragraph, inference and answer
prediction based upon a general knowledge of the exam format

- Simple algebra covering the first semester of a high school
course in Regents Algebra or its equivalent

The test is straight forward; however, candidates must exercise
care in reading/interpreting the questions. Accuracy is
paramount because the score is determined from the number of
correct responses. The optimal strategy on reading comprehension is to read the questions first. Then delve into the paragraph
and underline key words and phrases. Lastly, attempt to answer
the questions. Invariably, every group of questions tests the
ability of the candidate to identify the purpose or general
theme of the paragraph. This may be in the first few sentences
or it may be gleaned from reading the totality of the presentation. In any event, practice will be helpful in this area and the Kaplan text provides plenty of exposure to the test
format.

The Kaplan work is topical and easy to understand or interpret.
The price is reasonable and affordable.

Extreme LSAT studying
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2005-11-28
This book is one of the LSAT materials no longer for sale new. It contains old LSATs (old, as in before December 1995). The value of these tests is limited; if you were to study only three previous LSATs it would be best to take three of the newest LSATs. If you're doing all the old LSATs available then this book is one of the materials you'll need.

It contains PrepTests 2, 4, & 5 which correspond to October 1991, February 1992, and June 1992, respectively. As near as I can tell, you cannot obtain these tests from any other LSAT book (but testing companies may have them available for their students).

If you use these tests, use them early on in your practice. Work towards the newer exams as the date approaches the LSAT. If you're taking all 50+ LSATs available, you'll want at least one day off per week. So figure a maximum of 6 tests per week along with time adequate to review all your wrong answers and questionable responses. Count backward from the test and you'll have your study plan.

This book does a great job of reviewing all the necessary grammatical usage and verbal reasoning strategies needed to prepare for this section of the GMAT. The training set which comes after the study guide section is especially valuable with its abundance of useful practice questions, including a large section on sentence correction. Highly recommended for thorough review and helpful test-taking skills.

If you're just going to take a few official prep tests, then grab the latest ones availble such as this one. It'll be closer to the real deal than some of the older tests, but not that much different. However, you're best buy is one of the books that contains 10 prep tests instead of only 1. 1 test = 8 bucks, 10 tests = ~20 bucks...you do the math. If you have the time to take multiple tests, then grab one of these:

"10 Actual, Official LSAT Preptests"
"Next 10 Actual, Official LSAT Preptests"
"10 More Actual, Official LSAT Preptests"
