This book has the statistics and brief explanations on about the 180 law programs. It is a very good reference for the hard facts on the programs that one is interested in. It has a very useful admissions matrix (the probability of being admitted given one's GPA and LSAT score) in almost each school's profile.

Great survey of how India has developed
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-09-20
This book provides a thorough account of the colonial affects that India went through to shape is modern economy. The first two chapters are broken up into agricultural development of the period and the industrial development of the period. It clearly shows that there was subsistence agriculture but industrial scale was struggled to be achieved. This book is very fine economic analysis and while having the common methods of econometrics it does not become bogged down in them so it can be understood by those without a mathematical background. If you do have one though you will find some extra goodies within the book. The last chapter looks at how the countries economy developed between the 1920's to the 1970's and focuses on the struggles India faced once it was free of colonial domination. Overall this is a very thorough account and one worth taking a look at if you are interested in colonial India.

Daniel Guhr has done an outstanding job of making a difficult subject interesting in this eminently readable new book. Access to higher education is a critical issue, and the conclusions drawn by Dr. Guhr are important for anyone interested in social policy -- indeed, in the future of this and other countries -- to understand. This book is a must-read for a wide range of people. Do yourself a favor: pick it up, read it, and start thinking about who has access to higher education, why, and what that means for our future.

Vintage Jill Johnston!

One cannot thank Serpent's Tail enough for making this most significant, vital and hugely entertaining collection of writings by Jill Johnston available. Hers was a voice of assurance, rage, inspiration and intelligence that gave an entire generation the incentive to declare and be proud of our lesbian identity. More than any other writer from this era, Johnston was a trail-blazer, a lone voice in the early Stonewall period, before Lesbian chic and Queer theory. Revisiting these weekly columns, published in the Village Voice during the early to mid-seventies, one is dazed by her clarity and wisdom, her empowering and insightful observations, the sheer speed and force of her writing, and the breadth of her experience and knowledge. It is reassuring to find that the impact and tremendous shifts experienced by us who partook in the second wave of the (real) women's movement are as stupendous as we recall. I recommend that all the "straight" feminists writing about us in their queer theories immerse themselves in The Comingest Womanifesto, sample Dyke Nationalism & Heterosexutility, or The March of the Real Women. Vintage Jill Johnston!

In Johnston's current incarnation as critic and (auto)biographer, we must be grateful that the forces that rule have not been able to shut down this enormously talented, creatively inventive and brilliant author. Her integrity and passions are alive, and her writing has retained its seething vigor despite being properly punctuated and paragraphed.

Admission Accomplished should be required reading on any Women's Studies and/or Queer Studies syllabus. On a clear day, you might be lucky enough to read Jill Johnston.

Admission of Guilt , A Collection of Prison Stories by Cathy Jourdan

I love to read as much as I love to write. Sometimes life just gets in the way of having that time to slip off to another world and just enjoy. I have found a great new book that lets you do just that. Admission of Guilt by Cathy Jourdan is a collection of prison stories that this talented author has composed for our enjoyment. Short stories with twists you don't see coming and interesting glimpses into the minds of criminals will leave you in anticipation for the next story. Not yet released to the public it is still available for pre-orders. Get this book, make yourself a bubblebath, get a toddy (optional) and enjoy!

I heard Danny on the radio talking about this product and I have got to say, it is unlike anything else available. I covers every aspect of helping students get into college and shows them exactly what to do, step by step. You can't tell without a picture, but there are a bunch of workbooks and audio CDs so students can listen and work along each part of the process. There's even a big organization poster included. I am recommending to parents I know to order a copy.

A must-read for Community College leaders
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2007-02-14
While commnity colleges have helped everyone go to college, many of our students flounder once they get in, and never graduate. This book looks at community college graduation rates for OCCUPATIONAL PROGRAMS (as opposed to transfer programs).

The focus of the book is a 3-year study in which the authors tracked some of best accredited private occupational colleges, and compare them to the community colleges in the same areas. The private schools had MUCH better graduation rates, especially for minority students. The difference was not explained by the students coming in, as the demographics and academic levels of incoming students were the same for the two groups of schools. The authors have identified several key differences in the ways that the two types of schools support their enrolled students. These translate into ideas for changes that community colleges should consider.

As a community college faculty member in an occupational field, I found a lot of food for thought. I've discussed some of the study results with my students, and they agree.
